i already setup a skolelinux 5 main server & a skolelinux workstationboth can ping eachother and resolve each other's name since i already added the workstation in the main server using lwat but i cannot log in from the workstation with the user that i had added on the main server. What should i do to make this work?

Although its working fine (I can copy/delete/execute files from/to linux server), at mac workstation, at chooser, when I click on appletalk icon nothing happens. I have to click on Server IP address button and type my server IP, which is 192.168.0.123. Its is annoying and time consuming. I have to do this every time I want to access my server. At previously version, after I click on appletalk icon (at chooser), the server name comes up right away.

I have a 64 bit Dell laptop happily running 10.04 32-bit and Windows 7 booting with GRUB. I want to also install Lucid server on a spare 20GB empty partition and I would like to have Lucid server available in the GRUB menu along with Lucid 10.04 and Windows 7.
I don't want to blow away what I already have working and last time I booted from the server CD to try to install it (9.10), it didn't look as easy as when I installed workstation. Will an install of Lucid server gracefully and safely allow itself to be put on a spare partition and install itself in GRUB or so I need to do this manually? If I lose my Lucid workstation install, I am in trouble.

We decided to setup a proxy server which just logs all the requests but does not do anything else like caching/access control etc.All users will be using a fixed set of computers and hence we can redirect their requests to the proxy. I came across Squid, but found it to be too heavy for our requirements. Is there any other proxy-server software that is good enough for what we want or is Squid the only way?

There are multiple (5 or so) database admins that have to log into a windows 2003 server and from there log into a red hat server. Once they are in the rhel box they execute an app (let's say xclock) that gives them an xwindows session on their desktop. Currently only one person can do this at a time, but they have asked me to configure it to allow multiple users to log into the red hat box from the windows server and run an xwindow.

fdisk does not like md devices on my machine... always says it has an invalid partition table. While this is said to be normal all over the net, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about that fact. What is best practice these days, to create a non-partitionable md device or a partitionable mdp device?
If I create a partitionable md device, I would imagine it would look good in fdisk. However, I am concerned about growing the array afterward. I would then have to grow the array, redefine the partition, and then grow the file system. The PITA factor goes up. Has anyone worked with both? Pro/Cons? My array was created with:
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --force --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
FYI: I have backups. I understand RAID 1 may be a better choice of raid level.
i am learning about the ability to utilize the rsyslog ability to be a server for the logging info from other machines. i have did it successfully, and i get logs from other machines through the network, but i don't know where i can set the server for my desire act on these logs that come from the network. i essence the question is: why the server put some logs at /var/log/messages, and others not ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 servers running CentOS 5.4 Final, one is 32 bit and the other is x86_64.When I ssh to either server, the session will freeze after a while and I cannot type anything except I close the term. This has happened before, and I thougthat was caused by iptables' rulesBut now I turned off iptables and the problem remains.I tried tcpdump on my machine(client running OpenSUSE 11.2), and it shows that after the freezing, client will still sent ack message to the server.So I think this may be caused by the server.Note that I can ping the server smoothly.Does anybody meet this problem before

It waits for a very long time and then returns with error connection timed out port 22.

Then I connect via ssh from my home but still the same error.
Then in the config file /etc/ssh/sshd_config, I uncomment the line : ListenAddress 0.0.0.0

i have fedora 7 server running just zimbra email server. but i forgot the password.
i used a livecd ubuntu then i went to /etc/shadow i used gedit and i remove the hash between the ": :" then saved file. i reboot but i still can not logging. and it does a weird thing. i wrote root then the i hit enter when ask for the password i hit enter. then the screen clean up by it self then it ask for logging again. It does nt say that the password is wrong or any other error.
also i went to single-user mode then once i m at # i wrote passwd root then new password then i reboot but i still have the same problem. i cant logging.
how to disable postfix logging? I can obviously set a macro to purget the logs but I am trying to reduce the IO of the logging altogether.

Whether I use ufw or firestarter to populate my iptables, my firewall logs get written to 3 different log files:/var/log/messages/var/log/kern.log/var/log/syslogI want to keep the logging turned on, but I'd rather it not log to syslog, as it's obscuring other events in syslog that I'd like to see. I'm using rsyslog on Ubuntu. I looked around online and found one person suggesting I add this to the top of rsyslog.conf:kern.* -/var/log/kern.logkern.* ~I did that and restarted rsyslog, but it's still logging to the same 3 files.

It sees the server on the network, but does not seem to be passing the windows login through to the Linux server (which is how all of the XP machines log in). When I try to log in using a valid username and password it goes nowhere and just says it is an invalid username and/or password. I had a Vista machine that could log into this Linux server so I do not think the Samba version is the problem.

This solved the problem, though I'm at a loss as to why I've got this behavior on just this one box and none of the others. OS is Debian Lenny, same version of Apache installed via Debian package.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to know is there any way to monitor (I mean log)all of the activity of the users that logging in a server (as root) for example:
1.when do they logging in
2.what commands do they use at what time ( I know that history command do somehow the same but it does not save all of the activity of users exactly with the time of that activity)
3.which one of them installed which package on the server
4.what did they copy or move at what time and summery all the activity that each of them do on the server individually.
I've checked and double checked that there is no user and password directive in /etc/my.cnf and ~/.my.cnf but it seems that every time I issue mysql it will drop me into the command line without prompting for a password or giving any pause. Of course, the only table I have access to when doing this is information_schema with read only on most of it and no access on the rest, but I was just wondering where else an auto-login style authentication could be coming from.

It was working fine, until I had to rebuild my desktop machine. I had the key copied to the server, and passwordless logins where fine.
However now I have rebuilt my desktop, I cant get to the login.
So heres whats happend.
Rebuilt id_rsa.pub, server will not allow login. Remove id_rsa.pub and the server allows password based login.
On the server, removed authorized_keys and known_hosts. makes no difference. Server still disallows keyfile, but will allow password when id_rsa is not present on the client.

So, is there anyway of getting the server to forget the previous keys, it is remembering, As previousily said, I have completly removed the contents of ~/.ssh/ on both the clients and the server.
I'm in charge of a church computer lab which is open to children ages 6 to 16 for about 3 hours a week. We try to have adult supervision but don't have 100% coverage.
The lab has a maximum of 8 computers, a mixture of MACs, Windows XP, and Linux machines, depending on their state of repair.
The church's current internet connection is Verizon residential speed DSL to a 4 port wired plus wireless router in a locked office which also houses our Windows XP office computer and is adjacent to our locked pastor's office.
Internet access for the lab is by a single CAT5 cable passing through a small hole in a wall to a network switch on the other side. All of the lab computers are connected to the switch by CAT5 cable.
I would like to add a server in the locked office to log internet usage and block access to certain websites as needed. I think logging internet activity will be a good antidote in case one of the older ones wants to try to get sneaky and cover their tracks.
I envision building a computer from donated parts, including 2 NICs.
I have never done things from the server end, but think the server edition of Ubuntu would be a good starting point.
My goal is to be able to manage internet access with an easy to use GUI system so I could teach the basics to a couple of youth leaders to use it when I'm not there.
