Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Disk Creation Without .iso
Jul 9, 2010
I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I would like to install 10.04 on another computer without having to download the upgrade again. This computer is also running 9.10. Is there a way that I can create an installation disk of the upgrade I just applied to my system and carry it over to the other computer to upgrade too?

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

I'm trying to install a virtual 10.04 image on a 10.04 server host, and the method I used that worked with 9.10 now fails. For example, I try to install with the following virt-install command (as root):
virt-install --name=star3--escience --connect=qemu:///system --ram=3000 --vcpus=1 --disk path=/disk2/images/star3--escience_60GB_Ubunut10-04.qcow2,size=60 --noautoconsole --os-type=linux --os-variant=ubuntulucid --accelerate --cdrom=/home/mc321/ISOs/ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso --network=bridge:br0 --vnc
[Code]....
In fact, that XtreemOS iso (a Mandriva derivative) is what I installed successfully as a quest OS on the same machine when it was running 9.10.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu alongside windows 7 on my machine, and currently I am having difficulty doing so.Upon initial boot of the LiveCD,it says the installer has encountered an unrecognized error and just goes straight to desktop environment. From there, I can restart the installer just fine but here is where the trouble starts.
Currently, I have a 2TB RAID 0 array utilizing 4 500GB Seagate barracuda SATA II drives. The controller is an nForce 780a NVRaid. I currently have two NTFS partitions for windows. One 150GB primary partition for C:, and another 781GB D: for the storage of games, music and movies. When I try to manually setup the partitions in the Ubuntu installer, I do it like this.
- 200MB ext2 primary partition for /boot
- 150GB xfs logical partition for /
- approx 750GB xfs logical partition for /home (You've probably figured out I'm following the same C: and D: scheme as in windows)
- 8192 MB partition for swap
I then proceed with the install. I see the progress bar complete for the boot partition, but then at about 7% for / it stops and gives a message saying partition creation has failed. I even tried using different filesystems like ReiserFS and Ext4. Same thing every time. I am running a 64bit quadcore system BTW if that is of any importance.

I'm trying to create a folder using the archive manager to install Resin (web server) in the usr/local folder but I get the error message 'error creating directory: Permission denied.'
Is this the easiest way to install an app--by using the Archive Manager--and if so how do I establish the correct permissions.

net book had some issues with windows, so i had to format its hard drive. i put in the ubuntu live image (usb) (yes i md5summed it, its fine) and i tried installing it using the guided partition (using the whole disk) and i tried setting it up manually, but regardless of what i try, when it attempts to format it to the necessary filesystem, it fails at 5% without fail. even IF i use GParted.

When I do a "clean" install of Ubuntu 9.10, Step 5 of 7 is when you choose how to partition your hard drive. My Acer Aspire Desktop has 8GB of RAM and a single 160GB SATA hard drive. If I choose to let Ubuntu do the partitioning, only three partitions are created and one of them IS a Swap partition. However, if I choose the second option to manually create my own partition tables, there is NO Swap option listed in the drop-down list of partitions to create!! Why in the world not, considering the importance of this partition and the fact that the first option DOES automatically create it? A second related (I think) is about the Live System Rescue CD and GParted 4.9. When do you use either of these utilities? After all, GParted is included System Rescue CD.
So, if I want and choose to do a manual/advanced partitioning of my hdd, the only time I can see using either utility is after the complete installation of the Ubuntu distro. Yet, choosing to manually partition my hard drive always results in an error or warning message that I haven't created a Swap partition before proceeding to Step 6 of the installation. Well, of course not since the choice isn't even possible. Good grief, what am I supposed to do when I arrive at the step where I am supposed to choose and then create the partitions for my hdd? Choose the first option, which I don't think is wise/good at all, especially with security in mind. Or choose the second option of using a program like GParted at all? It is hard enough for me to choose a partitioning scheme at all, since opinions on how many partitions are needed and what sizes they should be.

I have a Dell Mini 9 netbook. The SSD took a dump, so I ordered a Super Talent 16gb replacement. I put it in yesterday, tried to install 10.10 and constantly get errors. The first error, which I haven't had since, was [ERROR 30] Read-only File System. The install obviously failed. Wondering if perhaps the file got messed up in translation, I redownloaded 10.10, reformatted the flash drive (sandisk cruizer 4gb), put 10.10 back on via the program on the Ubuntu site. No luck, but no longer the [error 30]. Tried again using Unetbootin, no luck. Rinse repeat a few times, no errors just a working cursor spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and.. you get it.
Tried to put WinXP on it just because I was that frustrated, no luck.
Now I'm back to Ubuntu (because let's face it, who wants to deal with Windows, christ they make it so complicated). I'm currently using 10.04 because I was hoping (praying) it might just be a 10.10 thing.
No such luck, now it goes to step 7/7, starts, and 5% of the way thry "creating ext4 file system" it says "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." I have checked the SSD in the Disk Utility, SMART tests are clean. I have gone to terminal and run fdisk and had a smarter person than me look at the copypasta, no errors, I have deleted all existing partitions in gparted and started fresh. I have tried the auto partitioning, I have tried manual, I am going insane. Literally insane. My preschooler thinks I've leaped off the deep end.
Could it be my flash drive? Could the SSD be defective despite the tests coming back clean? What do I need to type into terminal? Is there a way to entirely entirely entirely wipe the SSD to make it fresh-out-the-box clean? I will happily provide whatever you need if it means I can get my husband off my back about this stupid netbook with its stupid tiny keyboard.

I have a windows 7 ultimate host machine, installed oracle virtual box on it. Made a iso image to boot fr fedora. All this is fine when the installation is complete, it asks for reboot. Reboot done. Then I went to terminal. Did a SU - root to get into the root. Then I did a firstboot command to enter information. I created a user for myself and at the end rebooted the virtual box.
When it starts up, it does not show my user. It just shows "Automatic Login" and it logs in as Live System User. Even if I try to switch user then it gave me a authentication failure when I enter the credentials of the user which I created. If I try to create users manually using system administration, the user is lost after reboot. I have tried all possible steps...as instructed on the net.

I am developing for a Linux based device for which the HOT PLUG option is deactivated. As part of optimizing the code, we also don't want to create device files for unused devices. We understand that both USB attached and fixec SCSI hard disks would create device files like /dev/sda,/dev/sda1 /dev/sdb, /dev/sdb1 etc. Is this understanding correct?
In the case of USB attached SCSI devices, would driver create this device file entry? How is it created? Can somebody please tell me how it is being created automatically. In case I attach a fixed SCSI hard disk before boot up(and create device file /dev/sda1), would USB SCSI device driver create device files starting from /dev/sdb, automatically.

I can't seem to get past step 6 of he installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I get the error: The ext4 file system creation failed... on single partition (no raid). I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. There's no other OS so I don't see any way of getting a command line to try a sudo fdisk..

Then I started the domu with:
xl create /etc/xen/domu.cfg -c
And I receive this message telling me dhcp is used as I specified static ip:
IP-Config: eth0 hardware address 00:16:3e:01:01:01 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
What can I do to desactivate the dhcp client?
remark: I used this equivalent former configuration with qemu-kvm and I booted with static ip without any problem.

I have never had to do this before But I'm giving my laptop to my mother when my new one arrives and I need to remove the ubuntu installation and get the disk space back.
A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.
Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.

There was an option during installation of 10.10 to encrypt the hard disk (or was it only the home folder?). I thought, hmm, I should probably do this, but I'll decide later, thus, installed 10.10 without encrypting the hard disk. Now, I want to encrypt the hard disk but don't see anywhere in the System Preference or Administration where I can do that. Am I missing it? Or how do I do this now?

I'm a complete noob trying to install Ubuntu Server 10.10 on my first build for use as a file/media server. When I get to the step to partition the drives, the installation freezes. The screen says "Starting disk partitioner" and the progress bar stops at 45%. It has done this three times now, and the longest I waited for it before rebooting was over an hour.I am installing from a flash drive containing the .iso file, and I have the following hardware (in case that matters): asus p7h55-m pro mobo, core i3-540 CPU, 2x4GB ram, WD caviar green 1.5TB, WD caviar green 1TB, and Kingston 8GB SSD.

I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.
I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).
These are the commands I used:
Quote:
p -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /b*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /d*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /e*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /h*
[Code]....
I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...
So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.
It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.
What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.

I have a netbook I'm not using and which I transformed into a server with Apache, Tomcat6, Netatalk, Webmin, BIND9 and Tor.
Problem is, the disks never stop spinning because all of the programs write a few kb at least every few seconds to disk, even when nobody is connected to it.
My question is: Is there a way to have the computer boot from disk like normal (maybe even a squashfs), keep ALL CHANGES to ram and then save to disk when either the ram is full (unlikely because the server is rebooted every few days) or at shutdown?
I thought about a mixture of ramfs and unionfs but I'm not good enough yet...

How do i find out if my machine is x32 x64 x86?
Anyway im trying to install kernel headers and devel from the fedora installation disk but i dont know how to get to the cdrom thru terminal as i cant copy the RPMs to desktop by drag n drop or using software installer.
I dont have an internet connection to the pc so i cant use yum (which would make things so much easier) so can anyone tell me how how to install these packages thru terminal?

I have a NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ with four 1TB drives in a RAID-5 array. This is our primary file storage. This has previously been backed up to a hardware RAID-0 array directly attached to our Windows server. The capacity of this backup array is no longer sufficient. So the plan was, take a bunch of 200GB to 320GB drives (And a 750) I had kicking around, chuck them in a couple of old SCSI drive enclosures I have collecting dust, attach them via IDA/SATA-to-USB adaptors to a USB hub, attach that to the server, create a JBOD array spanning the disks, and back up the NAS to that. Performance is not an issue as this is just to be used for backup, with the idea being as near to zero cost as possible (Spend so far = NZ$100ish).
The first hurdle I struck was Windows not supporting Dynamic Disks on USB drives (Required to create a spanned volume). At first I resisted using another machine (i.e. a machine running Ubuntu) as I didn't want to dedicate a piece of hardware to backing up the NAS. I then decided it would be acceptable to do this via a VM, which is what I've done.So I have 10.04 running under VMWare Server 2.0.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2. The disks are all presented to the VM. I wasn't sure if I was going to end up creating the array under LVM or something else, but I noticed Disk Utility has an option to create an array, so I tried that. When I add two 250GB drives, the array size is 500GB. When I then add a 160GB drive, the array size drops to 480GB. Huh? If I keep adding disks (Regardless of order) the final array size comes out at 1.8 TB, as per the attached screenshot. Now with the following drives, I expected something more like:
160 + 250 + 250+ 750 + 250 +200 + 200 + 250 + 320 + 250 + 320 = 3.2TB
Am I missing something or making a false assumption somewhere?
