Hardware :: SCSI Hard Disk Device Node Creation

I am developing for a Linux based device for which the HOT PLUG option is deactivated. As part of optimizing the code, we also don't want to create device files for unused devices. We understand that both USB attached and fixec SCSI hard disks would create device files like /dev/sda,/dev/sda1 /dev/sdb, /dev/sdb1 etc. Is this understanding correct?
In the case of USB attached SCSI devices, would driver create this device file entry? How is it created? Can somebody please tell me how it is being created automatically. In case I attach a fixed SCSI hard disk before boot up(and create device file /dev/sda1), would USB SCSI device driver create device files starting from /dev/sdb, automatically.

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.
So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.
But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where
1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda,sdb,sdc and sdd.
2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde,sdf,sdg & sdh.

But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.
You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.
So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.
It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.
Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?
How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?

I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:

But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?

Since May 12,2009. Our system lifekeeper has the error log "lifekeeper error: DEVICE FAILURE on SCSI device '/dev/add'", but it ran normally. Until last week, it failover to the standby server. The disk still running, the error still come out.

2 days ago i have tried to install fedora 11 ...but after i did achieved installation successfully ...and rebooted system ,the device hasn't booted from hard disk ,alternatively it has booted from the network (Broadcom)- the third booting choice in bios - . i have tried three different DVDs ....but no thing changes ...!

I have installed 1tb hard drive and would like to partition as follows:
1) / - 20g
2) /swap - 6G
3) /photos /150g
4) /videos /500g
5) /audio /300g
After 2-3 partition an extended partition automatically created in which I am not able to create specified capacity i.e., say I want 150g of /photos partition, the /videos partition is automatically reduced and a free space at the end appears. Some free space is always there which i am not able to understand. Nevertheless i clicked to create, but I get an error viz. 'device not created'.

I have installed vmware in windows server 2003 enterprise edition. When I installed I changed the default installation folder from c: drive to i: drive, as I do not have space in c: drive. After I captured red hat linux cd in vmware and reached partitioning section and continued I got a message like "an error has occured no valid devices were find on which to create new file systems, please check the hardware for the cause of the problem". The machine is IBM server....

I'm kind of new to programming in Linux & c/c++. I'm currently writing a FileManager using Ubuntu Linux(10.10) for Learning Purposes. I've got started on this project by creating a loopback device to be used as my virtual hard disk. After creating the loop back hard disk and mounting it has the following configuration.

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. Last night I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive. When mounting from file browser:

On my debian lenny OS I have an external usb hard disk I would like to automount it at boot. So I edited the /etc/fstab file in order to automount /dev/sdb1. It worked without problem. Then I recompiled the kernel and, as consequence, /dev/sdb1 changed to /dev/sdc1. I started playing with udev in order to match the now called /dev/sdc1 and to change its name in /dev/maxtor (being maxtor the brand of the hard disk). Obviously I edited also /etc/fstab: /dev/sdb1 is now /dev/maxtor.
The boot automount doesn't work anymore. On the boot sequence I can read the message "Mounting local filesystem...mount: special device /dev/maxtor does not exist FAILED". But when I log into the system I can run the command "mount /dev/maxtor /mnt/maxtor" and it works! So, IMHO, my udev rule is correct otherwise also the manual mount wouldn't work, right? I have to tell to udev to create /dev/maxtor BEFORE the boot automount process.
I tried to delete my udev rule and to edit /etc/fstab changing /dev/maxtor in /dev/sdc1 (the name udev gave to my hard disk after kernel recompile, before was /dev/sdb1) and it didn't work: on boot process I always see the "Mounting local filesystem...mount: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist Failed". Then I tried to change /dev/sdc1 in /dev/sdb1 in /etc/fstab and to reboot with the old original kernel and int this way it works. With my compiled kernel, the OS seems to have lost the capacity to detect my device node correctly.

One of my servers contains two scsi enclosures. After hot removing a disk and hot adding another the new disk gets assigned a device file but the enclosure (in sysfs) doesn't want to see it.
How can I force the enclosure to recognise the hot added disk.
Situation in sysfs:
The link device is dead after hot removing the device and keeps vanished after hot adding the new device. The hot added device gets assigned a device file and it is reachable. Even

I am attaching a LTO-3 tape drivce into my RHEL5 linux machine. Every time i used to restart my machine to detect the tape drive is there any way to rescan the buses to detect the newly attached scsi devices. In solaris "devfsadm" and "iostat" is there. I need the same kind of thing in linux.

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work

I have a printer that is not getting a device node assigned at boot.The printer is attached with a USB to Parallel (IEEE-1284) adapter cable.When I plug in the usb cable when the machine is running, the printer is assigned the device node: /dev/usb/lp0
I am guessing that during startup, the printer device is not detected since it is plugged in over an adapter cable which may be considered a device in itself?This is for a retail store, and we rely on the printer to pop the cash drawer open, so it kinda has to work without a "secret handshake".Unfortunately our workstations do not have Parallel ports. I would be happy to share terminal output, udev info, I'll write you a poem but I could sure use a helping hand- I'm stumped!

I created a new disk on our scsi san. I then ran the following command: echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/scan. did that command for each host. and in dmesg, it shows it found a device /dev/sdg. but when i do a fdisk -l. It never lists /dev/sdg. I just did this other day on another server and it worked fine like that. This is RH 4.8.

I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

This device doesn't automount, doesn't show in KDE 4's device notifier, and I can't mount this camera manually because it doesn't appear to get assigned to a device node. Any known solutions? It worked in Slackware 12.2, but not in 13.0 or 13.1.

I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. I see to be having a problem with the SCSI disk that I'm trying to install. The computer that it is attached to was Win XP and SCSI worked fine. When we changed the computer over to Fedora 10, SCSI was being read by the computer but is not accessible.

I have a machine that has an integrated USB flash drive somewhere in it that I can not seem to mount. The OS knows it is there, as I can see it in the dmesg output, but the actual "node" in /dev doesn't actually exist. I'm baffled. Will you help me figure this out? Here's what I came up with so far. The disk is attached to the USB bus, used as a SCSI block device. In dmesg, it is referred to at one point as sdf, as well as under /sys/class/scsi_device. When I go check /dev, /dev/sdf does not exist!:

I've set up DRBD on 2 machines, 1 of them is the master, another is the slave.

I have created a simple menu driven script for our Operations to take care of the basic monitoring and managing of our production application from the back-end. Now, the script when tested in UAT environment was fine, but when deployed to production it kind of behaved oddly.hen the Operator chooses an option from the menu he is given the output and at the end is prompted to return to the main menu by using ctrl+c. In production, this return does not occur for some strange reason and the program just sits there.The session becomes unresponsive after that and I'm forced to terminated it by closing the PuTTY.I tried enabling the debug mode too (set -x) and still was not able to find any useful hints/trails as to why.

The system is fc12 with a scsi pci card. There are 4 disks on the scsi chain, properly terminated. At boot time the system does not recognize the 4th drive. It creates a /dev/sdh entry, but the individual partition entries are not created. fdisk /w creates the /dev/sdh* partition entries. After that the drive is recognized by the system.
Is there record of the device scan activity? What could cause the boot process to identify the drive but stop short of identifying the partitions.
