How do i find out if my machine is x32 x64 x86?
Anyway im trying to install kernel headers and devel from the fedora installation disk but i dont know how to get to the cdrom thru terminal as i cant copy the RPMs to desktop by drag n drop or using software installer.
I dont have an internet connection to the pc so i cant use yum (which would make things so much easier) so can anyone tell me how how to install these packages thru terminal?
I have a MythBuntu system running 9.10 and as many others I am having issues with my wireless card controlled by ndiswrapper (networks are detected but it is unable to obtain an IP address most of the time, once in a while it connects, it also has the "invalid cmd 12" issue which fix is described here).
So I found this thread here (see post #30 on the bottom) and I'd like try upgrading the kernel to a version which Synaptics apparently doesn't offer. So my question is basically threefold. Where do I find/download the kernel (is there a way to use apt get ...) What method do I use to install it (I've found several directions on how to compile it, if someone could point to the most complete ones, I would appreciate it. If for some reason something goes wrong and I need to downgrade again, how do I do that (Synaptics?).BTW, I can hook it up to the network through ethernet and ssh into it from my Mac Mini to work on it.
I want to install package kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp, but when i use terminal to install , write sudo apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp but couldn't find this package. In my synaptic i can't find this package to install. I downloaded from [URL] this package kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp_2.4.27-12_i386.deb ,when i install , to appear error: "dependency is not satisfiable: initrd-tools", i downloaded this package initrd-tools and install but appear this error:"dependency libdevmapper1.02", in my synaptic i saw this package libdevmapper1.02 already installed.how to install package kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp from terminal or from synaptic.?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I load the live CD into my computer, the DVD drive spins very fast and then drops down to command lines with a kernel Panic. I have tried with the Final Release and with the Release Candidate. Because of this I cant even load up to the live CD enviroment.
It also mentions the name of my mother board in the code, the motherboard is a gigabyte G41M-ES2L and is brand new.
Could someone give some advice or help? Currently I dont have ubuntu installed on this computer as I went for a fresh install with vista.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to compile a new vanilla kernel on to my Ubuntu server system which has been freshly installed with Ubuntu 10.04 server 32bits. As this will run on a VIA epia-px5000eg mainboard with USB stick I want compile this kernel on a different machine on which is also ubuntu 10.04 installed. Unfortunately currently I experience difficulties when I boot kernel 2.6.34; it says "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block" while if I load to original kernel that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 all works perfectly well. BTW reason I want to build a custom vanilla kernel is to trim down kernel to the necessary services I need as I am running a server that requires just the essentials. And it needs to support the VIA Epia CPU processor family ( C3, C7 or generic setting which is another hurdle which I won't discuss here ).
Hopefully one out there is able to guide me further as I type step by step what I executed. Thanks for your replies in advance:
Yet I hook up the VIA epia-px5000g with 2gb usb stick, a dvd drive and keyboard ( all usb ). Boot from CDrom and install a minimal system (<f4>) to usb stick. Partitioning part I set it to EXT4 and used full size thus no SWAP. Also mount option " noatime " has been set all to save writes to usb stick.
When the base system has been installed a user has been added, as well apt is being configured to install only security updates automatically. As services I want to run definitely openSSH-server so I can access remotely. Grub gets configured and system will be rebooted.
At this stage I configure the network interface to a static address so I do not need to check my router all the time which dhcp address Ubuntu is using if I want to access remotely.
Now the compile part starts, the ubuntu way. I log in to my other system and execute following commands accordingly code...
I have a Dell Vostro v13 laptop that was shipped with 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and it told me it could not upgrade the kernel. The error message said something about a problem with the kernel file. I can still run the system and have not rebooted since the upgrade, but I need to be able to reboot eventually.
The System Monitor says:
Release 9.10 (karmic)
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-19-generic
Everything I have read says that 9.10 includes kernel 2.6.31. So I am afraid to reboot now.
I removed the linux-image-2.6.32-31-generic package (and all the older ones) from my 64-bit Lucid Lynx machine. When I boot up, the grub menu only has memtest as a choice.
I am able to boot the machine with the LiveCD and can mount the drive. (look like it's read only mode right now.) But now, how do I reinstall the linux-image-2.6.32-31-generic package(or any package for that matter) onto the disk partition that represents the machine?
Is there any legal way to install an older version of linux-kernel (say 2.6.35) on 11.04? By legal I mean - no source-compiling and third-party repo adding.
View 8 Replies View RelatedA few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

PCI WLan TP-Link 951N (Atheros chipset, WLan N, driver ath9 was automatically installed)
How can I install the newest kernel, if possible? I believe I'm having issues with the 2.6.30 kernel and lockups. I would like to try a different kernel. If I can't upgrade to newest kernel, what about installing an older one? This was a fresh install of F11 about two weeks ago so I only have two kernels. The default one, 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686.PAE and 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586, which is the one when I added nvida kmod drivers. What does the PAE represent in the first kernel?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to install Ubuntu on approximately 50-60 netbooks. None of them have CD drives, and I don't want to have to install them individually, walking around with a USB stick. I figured the fastest way to install on so many machines is to use a combination of apt-cacher (http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-set-up...ith-apt-cacher) and netbooting. I have successfully booted one machine to test, but as soon as the kernel comes up, support for the network interface is gone. Specifically, the "atl1c" module is not included on the netboot initrd image. Also, I would like to try to use preseeding, and I need to get that onto the initrd as well.
So, to summarize my question: How can I create a custom install kernel and initrd? I have a feeling it's related to the "debian-installer" category in the package repository, but I have not found any good documentation about doing this.
I've been trying to install the latest driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run. I do ctrl+alt+f1 and login, then sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run and it gives me the license agreement, but after I accept and right after it gets to 100% it says it can't install the kernel or access or whatever. Has anyone done this installation and had the same problem but figured it out??

I just bought a newish asus x83vm-x2 and am dual-booting seven and lucid lynx. On my last two computers I had migrated completely to Ubuntu, but windows 7 has a few compelling features...Anyways- I'm having issues upgrading the kernel on my fresh install of ubuntu (not that it matters, but I installed via jump drive). In update manager, the kernel upgrades are grayed out.
In synaptic, I get these (current kernel version is 2.6.32.21.22 btw)-
Code:
linux-generic:
Depends: linux-image-generic (=2.6.32.24.25) but 2.6.32.21.22 is to be installed
linux-image-generic:[code]....
It appears as thought "linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic" is not in the repository... but if that were the case, you'd think that my machine would just auto-update to an earlier version. IDK- I'm confuddled.
How do you install an f12 kernel from koji without having to also retrieve the dependencies it asks for individually?

i need to install openSUSE 11.2 from an USB stick. I followed this article SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE using the openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.iso. Unfortunately the kernel provided in this image doesn't load on my target as it needs a few extra modules for its chipset.
Thus i copied our custom kernel (which is verified to run on the target) and its initrd to the usb stick and i also created a new entry in the syslinux.config. The kernel loads, but then it can't find the root device.Does anybody know, how i need to configure the initrd to make the USB stick the root device?
