I've been trying to install the latest driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run. I do ctrl+alt+f1 and login, then sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run and it gives me the license agreement, but after I accept and right after it gets to 100% it says it can't install the kernel or access or whatever. Has anyone done this installation and had the same problem but figured it out??
View 4 RepliesI installed the latest kernel liquorix (2.6.35) but when i want to install the Nvidia driver downloaded on the Nvidia website (256.53), i have an error message because Nvidia doesn't found the kernel source tree.
I install linux-image-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb, linux-headers-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb and build-essential. I don't understand why the installation doesn't works.
I'm a newbie to Linux and I'm using offline ubuntu 9.04 and now I have problem installing Nvidia driver which I don't have access to internet to download driver. Can you show the way to download Nvidia driver? I downloaded from Nvidia Site but I still need internet access to install it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Lucid Lynx on both my machines in the interest of sitting and waiting for the Unity/Gnome 3 storm to blow over. On the HP (see below), everything works great, and I've followed instructions online on how to upgrade to LibreOffice, upgrade the kernel to 2.6.38 using the kernel PPA, etc.
However, on the IBM, I'm using Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers. These work well on the stock kernel that 10.04 installed (2.6.32-32), but installing 2.6.38 seems to break the driver. If I install the driver first, and then the kernel on top, X stops working and I have to revert to the default, generic driver to get back in. Once there, I cannot install the driver again. The Additional Drivers dialog goes through the motions, but then drops a "systemerror: installarchives() failed" error message.
So, is there a different version of the driver I should be trying to install? I should clarify at this point I tried all three options the Additional Drivers dialog provided me, all gave the same result (version 96, version 173, and version current).
Or should I leave the kernel at 2.6.32? Is there any downside to leaving it?
I would like to install above mentioned driver. I need to prepare kernel for this instalation, but this information I didnt find on openSUSE pages. I add openSUSE 11.3 KDE

This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.

So after getting around the Fakeraid bug, and the grub bug, and all the other bugs killing my system fixed and then i moved on to install my video driver. There was nothing in Administration>Hardware Drivers, so i downloaded the latest driver for my two 8600m gt cards. Did the whole ctrl+alt+f2 and then stopping xserver and then running the driver install only to run into yet another damn bug(see log below)
I have tried fixing it by doing what other threads have said to do e.g:[URL] still nothing. Below is the Nvidia log.

I've built a new kernel (2.6.34) on our workstation at work. It boots and runs beautifully, but there is one minor problem. I created the kernel as a Debian package along with the kernel headers. Upon installing both and attempting to build the nVidia driver for said kernel, the installer tells me that it cannot determine the version and quits. This happens even if I manually specify the path to the headers. What's going on here, did I miss something during my compilation of the new kernel?

I have not previously compiled or configured a kernel so I largely followed the instructions from OpenSUSE 11.2 - How to compile a Kernel for Newbies.The currently installed kernel is 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop. The graphics card is an ASUS EN9600GSO (512MB).
In Yast, I installed gcc, make, kernel-devel (v. 2.6.37.1-1.2) and kernel-desktop-devel (v. 2.6.37.1-1.2). Per the "hard way" instructions, I did not install kernel-source.
I am fairly new to Linux. My machine is running Debian 5.0.5 with gcc version 4.3. When I try to install the Nvidia QuadroFX 3450 driver I got from the Nvidia web site I get an error saying:
"The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.1) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.3)....."
Does this mean my gcc version is too new for the driver? if so, how do I roll back to a older version?
I tried to install NVIDIA audio drivers on fc10 (2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.i686).

When trying to install the nvidia graphics driver I get the following error-message:
ERROR: The kernel header file '/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h' does not exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files in '/usr/src/linux' have not been configured. How do I configure the kernel source files?
The rest of the message is " located in /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-server/build". The version is Ubuntu server 8.04. Why can't it, and how can I help it along?
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy problem is on installing nvidia driver on fc12 32bit but, first of all, as i understood the pae kernel requires more than 4gb of ram,i have a 2.2 ghz cpu with 2 gb ram,but when i run command:uname -r it answers: 2.6.31.5-127.PAE [i have fc12 32 bit] when we try to download linux we have a 32bit edition or 64bit edition,do we have an edition which is only for pae? or when we install for example the 32bit edition on a computer with more than 4gb of ram then the kernel automatically will change to be a pae kernel??

OK, the problem is i was prompted to install some proprietary drivers and so i did but thats when the problems started. After reboot i couldn't get the GUI or gdm (not sure what to refer it to) to work. It goes directly to a terminal screen every time so i actually reinstalled Ubuntu and tried installing the drivers all different ways but no luck. i also can get into recovery mode and do low graphics. the driver version im trying to get working is nvidia 260.19.12. my graphics card is a geforce 7 series cant remember the number i have a 32bit processor.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.
I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

I've seen may similar issues to mine, but some are different and others are identical, but have been resolved since in the repositories. I install Maverick from CD, reboot, update via update manager, reboot, install nVidia driver via additional hardware gui, reboot and I can't get into X, I get tty1 instead with a text login prompt.

I have both an onboard and PCI-E nVidia graphics adapters but my PCI-E one is primary.
I've often installed Debian Netinstall and added the nVidia driver for my monitors. I just purchased a new PC that has this as part of its description:AMD A4-5000 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics..I have monitors connected to both its analog and digital outputs. Larger distros have enabled a good video driver automatically, but I need to know how to do this for my Debian Netinstall partition. The video performance is horribly slow right now.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis was my first experience with Ubuntu, I was told to switch the hard drives on my computer and put the Windows drive in a safe place for the install. The first time I did the install on the hard drive (which was the clean second hard drive that came with my computer), I either didn't realize I believe I didn't realize I had to click a button and thought the install had gotten stuck, and therefore cut off the install midway through. The second time around the install went without a hitch, and I was able to boot to desktop once. There, I was notified that I needed/should install NVIDIA drivers, I believe version 173 was listed as the next most recent drives (the other was "current"), I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7350LE graphics card, and after installing the drivers, I went to the restart menu as directed and clicked restart, not shut down but restart, and there were several listed errors on the text/DOS screen, shutdown errors I believe (the errors were 5 digits and were something like 56759 or something like that, I can't be certain if I'm remembering right, though, but there were two errors going over again). I then proceeded to turn off the computer manually, and upon it coming on again, instead of the normal Ubuntu flash screen before login, a more choppy Ubuntu 10.10 screen popped up and it led me to the DOS mode, where I was able to login, but it did me no good because I don't know command logic for Ubuntu. The best I did (its the best I ever do when these things happen) is get menus to pop up that are basically useless. I turned the computer off and on again three times, and tried booting directly from disk, but that failed.
I'm actually using the same computer I just reinserted the Windows drive back in after the frustrating experience. Windows has been giving me problems itself, and I really wanted to switch to Ubuntu but I need to know that this is a fluke and not the norm. I can live with this sort of thing being so uncommon I must have did something that was very strange and out of the ordinary to my computer. But if its commonplace, I want to know that too, because that's just something I can't live with.
I realize that many have had the issue of getting a black screen when booting up. I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. Following the install ubuntu now boots to a black screen and nothing more. View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a followup/secondary question from another post earlier this morning.[URL].. Info: Lucid 10.04, 4GB ram, Nvidia video, home built pc. I'm fairly certain that when I enable the pae kernel this time, I'll get usage of the full 4GB of memory that I have installed.
The problem is, that I did enable the pae kernel earlier this week to test something out, but ran into a problem. It came up in "low graphics mode" (800x600). As you can image, I wasn't real thrilled about that.
I went to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to get the video driver straightened out. I figured it just needed one compiled for the pae kernel... Well, it didn't find one. Is there one? Is there a procedure to get one installed/compiled, if there isn't one?
I don't know if I want to mess with trying to get the Nvidia drivers working for pae, when I only stand to gain another ~700MB of memory. Currently showing 3.2GB. I'm not sure if its worth my trouble..
I was recently able to obtain a new laptop at work. Rather than reinstalling the OS, reconfiguring all of the software, and then copying over all of my data from my old laptop -- I decided to try to use dd to clone my drive. It worked pretty darn well (thanks Saikee!). However, I have two problems that I have noticed so far:
1) The system does not seem to offer me the option to install the proprietary nvidia driver. I was able to manually install the nvidia-glx-180 package and then edit xorg.conf appropriately and I'm running with the nvidia driver now. So this problem is resolved (though I still find it odd it didn't even offer my the "restricted hardware drivers" option in System -> Administration).
2) Wireless is not working. I checked dmesg and it doesn't seem to have any errors in it. Here is a list of things I have checked/found which I think might be relevant:
- Oddly enough it seems that my wired device always gets renamed from eth0 to eth1, and my wireless device gets renamed from wlan0 to wlan1. I'm not sure why (though I would prefer them to be eth0 and wlan0).
- dmesg output looks good shows some message about the wlan1 link not being ready

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
Can this be done similar to some other O/Ses so Nouveau doesn't pre-screw up the kernel for 3rd party drivers??? Would be great in F16 if we were given a choice re: wanting nouveau or not. I simply can not get F14 or F15 to work with the 270.xx drivers on recent equipment.

I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving just updated various files including the kernel using Package Manager I no longer seem to have the correct version of the Nvidia graphics driver. On previous updates this has been done automatically by the "kmod Nvidia" Metapackage. My last kernel was 2.6.32.19-163 fc12.i686.PAE and the Nvidia driver for that did get downloaded correctly. Looking on Yumex I cannot see a driver for this latest kernel listed.
