Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Missing - Able To Boot Into Partition

I had a dual boot system(WinXP and Ubuntu). But something happened and I was not able to boot into my Ubuntu partition. It gave GRUB missing error. I tried reformatting the dedicated 40 GB ubuntu partition to NTFS and again try to reinstall ubuntu. But now, when I install ubuntu through boot time install, it shows that my whole hard disk is empty( but I have windows XP on whole hdd at the moment) and do not give any other option but to use whole hdd.
Alternatively when I try to install it inside windows, then after rebooting it shows, no root file system defined error and neither gives any option to do so also ( this method worked earlier o my PC). At the moment, It still shows ubuntu and windowsXP at OS choice menu at boot time but when booting in ubuntu, it shows GRUB missing. (I don't have any ubuntu installation on my hard disk at the moment).

I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.

I just netinstalled Squeeze to a netbook with Windows7. The installation went well without any problem. Linux is also working OK. When I boot now, grub does not show Windows7. I took default settings during installation. I mean I did not do anything special. What should i do to fix it? Should I run osprober and grub-update?

I had ubu 904 and vista installed on an 80gb drive, i had a spare 80gb drive also. I setup a raid0 config in my bios, then installed ubu9.10 onto it. All was fine until the very end, and then it said grub failed to install.
So i rebooted, and im left with a blinking cursor. How do i install grub? Ive installed ubu a few times now and never had an issue so now im lost.

I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg
So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)

While installing with a separate /boot partition I cannot get two distinct copies of ubu installed on one machine and be able to choose between them. Each is installed on a different hard drive. x64 versions. I've had this issue both ways:

Ok, Grub 2 is very powerful, maybe it's the lagging documentation, or lack of tutorials that is the problem. But I don't know how to fix this. Do I start over without the /boot partition? I'm dual boot with Vista(TM) and UBUNTU(tm) and ran out of space on Ubuntu partition:I booted Ubuntu 10.04LTS live CD and shrank the VISTA. It would NOT let me grow the extended partition? So now I have:

I am new to Debian but have some basic experience with Linux and am currently trying to triple boot Windows 7, Fedora 16, and Debian on an HP Pavilion dv7. I have the Windows Boot Loader on my MBR because I've heard that Windows updates can cause boot issues if GRUB is installed there. This means that I've been installing GRUB in the /boot partition for each Linux distro and creating corresponding entries in the Windows boot menu.
This has worked in the past with both Fedora and Ubuntu, but I have not been able to work around it with Debian. When I choose my Debian option in the Windows boot loader, it loads GRUB but hangs after it prints "Welcome to GRUB!", and I have to restart the computer. I would like to hear what more experienced Linux users have to say both about why this isn't working for Debian and about if keeping the WIndows boot loader is the right way to go.
Also, here is my partition layout:
Partition 1: SYSTEM (HP pre-installed) (209 MB)
Partition 2: Windows Partition (472 GB)
Partition 3: Extended (160 GB)
1: /boot for Fedora (524 MB)
2: Physical Volume for other Fedora partitions (79 GB)
3: /boot for Debian (749 MB)
4: Physical Volume for other Debian partitions (80 GB)
118 GB free space
Partition 4: HP_TOOLS (HP pre-installed) (108 MB)

I set up my Dell Inspiron Laptop as Dual Boot -> Xp / Ubuntu 10.04. - all worked well. I had 2 installations of XP on this machine and I removed one - all worked well. I then went into XP and deleted the partion (4) that the old XP had resided on (using Easeus Partition Master) All NOT working well !! Now when booting the machine I get grub rescue> I did ls and got ....

Here's what I want to do. I have two separate HDD
HDD 1 : 160 GB (dedicated to windows, already working)
HDD 2 : 500 GB Will be using dedicated to ubuntu (not partitioned yet)
I want to use the HDD two only for linux and this HDD is not partitioned yet. What I want to do is
- A dedicated Grub partition (/boot) on HDD 2 (Do I really need it when I am using just two os? Will it work on second HDD?)
- / root partition
- /home partition
- /swap partition
- /fat32 partition (do I need it to share files with win?)

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

Noobish question on multibooting multiple Linux distros. I have four of the current major Linux distributions. Each has been installed and run individually (no other Linux distribution installed) in a dual-boot configuration with Windoze. No problem.
What I want to do is install all four Linux distributions and multiboot them. Reading the internet it would seem this is a simple task with GRUB. The short version being - install a Linux distro with a separate /boot partition for GRUB and use GRUB to boot the other Linux distros from the GRUB boot menu.
So I installed one of the Linux distros with a separate partition for /boot. The distro installer installed GRUB in /boot and correctly setup a dual-boot configuration with Windoze. GRUB was installed to the MBR. Next I installed a second Linux distro in its own root partition and told the distros installer NOT to install GRUB to the MBR, but rather, to the boot sector of the root partion of the second Linux distro. Installation was uneventful (and I could access the second Linux partition from the first installed Linux distro, things looked ok). Then I added to following to the installed (MBR - /boot) GRUB's menu.lst:

root (hd0,7)
chainloader +1 After which I rebooted the system and the new entry for the second Linux distro now appears in the GRUB boot menu. I selected the second Linux distro from the boot menu and got the following GRUB error: Error 5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt

i am having a problem with my dual boot setup. I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.

I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

I've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

I having a problem getting my grub loader to see one of my hard drives. I added a drive, and my grub loader lost track of where everything was. I couldn't get my old linux (Red Hat 9) so I installed SuSe on my new hard drive. But I need my be able to boot from my old hard drive because it has apps that only run on the earlier version. Apparently I altered my partitions while trying to make room for Ubuntu 10.04, and now I'm in a mess. For two weeks I have been searching the forums for a solution only to find instructions I don't understand or partial solutions.
Here's my situation.
I have an Acer AspireOne netbook (no CD, only USB).
I am able to access F2 setup, so I can prioritize the boot order. I can position my bootable (ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso) usb drive at the top of list, but when my computer reboots via usb, there's just a black screen with a white dash in the upper left corner that flashes.
When I boot with the hard drive I get:
So far, the only commands I have found that work are:
Now, like I said, I'm a newbie. But that hd0,5 concerns me; doesn't seem to fit.
I'm not concerned with saving data. I'm willing to start from scratch. I just can't get past that grub rescue prompt and I can't access my usb port so that I'm able to run the LiveCD.

I've been running a dual-boot ubuntu 11.04 64-bit and windows 7 64-bit for a while now, and recently got a new computer. I moved the hard drives to the new computer (one had both os's on it, the other was just a storage drive) and windows 7 would not boot, so I reinstalled it. I used a live cd to repair grub using boot repair /Boot-Repair) and everything looked to be going swell But when I tried to boot I got "invalid or damaged bootable partition" instead of a grub menu. so I went back and, copying and pasting the commands the program gave me, I manually removed and reinstalled grub on my ubuntu partition. same error. so, I backed up all my documents onto a third drive, wiped everything out, and started again. I installed win7 on one drive, and then when that was done, I installed ubuntu on the other. lo and behold when I tried to boot I got the same error message, and now I can't even boot from my windows drive. The ubuntu drive is fairly new and according to disk utility has no errors. Is this some problem with grub or what?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop which also have windows xp installed. After the installation I could boot to both Ubuntu and Windows. I then installed some updates from the update manager in Ubuntu 10.10 and after this the windows option in the grub boot menu is gone. The boot_info_script055.sh returned the following result

I have been foolish and accidentally deleted the 'Boot' folder from my Vista partition and now cannot boot Windows from the GRUB launcher. I'm not sure what to do next, since I can't find the recovery DVD either.
I managed to find a site with the 'bootmgr' file available to download but couldn't find anywhere to download the contents of the 'Boot' folder. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there any software that can be run in Ubuntu (which launches perfectly well of course) which might fix this?

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

Im running ubuntu 10.10 on a dual boot machine together with vista. When I tried to delete a partition in gparted I accidentaly deleted the general partition table so I had to run testdisk on a live cd to restore it. The problem is that once I had done that and rebooted I get the message bootmgr is missing. I suppose Testdisk deleted or overwrote mz grubloader.

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, windows XP boot option is missing from the boot loader window. The laptop has two ntfs partitions - one for windows recovery and the other one for XP. The recovery option is available in the boot loader. But XP is missing. I tried several suggestions from different forums but to no vail. Can somebody help ? The output of boot_info-script follows:

After a hard drive failure I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in the secondary drive. The intention was to have keep the machine functional until I could reinstall XP and have a dual boot. I replaced the failing drive and reinstalled XP.
The main reason for keeping windows is for using Itunes and a ton of music on the Ipod. I can get into the Ubuntu using Super Grub2 and did try repairing Grub 2 with rescutux. I can of course use the super grub2 disk to boot into Ubuntu but would like to repair Grub2 so I have the choice at boot without the disk.

I'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS 64bit. The Update Manager updated the kernel and then asked if I wanted to use the local version of the grub menu. The boot menu was getting so long I edited it to shorten it. Other options were also offered, like the builder's version, but I chose the local version and since then the new kernel doesn't show up in the boot menu. Sudo update-grub doesn't restore it to the menu.
How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?

Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.
Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.
