Ubuntu Installation :: Dedicated Grub Partition - Two HDD And Dual Boot

Here's what I want to do. I have two separate HDD
HDD 1 : 160 GB (dedicated to windows, already working)
HDD 2 : 500 GB Will be using dedicated to ubuntu (not partitioned yet)
I want to use the HDD two only for linux and this HDD is not partitioned yet. What I want to do is
- A dedicated Grub partition (/boot) on HDD 2 (Do I really need it when I am using just two os? Will it work on second HDD?)
- / root partition
- /home partition
- /swap partition
- /fat32 partition (do I need it to share files with win?)

After having tested Ubuttu 9.10 on a VM with Win XP Pro as host and running both Ubuntu 9.10 and 8.04 from a CD/CDR drive I decided to do an installation of 8.04 on a separate HD and import files.Installation seemed to work OK, but on reboot: no menu was shown to choose OS and the machine booted directly into Windows.Tried to boot directly from the "Ubuntu" HD in the BIOS boot menu and get the message "MBR error" full stop literally.The Ubuntu hard drive is no longer recognised in Windows , can't be acessed from the DOS prompt and obviously cannot be reformatted from there.Just for the record, I'm not totally excluding operator error from the cause

Im running VMware fusion on my mac book pro and i want to boot my physical ubuntu partition. After wasting hours trying to add the partitions directly into vmware grub complained that it couldn't find the correct partition.
I abandoned that avenue and created a 50MB vmware partition and installed GRUB2 on it so in the VMware i then attached the 50MB grub partition and the 250G physical drive. This all works fine however i cant seem to get GRUB2 to automatically populate the menu. On the GRUB2 partition i have /boot/grub/* and /etc/grub.d/ * and in the grub.cfg i have set GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false
however when i run update-grub i get an error saying something like "mkconfig-grub cannot find / is dev mounted?" i can manually run /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober and it prints out a list of all my partitions which i can paste into grub.cfg however i dont want to have to manually do this for each kernel upgrade.Im doing all this via a 10.04 live CD.

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

I have a dual boot drive, one is WinXp the other Ubuntu 10.04. I don't know why, but my ubuntu partition became corrupted (booting from live cd and inputing fdisk -l in the terminal, shoes my partition as unknown type) My Grub was on this partition, and therefore I cannot boot neither one of my two OSs. I would like to recover my linux partition, I figure I can do that only from my WinXp partition, but I don't know where and how to install Grub.
Also, If anyone knows how I could recover from the live CD without booting Windows, please speak up, that would make everything much easier. Another thing, it would be just super if I could recover my whole partition, not just the data, because I would hate to reinstall all the stuff that I had on my Ubuntu.

So my computer has ubuntu 9.10 installed 1st and I want to install win 7 in a separate partition. Basically, ubuntu 1st, win 7 later so far from what I learned from search results, grub 2 have problem with win 7 installed later and what was recommended was install win 7 before ubuntu. how ever I do not have the time to start over again because there are too many things to back up or install again. can I simply revert grub 2 to grub 1 again and resolve the problem?

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

I'm trying to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu WITHOUT using Grub. This is to support Bitlocker encryption.
I followed this guide, and now when I select Ubuntu I get a Grub> prompt and no ubuntu.
I feel like I'm halfway there, I just need to get Grub to load correctly or something.

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

I updated from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 via Ubuntu updater. Worked nicely. Until I had to use Win 7 for a moment, so I went to the Grub boot menu and picked Win 7. Nothing is happening. Just a black screen with blinking underscore to the top left corner. I never had this problem with 9.10, so I am confused. I tried looking around and nothing helped. Be noted that I am an amateur with Ubuntu coding and installing. I did hear that this is already a common issue now.

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).
I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot.What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

I'm trying to understand how I can partition my hard disk to allow for a dual boot (Windows & Ubuntu) as well as allow access to a certain set of files from both Windows & Ubuntu. So far I understand that I'll need:
1 Windows boot partition ~2-4GB
1 Linux boot partition ~2-4GB
1 Linux swap partition ~1-2 GB
But I don't know:How can I keep my non-boot linux files & folders -- /home, /usr, etc. -- separate from the boot files? Do I need another partition? If yes, what size & format -- FAT32, ext3, etc. -- should it be?
If I separate, for instance, the "/home" folder only where do the remaining folders and files reside?
How can I access certain files with both Windows & Ubuntu? Do I need yet another partition, formatted in FAT32?

I would like to install XP to /dev/sda5,sda6 being karmic. (I may have a dying dvd burner as was unable to install it yesterday but..) I got in a dreadful mess with grub after attempting to upgrade to Lucid,I needed to reinstall anyway. Will I be able to dual boot or should I just start from scratch?

I dual booted ubuntu with vista a while back, but I was running out of space on both partitions. So I thought I'd install ubuntu on another slightly smaller HDD from an old laptop. I thought all the ubuntu and grub stuff were on that one partition, so I thought if I just deleted it, all would be good. I isn't. Now when I boot up, I get a message saying 'Error, no such partition exists' and then 'Grub rescue:' and an input. So what I want now, is well, basically to be able to boot windows. I'm guessing I either have to remove grub, or just make it forget I ever had Ubuntu.

My system has 2 hard drives, a 400gb master and a 250gb slave. sda (my main 400gb Windows drive) has XP on it. The slave (sdb) has 3 partitions:
sdb1 is for my downloads (NTFS ~180gb)
sdb2 has Kubuntu 8.10 installed (ext3, 60gb)
and sdb3 is the swap (3gb).
I want to do a destructive upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 - I have the CD already and burnt. I know I have to select the partitions manually due to the complicated setup, I know I need to format the sdb2 partition to ext4, mount point /, and the swap can stay the same. On which hard drive should I install the bootloader? I can't remember where it is installed now, all I know is I had a lot of problems with the install.

I have Windows XP SP3 running on my Desktop PC and wish to dual boot it with Ubuntu 10.10. This isn't the issue as I can do this and it gives me the GRUB menu but selecting Windows XP won't do anything - or so it seems How long should it take to boot into Windows from the GRUB menu?

11.04 installed on free space I had setup but it didn't install Grub2 for a dual boot (with Windows 7 Pro). It may have gotten confused with my disk setup. Drives and their groupings (Windows lingo):
- Windows 7 Pro on C-drive (appears to be sdb2), it is a SSD
- The free space was setup on this SSD and Ubuntu is located on sdb5 (Linux) and sdb6 (swap space).
- Applications stored on D-drive (RAID0 with 2 small SSDs using RST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology).
- data on a RAID card using HDs in RAID0.
Small wonder it got confused, if that is the problem. I have a LiveCD I can use to boot, is that the best? What are the commands to install. Is there a better way?

I have been using Ubuntu for a while now on a netbook and even installed it on another pc, but I never tried dual-booting before... I just recently built a pc (my first custom build), and I'm having major difficulties getting a dual-boot running with Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install these on one hdd. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or not, but the bios doesn't seem to like grub... I installed Win 7 first, and before installing Ubuntu on a separate partition, Win 7 would boot up fine. (Although, sometimes the bios would ignore my key presses for entering the bios menu or the boot-menu... When I only had Windows installed.)
When I turn on the pc, I mostly get a blinking cursor, with no messages at all. Nothing would boot at all, grub doesn't seem to load, and no OS would load by default. This would even happen sometimes after I set CD-ROM as the first item on the boot order list, trying to boot from the Ubuntu liveCD since there was no way for me to reach either of my installs on my HDD. I tried several suggestions I found online, and nothing seems to help. I even tried both grub 1.99 and grub 0.97, but still not much luck, (Although, grub legacy seems to load slightly more often...) I don't really want to have to resort to using Ubuntu through a VM, but it looks like this is the only option left... Is there some way I can dual boot with something other than grub?
Here's something I noticed after trying Ubuntu a few times. I'm not sure how relevant this is to my issue but, at times, on booting from a liveCD, I see several lines appearing that say something like "over-current change on port 2" should I be worried about this? Is something wrong with my mobo or psu? Another thing and this was before installing Ubuntu, when I boot up the pc, my keyboard is sometimes disabled until it's re-plugged in to a usb port. Maybe this has something to do with over-current charge? I'm just trying to figure out if anything needs to be replaced... I got sick of having to replugin the keyboard since I was constantly restarting the pc, so I started using a less fancy keyboard and it seems to be recognized most of the time (sometimes the bios would still ignore my boot-menu key press attempts).

Absolute newbie to Linux (assume I'm a complete dummyhead. I don't understand anything about Linux.). Just bought 500GB HDD. Made 3 partitions, 1 for Linux, 1 for Windows, and 1 for data.
1st, installed Win XP on 2nd partition (NTFS)
Then installed 64-Bit Ubuntu on 1st partition (Ext4)
(Created a 2 GB partition and for the swap file.)
Not sure which partition is primary, extended, etc., never really understood all that stuff anyways. XP was working perfectly, till I installed Ubuntu. Now, it just boots straight into Ubuntu, doesn't give the option to boot into XP. Tried everything I know, but it will not give the option to go into XP.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop currently and my mom would like to have it on hers as well. However, she does not want to get rid of Windows 7, or use Wubi (for some reason). So, my only choice is to dual boot it. While I was installing it onto my laptop there was an option to choose the partitioning. There wasn't an option to do this on my her laptop though because you can only have 4 partitions on a hard drive apparently. The partitions are:
NAME (TYPE)
System (NTFS)
C: (NTFS)
Recovery (NTFS)
HP TOOLS (FAT32)
Is there anyway to backup a partition (Like Recovery) and make it bootable from a flash drive/CD? Or is there any other work around from this?

I've been using ubuntu exclusively on my two laptops lately, for coding and all of my other work. I plan on installing it onto my desktop now for work as well, but I would like to retain Windows 7 so I don't have to worry about compatibility for all of the games I love to play. My question is this:When setting up my partitions, how much space (and what format) should I set aside for windows to write and read games from? I have a 500GB hard drive currently, and was planning the partitions as:
1. Windows 7 (NTFS, setup with Windows installer) ~20 GB
2. File Storage (NTFS, set up with the Ubuntu install partitioner) ~452 GB
3. Ubuntu (EXT3, set up with Ubuntu install partitioner) ~ 20 GB
4. Swap (~2x the size of my RAM) ~ 8GB
The plan is to have Windows install and execute games from the NTFS File Storage partition, while being able to access the same partition from Ubuntu for my documents, code files, music, etc.I don't know if this would work, and I'm also not sure what my file system will be like (windows or linux-y?) if it did. Will this work? Or is there a more elegant solution?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system.On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.

2.26 GHz Quad-Core CPU
4.0 GB DDR3 RAM
Hard Drive #1: Toshiba 500 GB 7200 RPM
Hard Drive #2: Toshiba 100 GB 7200 RPM
What I was thinking of doing was putting Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) and Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) on the 100 GB hard drive - with just under a 75/25 split towards W7 (approximately 70 GB for W7 and 22 GB for Ubuntu). Would this be optimal, having the operating systems on one drive separate from nearly everything else?
Another question that I was unsure about with this setup was the swap area. It doesn't need to be on the same HDD as the running OS to be utilized, does it?
Also, any partition size adjustment recommendations.

I am planning to move my main OS from Windows to Ubuntu (Yeah I am that impressed) but I wish to move windows to my current smaller hard drive until I find all ubuntu replacement programs i can use then eventually eject the windows drive. The problem is has we all know who dual-boot you have to install windows first before ubuntu as the windows mbr is when grub is stored and gets wiped when you install windows.
It must be possible to add windows as secondary OS while keeping / or reinstating grub must it not it surely (eg on 10.4LTS release it would be ok, but if i installed windows vista or 7 on my secondary hardisk it would destroy grub).
