I have a HP Pavilion dm4-1177 (640GB HDD, 6GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit os, Intel core i5 2,4GHz).I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (both 32 bit and 64 bit) using the wubi, on a separate partition I keptexclusively for linux (10GB). During the mid-way of installation, it said:

I have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:
Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f
I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.

So I cant seem to be able to install fedora 15. I think it is the disk. I have windows 7 already installed (and would like to keep it) It was installed on the end of the hard drive leaving a 100 GB chunk in the center of the drive open and unformatted (this may be the problem). Anyway I used the live cd and tried to format the unformatted partition to exf but it gives me this error

XP and Ubuntu are on different drives and they were booting ok prior the the reformatting. With the Ubuntu drive selected as the 1st hd boot device in Bios: I can boot into Ubuntu ok if I select it in the Grub2 menu If I select XP in the Grub menu I get:
"error:no such device c8e4918ce4917cfe"
If I select the XP drive as the 1st hd boot device in Bios I can boot straight into XP.So that is ok. This thread: [URL] has given me a clue that: "The UUID listed in grub.cfg is wrong In some cases the UUID in the above search line in grub.cfg is wrong. This can for example happen if the UUID has changed due to formatting or partitioning. Bugs The "search" function is plagued by various bugs (see [1], [2]), causing the search to fail."
However the fix in that thread gives me this result: "At the grub menu at boot up (you might have to hold the "shift" key or press "Esc" to get to the Grub menu) select the OS you are trying to boot. But do not press "enter", press "e" instead to edit the menuentry. Delete the line
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 86d32ee3-aec6-490b-8dab-e5cfff9c7af9

I installed ubuntu today by installing Wubi and after downloading i rebooted computer and selected ubuntu but i got an error saying 'Try (hd0,0): FAT16: NO WUBILDR' and there was few more but i forgot and at the end it says 'Cannot find GRLDR in all device Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart'. it used to work when i had vista...

I have a raid 0 setup with 2 x 1TB drives. I have an ASUS P8P67 LE motherboard and am using Interl RST for the Raid setup. I'm utterly ignorant of raid and therefore forgive any mistakes... I already had windows 7 installed and was attempting to dual boot ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu from CD. The raid was picked up properly as only one drive by ubuntu. So it picked up the windows MBR and the main windows partition. I resized the main partition and used the "install ubuntu and windows 7 side by side" option. Installation went fine but once I restarted the PC I was welcomed by a grub rescue screen with the message: "error: no such device e196.....". Edit: I used the Windows 7 disc to repair the windows bootloader so I can now boot into Windows 7.
Before doing so I used gparted on the live cd to check the partitions on the drives. The only ones present were the MBR and windows one. So ubuntu seemingly didn't install... Although GRUB did... I was advised by someone on the ubuntu IRC chat to avoid trying to reinstall ubuntu at that point just in case there was an error in the partitioning process. I've since checked the state of the partitions from within windows and there's the MBR partiton, the windows partiton AND the partition that I created for ubuntu... 965MB of the partition that I created is listed as used space as well...

When installing I am selecting the manual partitioning scheme( I have arch on another partition). After I have selected my custom partitions and their mount points it starts the installation but almost immediately it gives the error message that it cannot create a partition on the specified one, as it is used by the OS. I have also tried to create partitions through gparted in the live session but to no avail. I am sure that no partitions are mounted or in use by the system, I have checked this using the mount and fuser commands. I also tried the oem installation but the result the same.

What just happened was that I was experiencing some serious blue screen errors in Windows all of a sudden, so I loaded up my recovery partition for windows, and ran the "Restore complete system function". At some point, it had to restart, and I got the BIOS error "Unable to detect operating system". Eventually I got openSUSE to work again by reinstalling it using my DVD. However, now, whenever I load my windows partition, I get a windows error that says it cannot configure Windows on my hardware! The furthest it gets is a blue Windows screen that says "Please wait while Windows continues to configure your hardware."
My windows version is Vista, and I use openSUSE 11.3 as my primary partition. My question is this: How can I re-install Windows onto my partition? I have a recovery partition setup still, but I'm afraid that the Restore Complete System function will mess with my linux partitions again!
All I want Windows for is to play WoW! Running WoW through Wine is fail on my laptop for some reason, its far too slow and problematic. Please help me... some Linux forums just trashed me for using Windows at all, but its my only option available for my particular spec of computer to play this game, so that type of advice doesn't help me much. Feasible alternatives to a Windows partition would be nice, but Wine clearly doesn't work for me like I desire.

what now trying to mount partition get this error this is the partition ubuntu 9.10 is installed on and upon reboot error no device with a long string. mount: can't find /dev/sda6/mnt in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
so now that I believe I've successfully mounted the partition how do I direct the bootloader to this partition /dev/sda6 on /media/11076e45-e27d-470b-bb6d-6894f7809a0c type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit)

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with Ubuntu-desktop installed.I've been using kubuntu for sometime now but i dont know much technical things about it. I have two hard discs (160GB SATA and 80GB PATA).I have just installed Windows XP Professional and then reinstalled grub2 from a live CD. Both OS are on 80GB PATA drive.The Grub menu at boot time has "Windows XP Professional" entry in it. Kubuntu and Ubuntu work fine.When i go to bios and change my hard disc boot order, grub is bypassed and Windows boots and works good. I have a machine which was running Windows 7 64bit, the installation was working fine. I decided to install Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on a separate hard drive. Now, Ubuntu works great, but I try to boot Windows through GRUB (2, BTW) I get the following error:
error: No Such Device 3624fcb624fc7a67
Tried running grub-update, no avail. Also tried running a repair disk with my Windows 7 install disk-also no luck. EDIT: Also, if it helps, I can see both the System Reserved and full Windows partitions in Ubuntu.

I have been using my desktop as a dual boot machine for several months now. The primary hard drive with windows on it died, and since we have been using ubunto 9.10 exclusively, I just removed the dead drive, changed the jumpers on the secondary drive to primary and did a clean install on the drive which presumably formats the disk before installing. When I try to boot from the hard drive i get the following message:

I have a netbook i am quite sure it is based on the msi wind which came with windows XP installed. I noticed that on the hard drive there is a partition called recovery EISA Configuration. I am not 100% sure what it contains but I am quite sure it is todo with the image saying "the tec guys" that comes up when I boot up, this is software I am never going to use if I have any critical problems I will reformat or be able to fix it myself. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu netbook remix on this partition that has a total size of 2.93GBs? I know it is slightly below the minimum requirement, however i am thinking that I could simply prevent some software that I am not likely to use from being installed with the operating system.

What I am trying to accomplish, is have 3 partitions on my hard drive. The first one being Windows 35GB. The second being 15GB Ubuntu. The remaining just being backups. I have set up partitions for this, but I have failed thus far in finding a way to install to the Ubuntu partition I have created. Should I have left that space unallocated? How would I make this work?

I've been using Ubuntu since 2009, but recently I had to reinstall Windows (and Ubuntu.)The problem is that ever since I reinstalled Windows the Ubuntu installation doesn't recognize the Windows partition. I've got a 500GB HDD, and the installation says there's 500GB of free space.Is there any way to make Ubuntu recognize the Windows partition while installing, or is the only solution reinstalling Windows?

yesterday i upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During installation i also upgraded grub to version 2. It said that there were two options that i could choose to boot and i choose both. Installation finished with out a hitch. When i attempted restart my laptop i got this message:
error: no such device: 12631218-8ac6-4505-b4cb-a66a1de1814f
grub rescue>
I tried the command help and received a message saying that the help command was not recognized. So i then gave Google a bit of a work out and have tried reinstalling grub and manually coping the grub files all to no avail. The problem i believe stems from how i have Ubuntu installed. I have Ubuntu installed like an application on windows 7 on a separate partition on my hard drive. Looking back on it i'm not to sure why i choose that route, but that is how it is installed.

I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"
After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?
EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?
EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.

I just did a clean install of 11.04. Now when I try to boot the machine I get the following error: Quote:

error: you need to load the kernel first
Then I am taken to the Grub menu. Selecting anything from the Grub menu brings this error back up. So now I'm stuck with a computer that won't work.?

My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 1525 with Dual boot Windows vista as well as Linux mint. I was trying to install Ubuntu over Linux Mint, but it is not detecting the existing partitions asking me to go ahead and edit the partitions manually (which I am not familiar with). Earlier when I was installing Linux Mint or SUSE, it was detecting the existing partitions and could install easily. Currently I am sure how to go about, but I would like to install Ubuntu badly.

I have a 32g usb stick and I am trying to install Ubuntu on it. But I want to keep 16g as storage space so that I can have it as a normal USB storage for daily use. It's my understanding that I need to create 2 partition ( Since I want to use ext4 for the system which windows doesn't recognize?). But when I created two logical partition and installed ubuntu onto the second partition <sdc6>, I can't seem to boot into there,the screen stays on the white cursor blinking mode, and the usb isn't being read. Is there any way that I could do this? I just want half used as storage and half as Ubuntu system.

I'm installing 11.04 on a friend's laptop. I'm fairly familiar with Ubuntu, and I'm sure when I've install it previously it didn't take this long to resize the partition. It's been going for around 15 minutes. The loading cursor is still spinning, and the HDD activity light is on almost solidly, but it's been a long time with no updates. The log says only "ubuntu ntfsresize: Please make a test run using both the -n and -s options before real resizing!". Nothing appears to be happening. Is this normal? Never mind, it failed.

I am having trouble getting a dual boot setup on Ubuntu remix on a netbook. The install went fine, but then windows would not book. I had a windows error. So I reinstalled windows, and rebuilt grub. Now when I try to launch windows from the grub menu it says "error: no such device: 0a82ff1982ff0849". How do I go about fixing that? I can boot to Ubuntu fine now.
