I upgraded to 11.04, and in the process it said third-party software sources needed to be disabled.Now, when I go into Software Sources nothing happens (the form doesn't open up)Is there a command line prompt to enable third-party sources? I think this might be why my keyboard/mouse aren't working.
I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04 - following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.
I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
I am looking to upgrade a box of mine using command line only. I am going from 10.04 to 10.10 and have changed all instances of lucid to maverick within the sources.list file but now I don't want to continue until I can be safe to upgrade by disabling the third-party repos. How can I disable these using the command line? Should I just move the sources.list.d folder? Any other ways I'm missing?
every time i install ubuntu i have to add official ppas of many softwares like transmission, libreoffice. vlc, deluge and many other softwares i use. is there any script or software that will allow me to create my own list and set up the ppas when i run it?
I have searched on the internet but didn't manage to find out how to flag 3rd party repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/50unattended-upgrades. It installs all updates from the stock Ubuntu repos but none from 3rd party repositories I later added (e.g. Chromium PPA, Skype, etc.). I understand I have to manually add the lines but I'm not sure what's the format for this. How to do this? Here's how my 50unattended-upgrades file looks like:
Code: // Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin, archive) pairs Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins { "Ubuntu karmic-security"; "Ubuntu karmic-updates"; };
// List of packages to not update Unattended-Upgrade::Package-Blacklist { //"vim"; //"libc6"; //"libc6-dev"; //"libc6-i686"; };
// Send email to this address for problems or packages upgrades. If empty or unset then no email is sent, make sure that you have a working mail setup on your system. The package 'mailx' must be installed or anything that provides /usr/bin/mail. //Unattended-Upgrade::Mail "root@localhost"; // Automatically reboot *WITHOUT CONFIRMATION* if a // the file /var/run/reboot-required is found after the upgrade //Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot "false";
I just tried adding the same repository to my desktop pc as well separate install separate machine same error, while checking software sources in gnome nothing seems out of the ordinary. My desktop was updated today via the update manager.
i've just upgraded to Natty, and there are lots of 3rd party software sources that were disabled during the upgrade, and i've enabled them again. But then when i try to refresh my update cache, they fail to download. these are the list of software sources that fail to download:
W:Failed to fetch http://linux.dropbox.com/ubuntu/dist...amd64/Packages 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...amd64/Packages 404 Not found , W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/alecive/ant...source/Sources 404 Not Found
[code]....
and now most of these softwares appear in my 'computer janitor' to be removed (which obviously i wouldn't want that..
I have 3rd party software that I need to install. It is called VNMRJ. It is packed as one .tar. I extracted the .tar to the desktop (under root) and want to start the installation. However, during the installation process, all .tar files included the the package (sub directories) can't be extracted by the installation routine. For every .tar I get the error
tar: /root/Desktop/vnmrj21b_inova_01106/code/common/com.tar: Cannot open: Permission denied Installation of VNMR failed tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now DONE: 112 KB
Ubuntu rocks but I am having trouble enabling PAE.
I want to do it to have my full 4Gb RAM recognized by my 32bit OS. At the moment System Monitor only recognizes 3.2Gb and the command "free -m" shows the same value.
I followed these instructions but they don't seem to work: [URL]
PS: The point is to really understand how to achieve this and not to start a debate "32bit vs 64bit OS choice"
I am installing a hp officejet pro 8500 all in one printer to knoppix 6.0.1. install hangs saying i need to disable cd sources in etc/apt/source.list. How do i do this?
I'm facing some problems with FC11 in my PPC G4. I tried installing and everything went well until it reaches a stage where I'm being prompted to select my network interface.

I was told to simply go into the fstab folder to allow myself permissions to execute files without becoming root, but instead of following it blindly I need a 2nd opinion. I cannot install a specific program because of configuration problems even though I downloaded all the gcc, g++ etc packages.
I have recently just installed UBR 9.10 on my acer aspire one. ran into some issues connecting to the internet but have all been fixed now (hadn't disabled ivp6, kicking myself in the head for not figuring it out earlier)
anyway, as soon as that problem had been fixed (can access the internet now fine through firefox) another had arisen. i found that i couldnt download anything through the ubuntu software center, update the system through update manager, or even download anything through terminal.
In my netbook /etc/apt/sources.list contains the cdrom asdeb cdrom:[Ubuntu ....]/hardy main restrictedIf I keep the iso file in /ubuntu and then want it to be refreshed during #/etc/apt/apt-get updatehow must I motify /etc/apt/sources.list

I installed Squeeze in Virtualbox 4 and I need to enable the main repos for debian after several google searches I gave up. I am sure this isn't the first time this has been asked and I am sure that it is a common question.

1.) I made a few updates that I found a website my friend sent me: http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2009/...nstalling.html
however, when I would go to enter the APT line in the other sources in the software sources windows then close and reload it I would get the following error message code...
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I also attached a screen shot of the error message window.
2.) I don't know if i should post another issue I had, but when i try to run GNUnet it says that Daemon is not running. I'm not sure what that is all about.

Flowing from the upgrade to Lucid a number of my previous other software sources have been disabled. I tested a few and there was no software at the address for Lucid. I know that in due course some will have software. Do I have to manually check the sources via my browser or will ubuntu enable them automatically?
I have updated from 9.10 to 10.04 on line via Update Manager. Update Manager messed up my sources. Blocked most of them on update. I unblicked them and changed everything to Lucid from Karmic. No luck. Errors all the time:
Code: W: GPG error: [URL] lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 40976EAF437D05B5 W: GPG error: [URL] Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 40976EAF437D05B5 W: GPG error: [URL] Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 40976EAF437D05B5 I cannot add gpg keys and use for example canonical.
I am developing a customization of ubuntu for my company, as we mirror ubuntu repositories it would be great that the distro's sources.list be configured for using our repos instead of ubuntu's official on install, without the need of me going PC by PC making such configuration myself... How could this be achieved? Is there documentation about it? I have only managed to find data on how to configure the sources.list after installation.

I have an assignment as a CS student to code over Ubuntu Kernel but I am surely a beginner. I need to download all the source files of the Ubuntu kernel source code, make some changes then compile and use it as a custom kernel.
