Ubuntu :: Nautilus Goes Weird After Dual Monitor

Feb 17, 2010

it is sometimes triggered when i activate dual monitor (i'm using nvidia-settings). Actually the entire computer seemingly changes its theme, but after simply running System > Appearance, all goes back to normal except for nautilus (that includes icons in the desktop). please see attached image.Logging out then logging back in solves the problem, but i don't want to log out just to correct the problem. Is there anything i need to restart to bring it back to normal?i've tried "compiz --replace" and "compiz --restart" and even "metacity --replace" but it doesn't do anything.by the way, i'm using ubuntu 9.10 64bits, using the default theme, nvidia driver (the default which comes with ubuntu 9.10),using compiz.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus And USB Drive Weird Behavior

Jul 14, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) with Gnome Classic (no effects) desktop. I have an external USB drive on which I have cloned my sda drive that contains my Ubuntu partition and an XP partition. Both of these partitions mount automatically. For some reason, Nautilus opens randomly on its own for each of these partitions. When this happens, two copies of Nautilus open; one for each of the partitions. I have not been able to discern any pattern for when nautilus opens. This actually began to happen in Maverick shortly before I upgraded to Natty. Any ideas on what the cause is and how I can stop this from happening?

Ubuntu :: Weird Split Screen Effect On Arcade Monitor / Fix It?

Aug 30, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop so I thought I'd also run it on my arcade machine. The monitor can handle a resolution up to at least 704x513 60hz (the resolution the original arcade game used) and uses composite sync. I've spent some time using xrandr to get the resolution, refresh rate and sync polarities that I need.

These are the commands I used to set my resolution.code...

But it has the same effect since I have the hsync and vsync wired into a composite sync anyway.

What I get is this weird split screen effect that's in the picture. It looks like I'm missing something I just cant figure it out!

Hardware :: Dual Monitor - 2nd Monitor Not Coming Up - Xorg.conf Missing Something?

Oct 19, 2009

This is a repost of my initial problem, I need some one who knows what they are doing more than I too take a look at this command output and give some sort of direction/clue/etc on what I'm doing wrong or missing.

Is my xorg.conf missing some vital line(s) or setting?

My best guess is that i'm missing something to tell the Xserver to use both screens, as the Xorg.0.log does not talk about trying to bring up the intel display; but this is just a hunch.

I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2 monitors: on-board intel video and a PCI nvidia display: I am using my nvidia display fine, but still can not get my 2nd display (the intel) working. What the heck am I missing?

Jan 15, 2011

Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

Fedora :: Dual Monitor / Dual Workspace?

Apr 23, 2011

I am attempting to use dual monitors in Fedora 14 using an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card (not that I think that has anything to do with anything, but who knows), and want it to where my second monitor is its own virtual workspace so that I can switch between my other workspaces on my original monitor without switching the workspace on the second monitor. This way, I can watch movies or what-not on my TV (2nd monitor) while working on my original monitor. The only thing I found that was even close was setting the 2nd monitor up on it's on x server, which I don't want to do. Also, as it is now, I have my panel on my original monitor, but the windows do not see it when I have it aligned on the right (the windows don't adjust their size to account for the fact that it is there). I know a way I can do a work-around for this, but I would like to know if there is a "correct" way to do this. I know I can tell the movie player to show on all workspaces and have it on the 2nd monitor.

Monitor 2 is connect to dvi using a vga adaptor

I can't seem to get dual monitor to work?

From system settings -> monitor, i see 2 vid outputs one is DVI0, the other is VGA2. what's odd is i can set up different screen resolution for each monitor, but I only see one desktop, both monitors show the same desktop.

How do i get each monitor to show it's own desktop?

Ubuntu :: Dual Monitor - Now System Won't Start Up

Feb 9, 2010

I think I have caused a big problem with my laptop running Ubuntu 9.04, and I now can't get it to load up properly at all. It was when I was trying to change the screen resolution of my external monitor.

I'll try to recall exactly what I did...

I connected the external monitor and then turned the laptop on. The laptop worked fine, and the external monitor worked fine. The only problem was that the resolution on the external monitor was poor (it was the same resolution as on the laptop screen).

I went to system>preferences>Display

I removed the tick from mirror screens

Then I selected the external monitor and changed its resolution to the maximum setting. At this point a message popped up, but now I can't remember exactly what it said - I just clicked OK.

Both screens went all black, and I couldn't undo whatever I'd done.

I've now tried switching the computer off again and on again. If the external monitor is NOT connected when I switch the computer on then the laptop doesn't load up - I get the little Ubuntu symbol to start with, but then the screen just goes black.

If the external monitor IS connected then it takes me to the screen where I get to choose which OS to boot. If I boot normally then I see the ubuntu symbol and then it goes black. If I choose recovery mode then it does some recovery and then it takes me to a command line. So I can see all of my files.

Sometimes it does something different when I switch it on and an error message appears on the laptop screen. But the screen is so fuzzy that I can't see what it says. I click on OK (I guess it says OK...) and it takes me to another error message - but I can't seem to get any further.

So that's the problem. If anyone can help me I will be very grateful. I'm actually not that intested in getting the external monitor to work - it's much more important that I undo whatever change I've made so that the laptop works properly again.

I think the important thing is that I can get to the command line, so I should be able to make any necessary change there.

how to keep the mouse cursor in the wine window? Or does anyone know how to make full screen only use one monitor?

Ubuntu :: Dual Monitor Seperate X11 Sessions

Jun 12, 2010

I've got two monitors setup and it seems the only way to get separate gamma and brightness settings working on separate screens is through separate X sessions.

The problem though is after setting up and configuring Compiz the second monitor only displays the wallpaper and lets me move my mouse onto it i don't get any gnome panels nor do i get a menu if i right click on the desktop which suggests that gnome doesn't load on the other monitor at all or is out of bounds of the resolution.

It seemed to go like this during the configuring of Compiz as the right monitor windows and such seemed to crash then since then its just been the symptoms I described.

I'm including my Xorg.conf incase its of any use.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: X11 Segfault With Tri Monitor Dual Gpu

Jul 31, 2011

I have tried to setup a workstation with 3 monitors on two ati videocards, the goal being to span the desktop across all of them.

The process was not difficult at all, but after login X11 crashes and I am left with a console. I am fortunately able to login in safe mode, but I would like to ask for help in debugging this issue.

Here I will try to give as much detail as possible, starting with my system specifications:

Code:

The first card, the ATI Radeon HD 4650 is capable of running two monitors at the same time. The monitors, for all it matters, are three identical ACER P206HV 20" connected with their analog interface (due to missing cables which I will buy soon). Resolution 1600x900 each. My motherboard is an AsRock 870 Extreme3 mounting an AMD Athlon II X4 640 3 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM.

When asked by Ubuntu, I installed the ATI Caralyst driver version 11.6 and set it up for using Xinerama.

As I said, this setup works fine if I login in safe mode, but crashes X11 otherwise (even in classical mode - no Unity). By inspecting the logs (attached) I found this (notice the segfault)

Code:

As a test, I tryed to configure Catalyst without Xinerama, an this works, but of course I end up with two separate desktop, which is not what I want. In this mode, xrandr seems to work correctly

Code:

After some research I found that XRandR does not support desktop spanning over multiple GPUs, so Xinerama is the only way to go in my case. Since the two are not compatible with each other, after login in safe mode I see that XRandR is disabled

Code:

One more test consisted in disabling the XRandR module in the config files, as found in some posts: edits in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code:

configuring the ati driver:
