I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

This is frustrating, I just can't wipe out the HD on the Fedora 13 live CD.. When I open up Disk Utility, it says something about the resource being busy.. It seems that it's the swap partition, the live CD is using the swap partition, and I just can't wipe out the HD.On Ubuntu live CD, I can go to GParted, and tell the swap partition "Swap Off", but I can't seem to do that here.. I tried to add Gparted while in the Live session, but the Authentication button does nothing at all..
Is there a terminal command to turn off the swap partition so I can format the HD completely?(I'd also like to try and install without LVM, for my laptop it's just overkill and wastes HD space).

So I've recently scrapped togehter a computer to use for running openSUSE, and I've downloaded the Live CD, as well as the full DVD. Whenever I turn on the machine with either, I get the DISK BOOT FAILURE error. I've made sure that it boots first from CDROM drive, and verified all of hte wiring, but I can't see to get this to boot up. I've heard its possible it's just an issue that the motherboard doesn't want to run it, but are there other things to do to test it out?

I will be migrating SLES-10-SP2 operating system to new hard drives. I will be cloning most of the file systems. I had downloaded openSeSU-11-3-gnome Live CD and burned an ISO image. I want to install new drives in the PC and use the Live CD to create partitions to use in a RAID system. I have seen on the web that the Live CD can be used to install the OS on a machine but I did not see any option that just give the ability to use YAST to partition and create RAID system. Thus my question is how can I use the Live CD just to prepare the disk without installing the OS?

I would like to create a Suse 11.3 Live CD with Acronis on it so that I can boot from any computer, use Acronis, and still have some Linux commands available to me. Is this possible? I could part with OpenOffice.org to provide room for Acronis.
I currently have Acronis selectable in my grub menu, and it runs from my hard drive.

My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?

I downloaded a live KDE-CD and will install from that on hard disk. My box has 4 GB RAM so I understand I need a *-pae kernel ("Physical Address Extension") to be able to use the memory fully.
Can I install the kernel e.g. from [URL] via YAST, or does it need other libraries / software as well and so the system becomes unstable, would anybody know?

I am giving away a laptop with dual boot XP and Ubuntu. Partitions:
To erase all old files, I plan on burning an Ubuntu live CD and enter in the terminal:
And leave sda1 and sda4 untouched just in case the new owner wants to reinstall Windows in the future.
But how should I use the free 75GB ? Install Ubuntu on a 35GB extended partition and leave the remaining 40GB empty for XP, if wanted? Or should I use the entire 75GB for Ubuntu ?

when I attempt to scan anything with clamav from a terminal I get the following error:
ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 999 or GID 100
Which I take to mean that there are no virus definitions installed. I use the "freshclam" command. Which results in the following error:
ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

I am a new UBUNTU user. I had installed OS in my computer in the order of XP, Win 7, and finally UBUNTU.With EasyBCD, I managed multi-booting order of XP and Win7. That is, after choosing Win7 or UBUNTU from GRUB, (If I chose Win 7) I should choose XP or Win 7 to boot.
Using UBUNTU, I think that I do not need XP, so I formatted the hard disk where XP was installed. However, after deleting XP, I can not boot Win7 from GRUB, although there is still

Few months ago I had updated my OpenSuse 11.2 to new kernel but I broke it so never got to fix it. Now I've upgraded it to 11.3 and its working really well. Really happy with the KDE interface. Not missing Windows 7 at all (dual booting). I've got almost everything working and in fact got a lot more apps than Windows. For example 2 or 3 different versions of MSN Messenger!
I've got couple of minor issues. Firstly, my Logitech Webcam isn't getting detected by OpenSuse. When I open up the Cheese app it doesn't detect any cam.
Secondly, is there a Yahoo Messenger available for Linux? I've got some family/friends who use MSN and others Yahoo. I need webcam functionality in Yahoo Messenger.

I am a newbie to Linux. I am currently running Windows 7 and looking to have a dual boot system. I started by going through the Windows Control Panel to shrink the current partition. This left me with a 7.75 GB recovery partition, a 100 MB system partition, a 160 GB partition for Windows and 130 GB unallocated.
My question is (1) do I need to do anything with that 130 GB partition that is unallocated and (2) when I run the OpenSuse CD to install, how do I make sure it installs to that 130 GB partition?

In SLES 11 a freshly installed system when I try to get the man pages I get a weird error. /usr/bin/nroff: Can't create temp directory, exiting...
I know this error is just confusing because mktemp work just fine.
I read around by googling but I can only find people relating the problem without any solution.
I found this post which is cute, but I dont want to set my LD_LIBRARY_PATH has it is just a bad patch to solving the real issue.
