May 12, 2011

I am converting over to linux ubuntu 11.04, and I have used it for a week, love it. I installed an old 30gb HDD in order to install it ubuntu to try it out. Now I want to erase my primary windows XP drive and reformat to ext4, just like linux. Is there any prog or method that will make a perfect copy of what I have on my current drive ubuntu and put it on the newly formatted drive primary, so that it can boot ubuntu will all of the stuff I have on it right now?

Ubuntu :: Install 10.04 To A 16 Gig Thumb Drive And The Installation Went Perfectly?

Apr 8, 2011

I tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to a 16 gig thumb drive and the installation went perfectly. However, when I removed the thumb drive and tried to boot the computer back into windows I saw that the installer had installed GRUB on to the hard drive of the computer. Windows runs fine, but it wont start with out the thumb drive that has the ubuntu install on it, this is very bad for me. Is there a way I can remove GRUB with out messing up windows on the computer? i dont have a windows 7 boot disk so this operation would need to be done either in windows (already booted) or ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 X64 To A Laptop Harddrive Using A USB Drive?

Aug 15, 2010

I cannot find this usb-creator. I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 x64 to a laptop harddrive using a USB drive. I think this is what I need but I am not sure. I tried mounting an ISO of Ubuntu, but did not find usb-creator. I tried some "sudo apt-get install usb-creator" command (cannot remember exact syntax, but the install succeeded) but I cannot find the installed application. If this is indeed the utility that I need, where do I find it?

Yes my motherboard has UEFI.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Live Iso From Portable Harddrive

Mar 11, 2009

I'm making life difficult for myself. Summary, I have a laptop with F10 installed on a portable harddrive (sdb 1-3, i.e., no logical volume) Works great, no complaints so I guess this reduces to a grub question; how do I edit grub.conf to boot an iso on sdb4? Fedora10.iso for example.

General :: Can't Just Copy A Bootable CD To USB Drive And Boot From It

Aug 15, 2011

I would like to understand the following:

I have a Debian installation CD that I can boot from. Now I copied that to an USB-stick using dd

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sdc bs=1M

The CD-image should contain a boot-sector and everything else that is needed for booting, yet the USB stick does not boot.

What am I missing - why does the stick not boot?

PS: I am not interested in tips on how to create a bootable stick, I only want to understand why the above method does not work.

Ubuntu Installation :: 3d Works Perfectly, But Not Compiz?

May 6, 2011

I've ditched ubuntu for xubuntu 11.04. I love it. The marvellous grid based desktop...the beautiful theme...the ease of customisation...everything. I switched because I didn't like unity. However, I now have a problem. After installing the proprietary ati drivers for my raedon 5xxx card, compz still does not work at all. A lot of other people have been having problems with extreme lag when dragging windows (my unity-likeing school friend included). I don't have this problem because compiz won't work. The weird thing is that in any other 3d tasks the card performs better than on 10.10. For example I can now play oblivion without the characters lacking faces.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Does Not See Perfectly Working Partitions

Sep 3, 2010

I have two hard disks, the one that I work with and another one for backups. The main HD had an OS (Ubuntu) partition, a partition for /home and a lot of free space.I installed latest Mandriva creating a new partition. Everything OK. But it overwrote GRUB and I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, so I reinstalled GRUB from the Ubuntu live CD. I got my Ubuntu back, but then it wouldn't boot into Mandriva. Well, I didn't care. But now the problem comes.

Right now, if I try to install Ubuntu from live CD, the installer won't see the partitions in my main drive. It sees the partitions in the backup drive, but the main drive appears as empty, no Ubuntu, no Mandriva, and no /home. Debian testing installer did just the same. Those partitions are there and I can boot into them and see them; it's only the installer that does not see them.

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiling Pymol 1.4.1 Fails In 11.04 Runs Perfectly In 10.10

I like to keep my pymol molecular viewer as recent as possible. With svn and compiling it used to be easy, up until ubuntu natty. Now I get the following error every time I try to compile:

Please submit a full bug report,

error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1

This is for EVERY version I have tried. I have even downloaded the source code you can find in the ubuntu repositories (current version for 64 bit is pymol 1.2r2) and tried to compile that one, just as prove of concept. I still get the same error. I think I might need something else beyond what I have already, because if the package maintainers could build the older version for natty, I should be too, with the proper packages, shouldn't I?

Installation :: Unable To Install Nvidia Driver After Using Dd To Copy Drive?

Sep 25, 2009

I was recently able to obtain a new laptop at work. Rather than reinstalling the OS, reconfiguring all of the software, and then copying over all of my data from my old laptop -- I decided to try to use dd to clone my drive. It worked pretty darn well (thanks Saikee!). However, I have two problems that I have noticed so far:

1) The system does not seem to offer me the option to install the proprietary nvidia driver. I was able to manually install the nvidia-glx-180 package and then edit xorg.conf appropriately and I'm running with the nvidia driver now. So this problem is resolved (though I still find it odd it didn't even offer my the "restricted hardware drivers" option in System -> Administration).

2) Wireless is not working. I checked dmesg and it doesn't seem to have any errors in it. Here is a list of things I have checked/found which I think might be relevant:

- Oddly enough it seems that my wired device always gets renamed from eth0 to eth1, and my wireless device gets renamed from wlan0 to wlan1. I'm not sure why (though I would prefer them to be eth0 and wlan0).

- dmesg output looks good shows some message about the wlan1 link not being ready

Code:

bmayes@bdmlin:~$ dmesg | grep wlan
[ 10.915831] udev: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlan1
[ 185.179556] bridge-wlan0: peer interface wlan0 not found, will wait for it to come up

Ubuntu Installation :: Forced To Use Flash Drive As Boot Drive

Jun 11, 2011

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.

I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.

Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

Here's what I got:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS880 Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems Device 9602
00:06.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 2)

Ubuntu :: Copying Dual-Boot Win7 Harddrive ?

Sep 19, 2010

My brother has been a long time Linux fan, and has been getting on me forever to dual-boot my computer with Linux. So I finally got around to it and dual-booted it with a partition, and it works just fine, problem is all my stuff is on the Windows 7 partition of the hard-drive. I hear the big Linux feature is being able to take everything from the Windows side of the computer and transferring it over to the Linux side...

My only question is, where would I find that feature? I browsed around the administration system capabilities but couldn't find anything related to the partition, so I could use a little guidance in finding the feature, or whether I need to download a program to use it.
