I accidentally formatted my internal HDD and unmounted it and now my computer won't detect it as a bootable device. I have a system recovery disc but it doesn't seem to be making any difference. Also I do not have my windows 7 installation disc nor can I write discs.
Is there a way I can fix this and keep all of my important files?
Since puppy installs in ram, unstead of on harddrive, does that mean you could not use that computer as a dual boot one? I mean won't puppy always be wanting to run on boot up, since it's not on a seperate partitian ?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently deleted winxp from my com and and decided to do a clean install of ubuntu. so i set the boot sequence and hdd boot importance to my flash drive with the ubuntu setup and folders in the usb. there are the apps for mounting the files on the it also from when i used it before using the linux universal usb installer, which worked before on my current com. but cmos cant boot from the drive and says error. is the usb installer at fault? and if not how do i install ubuntu on the formatted com?

On entering Ubuntu, I stuck the USB flash drive in and realized that the bookmarks never got copied. I've lost them. I have to have those bookmarks. What would be the best way to get them back?
i just got fedora 13 from the dvd 64 bit and when i looked at how much space it took up in computer in it said i only had 43 gigs left out of a 610 gig hard drive then i go to my home folder it says 504 gigs of free space but then i look at my system monitor it said i had 547 gigs is this a bug.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it was possible to put something like a linux image on to a hard drive to install the OS on first boot. The reason I want to do this is because of the following reasons. First, I broke the IDE port on the mobo so I can't use the internal DVD drives on the computer.
Second, I don't have an extra SATA DVD drive lying around. Third, for some reason, this computer will boot from a USB DVD drive but once it starts loading the kernel, it just stops calling the drive and the computer freezes. I tested the disc and the drive with another computer and it works fine.And forth, the computer refuses to boot from a USB flash drive with linux on it. So as you can see, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I would love to be able to hook the hard drive up to another computer and put the required files on the it for it to boot up to an installation.
i've worked with Linux for a while now, but never in a double boot kind of way (except using wubi), and i'm still kind of a newby.i have 2 harddrivesfirst one has only 1 partition; Windows XPsecond one has 1 empty partition, simple storageand another partition where i installed fedora core, and GRUB is also located on this harddrive.I changed harddrive priority to my second harddrive, result:GRUB comes up, no problem, but when I try to boot windows, it tells mentldr is missing ctrl alt del to continueso i changed the harddisk priority back to the way it was, where the first drive containing windows is first priority... but then, no GRUB.i've tried editing the grub conf,i've tried fixboot/fixmbrtl;dr:no ntdlr when linux harddrive is main priorityno grub when windows harddrive is main priority

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brother has been a long time Linux fan, and has been getting on me forever to dual-boot my computer with Linux. So I finally got around to it and dual-booted it with a partition, and it works just fine, problem is all my stuff is on the Windows 7 partition of the hard-drive. I hear the big Linux feature is being able to take everything from the Windows side of the computer and transferring it over to the Linux side...
My only question is, where would I find that feature? I browsed around the administration system capabilities but couldn't find anything related to the partition, so I could use a little guidance in finding the feature, or whether I need to download a program to use it.
I decided to tk tha plunge with ubuntu !
For this I repartitioned my harddrive (erasin org windows) into 3 drives. :

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.

Now I want to erase my primary windows XP drive and reformat to ext4, just like linux. I am trying to boot up linux on a SATA drive. The SATA drive already had some other linux. I 'fdisk' the SATA drive and cleared all partitions. Now tried to CD boot with linux, it copied over to the SATA drive, however, when i tried to boot from harddrive, it gave me a GRUB Error 22. Why does this happen ? Shouldnt the linux have created its own partition ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to read out a friend's windows hard drive, so I took the IDE connection from my CD drive and plugged it into the hard drive.
Now at boot time at the stage where it usually checks all partitions, linux complains about "zero length partition of that harddrive" and then stops giving me an emergency login.
Maybe that hard drive is actually faulty, even though I see all partitions correctly in windows. What can I do to make linux stop checking it? Is there a boot time option?
I suppose later I can manually mount a /dev/sdb or so device. I just have to figure out which

When I tried to boot the drive, grub rescue mode told me file not found. I installed again and used the default partition table and got the same error. I gave up and tried to boot my fedora 13 internal hdd but was told that there was no such device. I looked through these forums and ran a bootloader script and was told that my internal hdd had a bootloader but my external didn't. I tried to load the kernel through grub rescue, but the file system was unknown to grub. The files are still on my internal drive and I don't want to reinstall just to boot it.

I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?

In an attempt to fix this problem, I tried using the following sudo command:
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sda5 does not exist, I tried 4, then 3, then 2, and it worked, but that was a partition of my internal HD containing windows 7.
I also typed in:
sudo grub-install --root directory=/mnt /dev/sda
not I get the following error when I try to boot from my internal HD:
error: no such device: 57288a24-5d12-4fb1-b27e-eb09a1f9b7c6. grub rescue>
Is there a way to get grub to boot into windows 7 again?

Eventually I would like to fix the error I get when I boot from the external, I would like to to boot to ubuntu, but for now I am concerned with getting my internal HD to boot windows 7. Where I originally found the terminal commands to begin with. I think sda5 is where linux was installed in the example I found, and didn't realize it.
I would like to triple boot vista, opensuse and ubuntu.
I need to set aside 165 gb for Vista (which has been backed up to an external drive).
Would like to make a fresh install of Ububtu and Opensuse with Ubunto being the main OS. I figured 100 GB for Ubuntu and 55 GB for Opensuse would probably be fine (the remainder I need to set aside for Vista).
Ive popped in the Ubuntu DVD and am about to install it but am stuck on the "allocate drive space" part. I do not understand how to partition the hd and what to set each partition to in the "Use as" and "Mount Point"
Here is a thought experiment:
1. Copy vmlinuz and initrd.img from isolinux subdir into /boot
2. Adjust grub.conf to boot to that kernel
3. Reboot to setup
4. Format /boot (actually '/' ) during "fresh install"
5. Proceed with the installation-over-network
I see two possible outcomes:
1. The setup fails to reformat the drive, because it is "in use" by boot kernel
2. The partition is not "in use" and the installation succeeds
Why? Old cluster with broken CD-drives, lacking USB, and no separate /boot partition.
