Red Hat / Fedora :: Chmod - Give A Mounted Folder /mnt/folder Access
Oct 28, 2010
I want to give a mounted folder /mnt/folder access so that 'root and the group test have read write access' and all other users have read access I understand most of the chmod command, the users groups world etc but where in the 'command' do you specify which 'group' or 'user' you are giving the read / write access to? in all the tutorials i've seen no where do you specify the actual group or user.

I have a project stored on a university server which I'd like to be able to work on from home.
I already have an SFTP folder set up, which I can access easily in Nautilus, and I can freely copy files back and forth, or open them in e.g. gedit.
However, the project is in Matlab, and I cannot see the mounted SFTP folder from within Matlab. This means that I can't work on the project in Matlab without copying the whole lot across to my local machine when I want to work on it.
Is there some way I can get Matlab to "see" the connection so that I can use the mounted SFTP folder like any other in my filesystem? It appears on my desktop when connected - does it have some other mount location?

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

i was trying to make a script to redo a chmod on a folder every 15min. by using crontab (*/15 * * * * /(link to script.sh)
now i didn't know much about the use of the scrips so i just write in the command i would in terminal chmod -R 664 /data/
i try to run the script in terminal and now i can't see the files in that folder. but acording to the folder properties, i am still using the disc space where the data use to be, so the data in the folder doesn't seem to be deleted.
the main focus i want is how to get the data back. scripting and others can come later.
how can i get to see my data again?

I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.

Just finished downloading a game in .run format, i downloaded it to my Home>Downloads folder and ran these commands in terminal: (game is tremulous if it matters)
chmod +x tremulous.run
./tremulous.run
It started it up in the terminal and i began working my way through the installation process, and i tried to install it into my Home>Games folder. (Is it supposed to be home>games or your username>games?)
and it said PERMISSION DENIED. No write permission to Home/Games/
How do i give myself read and write permissions to my game folder?

Installed Fedora 10 on my Downloader (just a name for the pc as its mainly used for torrent downloading) computer. But I cant access the fedora shared folder from my windows XP. Accessing XP shared folders from F10 is fine. I have another 2 computer where I have installed Ubuntu 8.10. I have no problem accessing either of the Ubuntu system from my XP computer. The F10 computer comes up fine on my Workgroup list of xp. I double click to go into the F10, a login window pops up and askes for username and password. I used the normal username and root / password to log in. But it keeps popping up for password again and again. BTW, Recently I Installed Win7 Beta on the Windows computer and Surprisingly I can access the Fedora 10 computer shared folder just fine from Win7. But I need to get it working under windows XP.
Here is my smb.conf file
Code:
# Global Settings
[global]
# Network Related Options
# workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name, e.g.: MIDEARTH
# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field netbios name can be used to specify a server name not tied to the hostname. Interfaces lets you configure Samba to use multiple interfaces. If you have multiple network interfaces then you can list the ones. You want to listen on (never omit localhost). Hosts Allow/Hosts Deny lets you restrict who can connect, and you can specify it as a per share option as well
workgroup = THEMATRIX
server string = Samba Server Version %v
netbios name = MYSERVER
;interfaces = lo eth0 192.168.12.2/24 192.168.13.2/24
;hosts allow = 127. 192.168.12. 192.168.13 .....

I've installed Fedora 12 on my laptop and when I share any folder and try to access it over the network using smb://<ip-address/<folder> it says "file or folder smb://..... does not exist"
Now if I simply try to access - smb://<ip-address> on the file browser it shows me shared folders but when I double click I get the same error.
I've SELinux disable, Firewall disable but I'm still not able to access these folders.
I did the exactly same samba configuration on openSUSE and I'm able to access the folder but not with Fedora 12.

Derived from http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=254080
After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?

We have an Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d in our office. for past two days the shared public folder is not getting mounted. but it's working fine through the web interface i.e user can upload/download.that rules out the permissions problems.
I am providing the output of mount command:
t227@t227:/var/log$ sudo mount -t cifs --verbose //192.100.100.37/public /mnt/public/ -o username=shrey
[sudo] password for t227:
Password:

in fact i can't access any of the folder which I am having permissions to rw.but it's working fine through the web interface.
P.S:- On windows also I can't mount the folder.

When booting opensuse 11.2 or 11.3 there is automatically created a folder in /media to mount my external usb drive (in /media/disk). The problem I have is that sometimes these folders are not automatically removed when I shut down. On the next time boot this device is mounted at /media/disk-1 or /media/disk-2 which throws off for instance Krusader or Amarok. Also the folders that are not removed seem to have really strong permissions such that I can't even browse into them in Krusader or Dolphin. I have to manually clean the /media folder as super user so that when I reboot, they are in /media/disk. Does anyone know how to ensure that opensuse removes the folder(s) upon shutdown?
