After updating ubuntu 10.04 a few days back, I get a black screen at startup without a flashing cursor or anything. I'm kind of new to ubuntu but not completely.
System specs:
Processor: q6600
Graphicscard: xfx nvidia gforce 9800gtx+
Motherboard:asus p5ql pro
2 HD's 320gb and 250gb
I'm dual booting with windows 7.
For every one who upgraded to 11.04 and got a black screen while booting up. i have found a work around to possibly fix and back up your files
my setup:
gateway NV78
ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10)

M220MV (used as a second monitor)
all i did was reboot my laptop with a second monitor attached to it so the video output would be displayed on the tv instead of my laptop.
I have just "finished" updating my Ubuntu 9.10. (somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).

It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug
I am running ubuntu 10.4, windows 7, and I had ubuntu 10.10 on a single hard drive. I upgrade the 10.10 system to 11.4 and now my grub menu which is on the 10.4 system shows two windows and two 11.4 installations.
How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.

I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.
I used "Startup Disk Creator" to make a bootabel USB drive with 11.04. I followed the guide #2 from (I use 10.04). Everything went fine while making this. I re-booted and selected this USB and selected the "Try it" button. I looked at how 11.04 looks like for about 10 seconds and did not do anything and re-booted.Now there is onlyblack screen with absolutely no text and there is nothing I can do [URL]
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 has had an abrupt power shutoff (actually several times -- my battery has some problems).
Now when Ubuntu boots, I get the startup screen, but after a few seconds, the screen goes black. I can still boot from the live CD and in fact I am using my computer from the CD to write this post.
A few more details: When I press the power button while my computer is in this "blank" state, I get hard drive activity. Also, if I press "power", and then "enter", the machine actually shuts down.power
HP laptop with Intel graphicsunning Slackware current with a 2.6.38.7-smp kernel.Booting with the "nomodeset" kernel parm works but X gets stuck with a 1024x768 resolution. When booting without, the screen goes black after a few pages scroll by, just at the point where the console switches to a higher resolution. Changing to a different console didn't help, so I blindly log on and type startx, and the screen comes back to life with KDE running at the higher 1366x768 resolution, I try a few apps, the webcam, suspend to RAM, resume, and everything is now working flawlessly so it doesn't look like an X issue.At this point I can change to another console (or exit KDE altogether) and the screen is back on at the higher resolution. Looking at the X log and some dmesg output makes it seem that starting X possibly replaces, reloads or unloads a driver? I'm having problems with the screen going black on startup in 10.10. It appears to go completely off (no backlight or anything). If I press ctri+alt+f1 I get a terminal, then I can ctrl+alt+f7 and the desktop appears. I have tried setting the mode to the correct resolution in xorg.conf and I tried using the vesa driver, but it still doesn't work. My graphics card shows as sis 661/741/760
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm doing a dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 on my Asus UL80v. When I restart and keep going into Ubuntu I'm fine, but I think if I go to Windows and then restart, the infinite start up happens, and I'm currently stuck in this. It'll go to the OEM screen, then a black screen with a cursor, then it goes black, and then back to the OEM screen and so on and so forth.
Luckily I have Ubuntu 10 on my flash drive, so I'm booting to that while I try to figure out this. Which reminds me, when I use the flash drive, there's an option to boot to local disk which also does not work, if that's worth anything. Before this happened, I ran check disk on windows because I ran into some partition troubles. There seemed to be no problems, and I can still access the drives from this flash Ubuntu.
I'm having a problem with a server I just got. The first thing I did when I got it was to format the drive and install ubuntu server, but on booting up I got a black screen and my monitor (samsung syncmaster914v) displayed a bouncing notification with the text "not optimum mode recommended mode: 1280 x 1024 60hz". However at one by using a combination of plugging in the monitor after booting, and pressing random keys on the keyboard I was albe to boot into the server, and was able to access the monitor meu, which told me it was running at 640x480, and 60 hertz. having access to the console I stupidly tried changing the resolution and then rebooted, getting the same black screen.

1) Frozen screen after a while working with the system. Cursor moves, but frozen
2) Black screen at startup.
Retyping this message again on my Mac Laptop as Ubuntu froze again. I took the following action: Followed directions as listed here [URL]
1. Select recovery mode from the boot menu.
2. Select login as root from the menu in recovery mode.
3. Type this at the prompt
# sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
4. Exit
# exit
5. Now select Resume normal boot from the menu.
Every thing should be OK by now. This seemed to work, but after another reboot, black screen again. System Specs: [URL]. Running with 1 GB of Memory and 320Gb Hard Disk /w 2Gb Swap and 318 Gb Extended.
I have Windows XP & Fedora 14 on separate hard drives.seem to see POST upon startup. Same for Windows or Linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
have a problem with an Acer Aspire one running linpus linux. I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer at startup. I don't know how this happened. 4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,

ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

another post about this. I just don't know how to handle this, as I'm pretty nsee the grub loading menu, but screen just freezes after, no way I can reboot, or open a console. I can use the new purple-backgrounded GRUB to boot into an older version of ubuntu, which is what I'm using at the moment to write this message.
The first time I booted into the upgraded version I got my background wallpaper but no other interface elements. I rebooted and now whenever ubuntu boots everything looks normal until I end up with a black screen and a white mouse pointer. As I move the pointer around it changes to a cursor so it is definitely interacting with the interface, I just can't see it. I can bring up terminal windows too.I have a Dell M65 w/ 4GB RAM. I suspect that the problem may be related to the NVIDIA video card; I'm using "version current" of the NVIDIA driver - might uninstalling this fix the problem?
Ok, so I just finished correcting my driver issue with my wireless card when I'm struck with another problem....after gaining access to the net and updating my packages, ubuntu fails to boot up. It freezes at the boot screen where it runs the 5 orange dots with the ubuntu logo.

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.
I have spent the better part of 2 days perusing these forums for assistance. Here is the short story:I run a 7 year old custom build with a 82865G Intel Chipset and a NVIDIA FX5200 graphics card. Had been running a sluggish XP and after adding 2GB of fresh RAM wished to start fresh with my old friend, Ubuntu.
I've tried 10.04 LTS with and without my NVIDIA card installed with no luck. I have successfully installed 10.04 using the alternate install, but this also goes to black. I can hold shift to see GRUB and play around there, but no luck so far. I've also tried 9.10 but have not gotten past the pulsing Ubuntu image. I've seen plenty of support for NVDIA and Intel onboard graphics chips suggesting boot commands like nomodeset and i9015.modeset=0/1...it's all falling short.
I'm heavily leaning towards just installing an earlier LTS or a different linux distro all together. If there no one can help me debug, maybe someone can suggest a distro that will make me happy.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04 onto my Dell Latitude e6510 (through the wubi installer), but I can't get anything except a black screen. I'm pretty new to ubuntu, but after a bit of looking around at graphics issues I found a bunch of boot parameters and tried different combinations of them. i915.modeset=0 Gave me the purple loading screen, until the screen went black and I got flashing caps lock and scroll lock lights.xforcevesa gave me a completely black screen -- not receiving power at all
I also tried noapci, acpi=off, irqpoll, and pci=routeirq as parameters. None of those had any success.I've also tried letting ubuntu boot with a black screen until I heard the African drums and pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go into the console, but the screen stayed black then as well.
I have downloaded Last version of Ubuntu 11.04 and installed it. The installation went correctly with some flickering in display during installation. But the real problem starts after installation, when I turn on my PC and select Ubuntu from GRUB, the screen flickered a lot and then went black and PC got hanged.
