Ubuntu Installation :: Adding Another Hdd With XP Pre-installed
Jan 7, 2011
I have a 500Gb HDD which currently has only Ubuntu 10.04LTS installed on it. I also have another 80Gb drive with a fresh copy of XP on it (which isn't currently connected to the motherboard). Both drives will connect via sata leads (currently I have only one sata lead and that is being used exclusively by Ubuntu), I'm buying another sata lead tomorrow for the XP drive.
When I finally connect both drives up to the motherboard, and boot, will the grub menu automatically see the XP drive (as well as Ubuntu) and ask which OS I wish to boot to? Or, will I have to somehow inform grub that XP is also an option now?

I recently installed Windows 7 on Virtual Box (running within Ubuntu Karmic 9.10), and it runs great. However I want to also add Windows 7 to the Grub Menu, so I can choose at the start between the Ever-Glorious Ubuntu and the Depressingly-Drab Windows 7.

I've started using uck. I have around 100 packages installed on my system right now and when I use uck package manager and click on the required package to install. It starts downloading it. I already have all the packages downloaded and installed on my system. How can I add them to the live cd using the ubuntu customization kit?

I'm trying to get a second drive configured. I wasnt to use this to store pictures movie s, and have the ability to share them across the network.
Main drive is SATA 80 Gig New Second drive SATA 1 Tb I can see both drives in the bios, They show up in g parted I've formatted and partitioned the drive and and every time I try to create a folder or share in SAMBA it tells me the I'm not the owner. I thought I could install the second drive and then partition the drive and I would be good to go like windows this was not the case.

I'm having trouble getting GRUB2 to pick it up in the boot menu. to clarify: Does every OS need a copy of grub? My impression was that you have one copy, and it takes care of all the OSes you have. I got to the point in my Gentoo install where it asked me to install grub, but I didn't want to mess up my boot record or anything (which there is the potential for as I'm in unfamiliar territory). I switched over to ubuntu and tried

I've using win7 and 9.10 for a few months now. Today I decided to install yet another OS, but during installation a new grub was written to the mbr. Result: I can no longer boot Ubuntu. This is what my menu.lst looks like
Quote:
timeout 10
color black/cyan yellow/cyan
gfxmenu (hd0,4)/boot/gfxmenu
default 0
[code]....
I can see and mount my 9.10 partition just fine from the new OS, it's located on dev/sda6.And I'd still very much like to keep using Ubuntu. So, how do I go about editing this file to make it work?

I'm trying to add mandriva to grub2 and have difficulties..
Mandriva has it own boot partition on sda1 (ext3) Ubuntu boots in /boot on ubuntu's / partition which is sdb6
Mandriva / partition is: sda5 (ext4)
UUID for Mandriva boot partition is: bf53ebd1-4698-4522-ae0d-f9465aa2f0a3 (sda1)
UUID for Mandriva / is: 658bcd3e-9c69-49c9-8da1-a7e0b9723547 (sda5)
UUID for Mandriva swap is: d3bc2559-4f86-4269-bf25-c99e726c8775 (sda7)
Ive made a file which I have put in /etc/grub.d/ so each time I run update-grub2 it also includes this script.
Code:
echo "Adding Mandriva 2010.1" >&2
cat << EOF
menuentry "Mandrivas 2010.1, linux 2.6.33.3" {
[code]....
It gives error kernel panic, and something with initrd beeing shut down before completion

I'm running low on disk space on my 10.04 server install. I'm running my normal partitioning without any lvm.
Is there a way I can create a new lvm set from my /home which is almost full and a new hdd to expand space just on that partition without killing everything on it?

I'm customizing a 10.04 Netbook Edition ISO for my school. Basically, I need an image which will have all the applications/programs that I need pre-installed so that when I install Ubuntu on the Comp, the programs will install automatically too.
Is there anyway to do this without touching the terminal? Is there any program/application with a GUI designed for this task? (Though, if the only way to do it is via terminal, I will try it since I know basic knowledge of the terminal)
Also, if this is not possible, is there any way to include the repositories or dependencies needed for the programs to install inside the installation disc/image?
PS. The computers where we will be installing Ubuntu will NOT have an Internet connection so it is a must that all programs/applications are pre-installed with the OS or that all the necessary dependencies or repositories are already included so the programs can be installed without downloading anything.

I have an external hard drive (500GB) that I partitioned and would like to use the second partition to add extra storage space on the computer running 10.04 server (100 GB HD). /dev/sdc2 is the partition I would like to add via LVM to the 100GB HD; dev/sdc1 contains data I already use.
Code:
root@SERVER1:# blkid
/dev/sda1: UUID="3fbfabe1-7173-4f83-9c9d-08effabd0a25" TYPE="ext2"
/dev/sda5: UUID="Wq94xh-ZDhl-XG0Q-X4Ic-AxUZ-A6Hr-TQTZYx" TYPE="LVM2_member"

A local store built a brand new dual core system for me about a month ago with a 1TB drive and installed Karmic on the entire drive. I now have a piece of external hardware that requires XP and simply will not work in XP in Virtualbox. I have purchased another 1TB drive, and my thinking is to create an XP partition of about 2-300GB and leave the rest of the drive for another Karmic partition and dual-boot. I don't care which drive is primary (unless there is a reason I should).
I was thinking of unplugging the karmic drive and putting the new drive in it, installing XP on it, then adding the Karmic drive back to the system and editing one of the boot files to add the other operating system.
If so, which boot file should I edit? Which drive should be primary? Or, is there a better, easier way to do this?

I've followed the guide here for installing MATLAB. The installation completed successfully, however, the launcher created doesn't launch MATLAB as MATLAB isn't installed anywhere pointed to by $PATH. What's the best way of solving this - adding MATLAB's directory to $PATH (in which case how do I go about doing so), or (re)installing MATLAB to somewhere already in $PATH?

I was just trying to add new ssh users for tonight session and really messed up badly. I first installed package ibsh (iron-bars shell). I didn't know how to use it so I just went to a new user account and added ibsh at the end of his .profile. (I wrote
Code:
sudo gedit /home/username/.profile
which I suspect is the problem, I should have written
Code:
gksu gedit /home/username/.profile
??)
Well graphical logging became impossible in my own account until I did the following in my own account:
Code:
chmod 777 .profile
chmod 777 .ICEauthority
But desktop is still empty. I have restarted the system. I cannot use Firefox (it works without output for 10 sec and then dies). Chromium says something like "Problems due to not being able to update profile" but works. (I cannot see any files on desktop. But if I do places > desktop I can see them.) All the mentioned files had -------- for permissions so I did:
Code:
chmod 777 ~/Desktop/*
How to get my system back to normal. I think I got botched up permissions. If I create new user accounts, I get several error messages in these accounts.

I just switched to ubuntu and i love it!! The installation went flawless but i had a second hard drive while i had windows vista to store all of my media, i.e. mp3 and pictures. Am i able to access the stored information on the second hard drive in ubuntu? Will i need to delete the partition in order to use the second hard drive for future use? The second hard drive shows up in the disk utility application, but not in the computer/file browser section. The file system for the second hard drive is hpfs/ntfs.

I have ubuntu and a Texet USB Wireless adaptor. I have a CD with Linux Drivers and I am supposed to be able to copy the folder into libfirmware. Although I am an administrator and have added myself to the group root, I still can't do it, as it says I don't have permissions. I am thinking of trying to use CHMOD once i've read the manual, but wonderd if there's an easier way? The software source and Synaptic Package manager can't help me. Is it as simple as using CHMOD, or is there an easier/harder way?

I installed Win7 on a 2-disk RAID0 fakeraid. I then unplugged those drives and installed linux mint on a separate drive. I did it this way because if I left the drives plugged in, linux would jack up the fakeraid for those drives and make windows upbootable, and installing linux to the fakeraid itself is just too much of a PITA. So basically, this is the disk configuration, and there's no chance of me changing it.
Right now, I can boot into either win7 or mint by pressing F12 for the boot menu, and then selecting the drive the os is installed on. It would be nice if I could just add an entry to the grub menu for win7. I've used the menu.lst file before, but apparently all that has changed with grub2. I've checked out some of the grub2 docs and poked around in /etc/grub.d, but frankly, it seems to be orders of magnitude more complicated than it should be.

This is no huge problem, but it is rather annoying to me. I am using the 10.4 beta, and whenever I get a large update (like a updated kernel) GRUB adds another boot option to the menu (I'm dual booting Vista and Ubuntu.) So my GRUB menu looks something like this when I turn my computer on:
GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu2
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic (recovery mode)
