Ubuntu Installation :: Adding Gentoo To A Machine With (9.10) And XP (SP3)
Apr 8, 2010
I'm having trouble getting GRUB2 to pick it up in the boot menu. to clarify: Does every OS need a copy of grub? My impression was that you have one copy, and it takes care of all the OSes you have. I got to the point in my Gentoo install where it asked me to install grub, but I didn't want to mess up my boot record or anything (which there is the potential for as I'm in unfamiliar territory). I switched over to ubuntu and tried

I'm trying to install Gentoo on a virtual machine (VirtualBox installed on my debian squeeze).
My connexion at home is veeery slow, so I wanted to do it at work (don't judge me!), the thing is I' behinf a proxy.
I tried the command
Code:
export http_proxy="proxy:port"
but couldn't ping anything. On the other hand, when i use
Code:
links www.google.com -http-proxy host:port
that works...
So i was able to download the stage3 file and start preparing the system, but I have some troubles when it comes to use the provided tools (the tool to add a mirror can't retrieve the list for example, and I guess I could not emerge anything either)

How do I reconfigure grub when adding a disk to a machine where both disks have their own MBRs? I have two volumes:Disk 1 - actually mirrored RAID-1 drives managed by ICH9R on the motherboard Disk 2 - a single drive managed by ICH9R on the motherboard, but without RAID. Disk 1 is the "old" disk containing WinXP on the first partition. The MBR of Disk 1 was created by Windows. Disk 2 was built on the machine while Disk1 was unplugged. Disk2 has Win7 on /dev/sda1 and Fedora 12 on /dev/sda7. Obviously, Disk 2 has grub installed on its own MBR.
When I plug-in both Disk 1 and Disk 2 at the same time, I would like to reconfigure grub so that it gives me the option to switch between WinXP on Disk 1, Fedora on Disk 2 and Win7 on Disk 2. (I may also want to install Ubuntu on another partition of Disk 1, but that's a separate issue.) The problem is that when I plug in Disk 1, Disk 1 becomes /dev/dm-0 and Disk 2 becomes /dev/sdc (instead of /dev/sda as when I installed it). (I don't think I can switch this order because I'm worried that Windows will become confused.) So, how do I keep all partitions the same and get them all to work from grub? On which MBR will I need to install grub? How do I configure it to see all 3-4 of my operating systems? Do I fix grub from the Fedora LiveCD?

I'm just trying to migrate to Ubuntu 10 Beta from Gentoo. One option in the installer intrigued me. It said something like (from memory) "Use password to log in and decrypt my home directory".
What happens behind the scenes when I choose this? (How) can I enable this later on? (I didn't activate it because I wanted to migrate my Gentoo user's home as painless as possible.)

I've taken the plunge and embarked on my very first install/congifuration of Ubuntu. I've successfully installed 10.04 from the LiveCD onto a brand-new 500 GB hard drive. It boots fine. At least, it did until I reconnected another hard drive that contains a Gentoo system. (I had unplugged the Gentoo drive during the installation so as not risk mucking it up).In the presence of the Gentoo drive, the Ubuntu system starts to boot, but then fails with an a error that it's unable to mount /var.Investigation (df -k) indicates that it's mounted one of the parititions on the Gentoo drive. If I unplug the Gentoo hard drive, the Ubuntu system agains boots properly.
I have no idea why the 10.04 system even sees the other drive, much less mounts one of its partitions. My intent, once migrating to Ubuntu, was to copy needed user files and data from the old Gentoo system, then repartition the drive and use it for additional Ubuntu storage. Seems I can't get there from here.Is there some feature in Ubuntu that causes it to go looking for any other drives accessible on a system and then go about mounting random partitions?

I am working on a light version of linux for no particular reason other than to see how small I could make it. I was wondering if INIT was necessary, or if I could perform all of the INIT-related tasks (fsck, unmounting, etc) by hand/bash scripts?
I do not need multi-user functionality (Or much of anything for that matter). I started off with a Gentoo base 2.0.2 Install with kernel 2.6.38.

I've partially installed Gentoo to a separate (RAID0) partition and would like to boot it from my Ubuntu 10.04 Grub installation. I have a /boot on RAID1 (mirror) and Ubuntu root on RAID1 (stripe set.) I have added what I could figure out to
Code:
hbarta@olive:~$ cat /etc/grub.d/40_custom
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
[code]....
And it starts to boot the Gentoo kernel. (That fails when it cannot find the root partition, but I think that is past the point where grub has done it's work.) what I have wrong in the Gentoo menuentry that causes it not to show up?

I am building gentoo through a fully installed Ubuntu system. My swap partition is in use by the Ubuntu system so when I use the mkswap command I get that the partition is already in use. I expected this but I was wondering if postponing the mount of swap until after I have booted into the gentoo system would cause any problems. Am I going to have to edit a bunch of files if I mount my swap later?? Also, I didn't see any manuals mentioning building a gentoo system from a fully installed system, is that going to cause any problems? This is my first gentoo installation, so I'm not really experienced with gentoo. I didn't think that building from a full install would be any different than a live cd other than more resources are already in use. I'm not actually having problems with install. I just want to make sure I wont.

It complains about not finding the /lib/modules/2.6.24-9-pve/modules.dep file, but the /lib/modules directory doesn't even exist on this machine.
Does anyone know how to get it to work?

I've got a Gentoo box that I'm interested in switching over to an Ubuntu box.
I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1].
Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep.
Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data.

I have a 500Gb HDD which currently has only Ubuntu 10.04LTS installed on it. I also have another 80Gb drive with a fresh copy of XP on it (which isn't currently connected to the motherboard). Both drives will connect via sata leads (currently I have only one sata lead and that is being used exclusively by Ubuntu), I'm buying another sata lead tomorrow for the XP drive.
When I finally connect both drives up to the motherboard, and boot, will the grub menu automatically see the XP drive (as well as Ubuntu) and ask which OS I wish to boot to? Or, will I have to somehow inform grub that XP is also an option now?

Main drive is SATA 80 Gig New Second drive SATA 1 Tb I can see both drives in the bios, They show up in g parted I've formatted and partitioned the drive and and every time I try to create a folder or share in SAMBA it tells me the I'm not the owner. I'm trying to install a network printer to my Gentoo workstation, but have never used printing in Linux before and am unsure of how to proceed. I'm stuck in the CUPS web interface based printer adding process, at what device and device URI to set. I have looked through the properties and settings of the printer on the server machine, but couldn't find anything relevant. The printer model is Brother HL-1430, and it's attached with USB to the Windows XP powered printer server and shared to the network. Other (Windows) machines in the network can successfully reach the printer.

I was installing "wine" last night and since I knew it was going to take a while I closed the lid of the laptop and turned it upside down on the floor. (I always turn the laptop upside down when not using it otherwise might overheat)When I woke up this morning roughly 8 hours after I went to sleep the machine was turned off.Using the "last -x | grep shutdown | head -1" it stated that it went down at roughly 6 hours from when I went to sleep. The program I was installing got finished installing but I never set up an auto-shutdown program or anything of the sort.If this isn't a problem with linux then its a problem with my bios. If its a problem with my bios I will just have to live with it because my bios is locked. /var/log/messages says this:
Code:
alexslaptop logger: ACPI event unhandled: battery BAT1 00000080 00000001
alexslaptop shutdown[14933]: shutting down for system halt

I've got the new ubuntu server all configured except for the print driver database.. IEE.. when I try to connnect to a printer from a Windows node it needs me to load the driver.. I've got about 35 printers so I dont' want to do this for each one and I want them to be mirrors of the other 2 with the drivers so there are no conflicts..My question is,,, is there a way to transfer the Samba printer database mappings from one box to another?
