Feb 22, 2011I recently re-installed my U10.04 and this time around, I added a root user and brought the permission levels of my default user to "Desktop User" as well as elevate the root permissions as explained elsewhere in these forums. Everything went fine until I wanted to "sudo" something from the Desktop User account terminal. I use Skype a lot and preferred to use the repos to get it loaded. Into synaptic where it asked me for the password. I entered the password and I was rejected. Ok, maybe I typed it in wrong. Tried again. The third time I checked in an editor to make sure I wasn't in all-caps. Third time OUT!
Switched user to root and there were no problems. Enabled the partner repos, installed Skype, as well as all the other stuff I use to run my home office. I have missed something, I know I have - perhaps a setting somewhere in the user permissions. I don't want to have to switch user every time I have to make changes to the system. Alternatively, if it's better practise to just leave my system as it is for security purposes I'm not running a server, but I'd like to have my system as secure as reasonably possible without elevating my problem to "paranoid security" level.......

Aug 10, 2011Is there a non-root shell command that can tell me if a user's account is disabled or not? note that there is a fine distinction between LOCKING and DISABLED:
LOCKING is where you prepend ! or * or !! to the password field of the /etc/passwd file. On Linux systems that shadow the passwords, this marker flag may be placed in /etc/shadow instead of /etc/passwd. Password locking can be done (at a shell prompt) via password -l username (as root) to lock the account of username, and the use of the option -u will unlock it.
DISABLING an account is done by setting the expiration time of the user account to some point in the past. This can be done with chage -E 0 username, which sets the expiration date to 0 days after the Unix epoch. Setting it to -1 will disable the use of the expiration date.
The effect of locking to to prevent the login process from using a supplied password to hash correctly against the saved hash (by virtue of the fact that the pre-pended marker character(s) are not valid output character(s) for the hash, thus no possible input can ever be used to generate a hash that would match it). The effect of disabling is to prevent any process from using an account because the expiration date of the account has already passed.For my situation, the use of locking is not sufficient because a user might still be able to login, e.g. using ssh authentication tokens, and processes under that user can still spawn other processes. Thus, we have accounts that are enabled or disabled, not just locked. We already know how to disable and enable the account - it requires root access and the use of chage, as shown above.To repeat my question: is there a shell command which can be run without root privileges which can output the status of this account expiration info for a given user? this is intended for use on a Red Hat Enterprise 5.4 system.The output is being returned to a java process which can then parse the output as needed, or make use of the return code.

May 20, 2010I'm having a problem mounting a vfat partition using fstab... If I don't use fstab and mount it manually, everything works fine. But if I add a line to fstab, it will mount, but will have root permission only - so I can't write to it. can mount another partition (ext4) through fstab and everything works fine. Just not sure why there's a problem with the vfat partion. Also, if after mounting it through fstab I try to unmount it, it gives an error saying only root can unmonut it.

When I try to reinstall Spotify using the "Spotify Installer.exe" I just keep getting the famous "NSIS error" (without any error code, it's plain NSIS). When I try to run the "Spotify Installer.exe" through a terminal it gives me:

Any help in this bloody mess is much appreciated since I can't (I hope no one can) live without music.

Debian Installation :: User Login Fails / Root Ok
May 26, 2015Debian 8/Cinnamon fresh install. /home is being shared with two other OS's, Mint and openSUSE. At the login screen I enter my user name and password and the screen blacks for 1-2 seconds and comes back asking for user name and password. I can login as root. As root I can launch the Group & Users GUI and attempt to set the user's password, and pressing the 'change' button does nothing obvious.
I can set the user's password in a terminal, which reports success. I tried to switch users and login with the changed password and I get the same failure. If I try to login with the original password I get an incorrect password error, suggesting that the password is being processed properly and the problem is elsewhere.
On previous installs with Mate and the default desktop (Gnome) I didn't have this problem. So, the questions are: Is it Cinnamon? Is it an unlucky chance bad install? Config files are typically in /home, which is being shared with Mate and KDE, is this the problem?

Oct 28, 2014Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.
Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.

Oct 26, 2010I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

May 26, 2010I am attempting to upgrade Fedora 12 to 13. I get an error screen that said root could not be found. Four options are given. Not sure exactly their wording, but two appear to allow you to cancel the other two warn that if you reinitialize you will wipe out all data.
I have a Vista partition and a Fedora partition. I've added the vista ntfs partition to fstab with no help. All of the partition use the long UUID form. I added the root location (root (hd0,5) to the upgrade menu item in grub.conf and that didn't work either.
I'm reluctant to proceed for fear of initializing the entire drive. I could live with installing Fedora 13 over the existing partitions.

Jul 31, 2014Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?
