I updated my Suse 11.1 distribution and suddenly Firefox stopped working. I went to a terminal and typed in "firefox" and nothing happened. No error message, no nothing. It just stood there.
If I did the sae as root or as another user, then Firefox would load as usual.
The issue for me was that I was using NoMachine (NX) to access my machine. It adds some lines to the LD_PRELOAD session variable. I removed the variable content et voila! I've got my Firefox working again
To check if you're in the same potential situation, do a "set | grep LD" and check the result. If you've got "LD_PRELOAD=" with nothing afterwards, you're not in the same case as me. Good luck finding our fix. If you see "LD_PRELOAD=some stuff here" then you may be in the same case as me. The type in "LD_PRELOAD=" and hit enter to clean he variable. Then in the same terminal type in "firefox" and it should just work.
I ran an update after installing the OpenSuse 11.2 Gnome Live CD and could not start Gnome.Signing in would only get me a blank screen with wallpaper.Changing the display manager in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager to kdm (from the default gdm) resolves this issue for me:DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

View 5 Replies View RelatedI loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.
Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.
I just installed today's updates (apart from XFCE, which I had installed from Robby's website) and get the following error when I try to start exaile:
Code:

I'm looking at the changelogs and can't figure out which one is the culprit.
After doing a regular software update on a 5.5 box (and rebooting), I now have problems starting xen (version "xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.3.x86_64").
Running "/etc/init.d/xend start" yields no output, and checking the script, I see that the script halts if "/proc/xen" doesn't exist.
Checking the filesystem, I find that the "/proc/xen" entry is indeed gone. Restarting the CentOS box does not help.
Should I reinstall Xen? If so, should I remove any portions of Xen before I do?
Update:
When I run /usr/sbin/xend I get:
Just used Synaptic to update my video driver for the XFX RADEON R250x. It was working before when I had installed the drivers from the AMD site. But I was told I needed to use the kernel compatible, so I did this update. Now it boots up and hangs with blank screen where it would usually go to login. I've got a boot disc where I can boot into and we can look at the logs ....

I could not update this week and got an error -"PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed:/Raw/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/'"I get a similar error message when starting Yast Software Management. Is this related to the 11.4 release? I'm waiting for fewer bugs before I upgrade to 11.4, so I'd like to be able to keep current with 11.3.

Two questions:1) What is a ksmserver and: 2)How the hell do i solve this problem?
I'd like to install Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit, over my Ubuntu 10.04 Amd64.
When I insert the live CD (that is working, I've used it yesterday to
install on my desktop at work),
the Boot from CD is skipped (but is configured properly
in the BIOS, in fact when I installed the 64bit version I had no trouble
at all) and the existing OS is loaded instead.
It seems to me to read some error related with the device (but
is fast and can't be sure what the message says).
After Ubuntu has been loaded, I can read and explore the CD.
I'd like to know how to solve this issue, any advice?
I'd want to boot from cd again, but if you know how to start
live installation when Ubuntu is already running, may you please let me know?
I launched 11.04 upgrade from a 10.10 ubuntu. Now default linux does not boot it blocks on the ubuntu screen with dot not moving. Dot come back alive when I shut down system. Commands does not work. I can launch an older kernel but it is a pain, and I cant change boot order too, which is a big WAF issue. What can I check or do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I've upgraded my Maverick installation to Natty using the "do-release-upgrade" command. The upgrade completed successfully according to the tool, but after I rebooted my system and chose "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic" in GRUB my screen went black showing an blinking underscore and rebooted after approx. five seconds.
When I entered the Safe Boot environment the last thing my system did before rebooting was attaching the SCSI devices but didn't show any error message.
Same with (successful) clean installation from Desktop-CD and Alternate-CD on a clean HDD.
After I upgraded I still had access to the "Previous Linux Versions" option in Grub, but when I started the Maverick kernel my system displayed a blinking underscore for about 30 minutes - until I shut it off. In the Safe Boot environment of the old kernel the "Failsafe X" option resulted in the blinking underscore again.
This happens with the final version, but also happened with the alpha and beta versions.
Ubuntu is the only OS on my PC.
I only tried this with the GNOME version of Ubuntu, but will try to use Xubuntu now.
Running the latest wubi.exe on Windows 7 x64.It creates a %temp%/pylXXX.tmp.exe file (with wubi logo) that it removes after ~1 second. It creates a %temp%/pylXXX.tmp folder wich is empty and that is not removed.Running in XP compatibility doesn't help, removing generated files don't work either. The wubi process dies quite quick and after it gets ~4000kB memory usage.I don't find any log files

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

Update Manager is inviting me to update from my Maverick Meerkat to Natty. Is this a good idea?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:
Code:
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb
Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.
Code:
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

I have just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop which was already running on windows 7. The installation itself was ok, however, after the restart in the end it did not want to load anything. I get just a blank screen. I am not much of a linux expert, so all I could do is start thee computer via a live cd and see what is there. And it looks normal - windows is intact, new linux partitions are there, GRUB is also there. What should I do? Reinstalling everything is not a proper solution...

nvidia geforce go 4 series gpu.(if I remember correct it is a MX 440)

I figured out Lubuntu would be al right, so I connected my usb cd/dvd reader(cause intern cd/dvd drive is broken) put in a disc that I burned with my other pc and started up the os. the live cd is working al right when its at the menu and I choose to start it it hangs for 30 sec-2 min then it starts to load and eventually the desktop shows up then I can start to do things but as soon as I open something the gui disappears before the program opens.
I tried to run the installer but I get the same issue. I see my mouse changing when I start the installer the mouse pointer doesn't points to the left side of the screen any more it points at the right side(which is strange) I tested this on my other pc and the installer loads up just fine and everything works ok(though I still have the mouse pointer issue if I start the installer)
btw if you got any ideas for a better distro these are the requirements: my mom is a linux newbie so an easy to use, lightweight distro for internet browsing, emailing and text editing(word) is needed. I think lubuntu will do? btw2: is there any way to import settings from the windows os to the linux os? btw3: dual boot should work just fine if I install this without deleting the windows partition right?

When i do update from Terminal, i dont get all updates which are in Update manager. Why?
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... Why do I have different results ? Is something missing in my "sources.list" file ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedNormally Update Manager always finds the update to the next version of Ubuntu. It still hasn't given me any notion whatoever. I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.
