I just tried to update from 10.10 to 11.04, as the computer was restarting, it asked me to login from a terminal screen, and never fully loaded. I logged on and it stayed in the terminal screen, I tried rebooting and still nothing...
View 1 RepliesI have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.

I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.
i am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine said he could make my system faster and preceded to kill some processes. I have no idea if that is related but my computer worked fine until I shut it down for a while. When I went back and turned it on it gives me a screen is mostly black with the terminal in the top left corner. If I type "exit" it takes me to the Ubuntu login screen with the colorful background and all. If I sign in it takes me right back to the previous described screen. I dont think it has anything to do with the graphics card or driver because on the login screen and even on the black screen I have a cursor. Plus using nano to view the Xorg log I saw no errors. I have also in desperation removed all Xorg.conf files and remade them and I have tried startx. dont tell me I should backup all my files and pop in an image disk and go from scratch
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble installing Ubuntu Netbook edition (v10.10) on my (brand new, No other OS installed) Asus Eee PC 1215T. I've successfully booted from the flash drive and can "Try Ubuntu," and everything works when doing so, however when I try to install it, the installer freezes on the second screen, right after language selection. To be a little more specific, that's the screen with the checkmarks next to "has at least 2.5 GB available drive space," "is plugged in to a power source," and "is connected to the Internet."
After I hit the "Forward" button on this screen, I just get an infinite wait cursor. I can still freely check and uncheck the boxes, and click the "Quit" button, so it's not entirely frozen, but it just won't progress any further.
I had this *exact* same problem just over a week ago when I tried to install Ubuntu on my desktop, also using the flash drive method. I ended up using the Windows installer to get it installed on my desktop, but as the netbook doesn't have any OS installed, that's not an option this time.
when I install Ubuntu from disc, it goes all the way through the install process and everything works fine until the part where you make your account, password, etc. When I enter all the information, sometimes it will say 'copying files..' for a while and I'll wait. Before long, though, it will say 'Ready when you are..' but the button that says forward is still greyed out and I cant click it. Ive tried going back and then forward again and it still doesnt work. Ive tried the install twice on two different discs and it wont work. Whats going on?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am new to slackware, but not new to linux. I recently installed slackware 13.37, and am enjoying it very much so far. The most annoying problem I currently have is that, after starting X, I cannot switch to a virtual terminal or even end X without having a problem. For instance, from the GUI if I hit ctrl-alt-F1, instead of going to the 1st virtual terminal, the screen fades quickly to black and does not return. I have not been able to make any progress on this problem, so any input would be greatly appreciated.The only thing worth noting really is that I'm using Fluxbox as my default window manager. Other than that I haven't done a lot of modifications to the base system other than installing some basic packages, but I had this problem since booting directly after installation of the os.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell computer of mine but I can't get it to boot past the loading screen. I'm using 10.04 live CD. At the loading screen (boot, memory test, etc..) I select to boot the live CD and after that, I get a black screen followed by no signal from my monitor. My monitor is a 42" LCD TV (I had plans to turn this PC into a HTPC using Ubuntu and Boxee). I know Linux will work on this box, because it has in the past. Now, before I used to have an ATI Radeon X 1300 PCI-E card and now I am using an ATI Radeon 2900GT, and since cannot boot.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this to work?
i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

How do I go back to the 'normal' Ubuntu desktop screen? Rebooting only takes me back to the terminal command page described above. I can access root commands with sudo bash and my password, if fact all terminal commands seem to work. Is there a command I can use to go back to the regular desktop?

my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a PC installed with FC 14:AMD 9500 Quad Core4GB RAM2x ATI X1950I've been using FC14 for a few weeks after updating from FC13.The graphics driver was a default one, it worked but it would only recognise one of my screen cards and I wanted to install the ATI Catalyst software so I began the process of installing the proper drivers.I followed the howto at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503 Once I'd finished the driver seemed to be sort of working but everything was going really slow. If I moved a window it'd take a while to redraw in the new position, menus took ages to pop up, and so on.
I tried running aticonfig and got an error message (unfortunately the only record of it is on the machine I can't access properly). I put the message into a search engine and found a bug stating the same message where people had the same problem with Nvidia and intel cards too.The problem was something to do with python and how it started up the drivers (sorry I can't remember the message). The bug had an rpm attached that was a patch to fix this problem (I'm blabbing on in case any of this jogs the memory of someone that had this problem or worked on it).I installed the patch and rebooted and now Fedora gets as far as the black screen where a progress bar fills in white at the bottom of the screen but it stops there. Once the bar is completely white it sits there and gets on further no matter how long I wait.Does anyone know how I can recover this system? Is there a way of getting the system to recreate xorg.conf before this stage and load using the default driver again? The point it's hanging at is the point where it would normally bring up the graphical progress bar then the login screen.
another post about this. I just don't know how to handle this, as I'm pretty nsee the grub loading menu, but screen just freezes after, no way I can reboot, or open a console. In recovery mode I can log as root in console, though.I run Debian 6, 64 bits. I have an intel q6600 and a nvidia geforce 9800GX2.

I uninstalled what I thought were random orphaned packages relating to evolution (evolution-data-common, etc..) Turns out that this uninstalls gnome-panel as well, although it didn't warn me. Reinstall gnome-panel and it will reinstall the required packages (you can still run synaptic from terminal!)
Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I had uninstalled pulseaudio and it's related libraries, then I rebooted, and now I can't log in.
Also, the log in screen looks different. Where it used to have the ubuntu logo, it now has a computer monitor icon.
Logging in from the command line works.

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.
I have spent the better part of 2 days perusing these forums for assistance. Here is the short story:I run a 7 year old custom build with a 82865G Intel Chipset and a NVIDIA FX5200 graphics card. Had been running a sluggish XP and after adding 2GB of fresh RAM wished to start fresh with my old friend, Ubuntu.
I've tried 10.04 LTS with and without my NVIDIA card installed with no luck. I have successfully installed 10.04 using the alternate install, but this also goes to black. I can hold shift to see GRUB and play around there, but no luck so far. I've also tried 9.10 but have not gotten past the pulsing Ubuntu image. I've seen plenty of support for NVDIA and Intel onboard graphics chips suggesting boot commands like nomodeset and i9015.modeset=0/1...it's all falling short.
I'm heavily leaning towards just installing an earlier LTS or a different linux distro all together. If there no one can help me debug, maybe someone can suggest a distro that will make me happy.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04 onto my Dell Latitude e6510 (through the wubi installer), but I can't get anything except a black screen. I'm pretty new to ubuntu, but after a bit of looking around at graphics issues I found a bunch of boot parameters and tried different combinations of them. i915.modeset=0 Gave me the purple loading screen, until the screen went black and I got flashing caps lock and scroll lock lights.xforcevesa gave me a completely black screen -- not receiving power at all
I also tried noapci, acpi=off, irqpoll, and pci=routeirq as parameters. None of those had any success.I've also tried letting ubuntu boot with a black screen until I heard the African drums and pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go into the console, but the screen stayed black then as well.
I have downloaded Last version of Ubuntu 11.04 and installed it. The installation went correctly with some flickering in display during installation. But the real problem starts after installation, when I turn on my PC and select Ubuntu from GRUB, the screen flickered a lot and then went black and PC got hanged.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.
First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.
Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".
I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 recently using the installer (which was awesome, I've wanted to install Ubuntu again for awhile now but I didn't have any usable CDs and that wasn't available before or I was blind). I'm dual-booting with Vista 32 bit and it was working fine as far as I could tell for a week or two... but I noticed a few days ago, when I would try to boot into Ubuntu, once I selected 'Ubuntu' and then got to the screen where I'd normally ENTER on the 'linux-blahblahblah' thing, it's a command line. I can't get much out of it because half of the first word or so is too far to the left of the screen, I'm unable to read it.
I don't have the time to figure out what I'd search for for a fix for this. I'm only just now getting around to seeing if it would do it again today.
I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 for about two months now and it became my primary OS. I was in a hurry last night so I powered off laptop in a "bad way" - pressing the off button while the computer was running wipe. Today I tried to start Ubuntu but I can't get past the login screen which, also, looks like it switched to a "simple" theme - like in Windows xp when you turn off theme and GUI switches to "simple" theme. On this same screen there is a message saying something like "Configuration error! Power manager configuration isn't configured correctly." in the upper right corner. f I enter my username and pass it just resets to login screen again after a few seconds.
