Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Will Not Restart After Install Prompt

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop. When prompted to restart after installation, I select Ubuntu (not recovery mode) at the prompt and Ubuntu will not start. All I get is a big bright purple screen which does nothing. I have read some forums that suggested that setting the partition space was wrong and to try to reinstall it. I have tried to reinstall it but I do not get the option to adjust the partition at all. I did the first time I installed it but never saw it again. It just goes right through the installation process and asks me to restart. I again, select Ubuntu and I get another very brightly colored screen. I am trying to use it as a dual boot. I have Windows 7 right now and it works just fine. I have no idea what to do now. I also do not get any error messages. If there are any, they pass way to fast for me to see them.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on hd1 - /dev/sdb1 at the end of the installation I chose to install grub at hd0 - /dev/sda1. The file system I chose was ext4 for ubuntu "/" - 50 GB,
ext3 for "/home" - 5 GB, and 1.5 more for swap. When the installation was complete I got the following prompt:
GRUB loading
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

There was nothing I could do, pressing TAB did not show me all the commands like grub is expected to. Typing 'help' did not show any commands as well, instead it showed me - "NO SUCH COMMAND" or something like that (I did not took note of what the output was). I believe the problem is in the grub loader - which was not really installed properly in hd0 - /dev/sda1 (which is FAT32 - windows)

I am wondering how to add a need to restart notification in a Debian package, so upon installation, it'd pop up something to tell the user to restart the computer for changes to take effect. Perhaps something like what happens with some packages through the update-manager when it prompts the user to restart for the changes to take effect.
Is there any way to do that? Perhaps adding something at the end of a "postinst" file?
Thinking about it, I could just add something like this at the end of the "postinst" file:

notify-send -t 86400000 -i /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/status/info.png "Please restart the computer for all changes to take effect."
It'd work, but not as well. For instance, if the person isn't by their computer at the time.
Another option could be using a Zenity dialog box. That might work. Though, if done, wouldn't a yes/no question box keep the actual package from technically finishing until the user would select yes/no to restart?

I tried to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows XP machine, using the USB stick trial OS and automatic installation. My screw-up came when I left my external USB hard drive plugged in during the install, and as far as I can tell, Ubuntu was installed on that as opposed to my internal HD. Now when I try to boot, I get knocked straight to the grub rescue prompt with an error message that basically shows my "no such device (my external's ID)" -- assuming that the MBR (which I know nothing about editing) is trying to boot off the external that isn't actually enabled until an OS starts it up, and dumping me at the rescue prompt when it can't find it.
I can still load up the trial Ubuntu off the original USB stick (though can't get online with it without wireless drivers), but that's as functional as the computer gets right now. And I don't have a Windows Setup CD anywhere (using a rooommate's Mac at the moment with a terrible European keyboard on it). So is there any way to edit the MBR or something to tell it to boot my regular XP off my internal HD, at which point I can re-partrition and try this whole thing again, or otherwise remove the failed install of Ubuntu through the trial-stick or... well, I'll leave the suggestions up to you all. I've been working on this since about 4am last night and my brain is kind of fried.

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I installed Umbuntu (MythBuntu 11.04 as backend system) and initially when starting it just went to a blank screen (no prompt, nothing). After going through safe mode I was able to get to a prompt and into the UI in low graphic mode.After updating the graphic drivers (nvidea) to the latest and changing some grub options (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off splash") when I restarted it went to the busybox initramfs prompt. I typed "exit" and the UI started up normally.
The next time I restarted it went through to a blank screen. I typed "exit" again and enter and the UI started up normally again (even though I couldn't see what I was typing at the time).While I was going through the recovery mode I do remember some messages about disk not found/mounted, when I googled it I found stuff about entering rootdelay=90 in menu.lst which doesn't exist anymore. Is there a similar option I can enter somewhere in 11.04?Also I'm new to Ubuntu (in fact any Linux distro as an admin), where would I find any log files that may help with finding the problem.

I recently attempted to install Debian 8 on my iMac (late 2011). I partitioned my drive using disk utility to create FAT partitions (100GB for Debian and 2GB for SWAP) and installed rEFInd to boot into Debian.During the installation process I selected the drives I partitioned and set the mount points for each as / and swap.
Everything was fine and installation was successful and was prompted to restart to set up Debian. However when I did Grub did not recognise the Bluetooth keyboard. Unable to do anything it started the "Debian GNU/LINUX option" and loaded into what seems to be the grub prompt/terminal with the following displayed in bold:

Just tried to install a minimal F13 from the first CD. Picked minimal as the choice and it still asked for CD #1 and #2. I'll have to doublecheck if that can be averted by manually unchecking everything. However, a bit more disturbing--though that's annoying enough--was the fact that I, on a VM at least, couldn't get to a bash prompt during the anaconda installation. Is that normal now? Can anyone confirm or correct that on an actual hardware install, vs. a VM?
One used to be able to, with F5, or maybe F1, IIRC, get to, during a Fedora installation, a shell prompt, the way the vast majority of distributions do. I'm wondering if this is just an oddity due to the VM and possibly Fkeys not working properly, or something else that they've taken away from from Anaconda.

I just installed a test Natty VirtualBox server from the "mini" iso. After doing that the normal boot always ends with a blank screen and cannot login. The recovery boot option does work normally. After much digging around and various tests I found that the "splash quiet" boot options cause this issue.
I removed them from the /etc/defaults/grub file and ran update-grub. Next boot the login screen came up after as normal. It seems when the splash flashes that purple screen with the Ubuntu 11.04 message it is breaking something and does not get back out of some graphics mode.
This is in a VirtualBox window and I noticed that vesa framebuffers seem to be used by default in grub now. I never had this issue in previous releases and I'm just wondering if others have seen this and if there is a better fix than disabling splash. I don't mind having it disabled as this is a server install anyway and I'm fine with seeing debug messages during boot. If other have seen this then perhaps it needs to be logged as a bug?

I just upgraded my system's motherboard with an Asus M4N78 Pro and did a clean install of 9.10. The install seems to go fine but when it finishes and does the final restart I seems to get stuck at the place you'd normally see the GRUB menu. Instead all I see is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the left corner. This isn't just a long boot, its stuck. It never progresses past this point.
During the install everything seems fine. Video, network etc. I've tried several reburned CDs and I get the same result each time. For the record I've installed Ubuntu as a single partition an IDE drive. The bios is set to boot from that drive. ow the heck can I figure out what is happening? Is there a way to boot and display any and all messages displayed? Is this thing hanging in GRUB somewhere?

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 onto my external hard drive yesterday for use in an dead laptop. Hard drive on the laptop is dead and has no operating system. Downloaded the iso for 10.10, as well as the Universal USB Installer. Everything went well, and Ubuntu started up and loaded onto the laptop. I was so thrilled to have my old laptop working again! (it's much better than the netbook I'm on right now)
Restarted Ubuntu after creating a partition on my external hard drive, and it wouldn't restart. So, I went back to my netbook and reformatted the hard drive to factory specs, and started the process over again. Now, when I try to boot the old laptop from the hard drive I get a message that says, "Multiple Active Partitions" and it won't boot from the external hard drive.

I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:

with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

I've happily finished a SWE course that required VS2010, and thus a new computer to run the hog. Now that the course is done, I'm installing Ubuntu. As the post title implies, the live CD works well and the install goes fine. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu and do an update. After that, though, Ubuntu freezes on boot. It gets as far as the moving dots but freezes right after that.

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

Just got done installing U 10.1 into my old Dell desktop. Since I'm pretty darn new at Linux, I'll do my best to explain. Upon selecting Ubuntu to boot, I get a 'grub>' prompt, much like C: in DOS. But, at this point, I haven't the slightest idea of what to do.

I decided to upgrade my FC installation to the latest version - FC itself offered the upgrade when I turned the machine on, so it appeared that it was nicely packaged to make the upgrade easy.After a long download of packages, the machine rebooted and then started taking me through configuration options (timezone, disks to use for the installation etc) but then it crashed trying to write to disk and now leaves me at a grub prompt whenever I boot.Is there any way to "get at" the installation files and get back into trying to install or do I now need to download an ISO and burn a DVD and start all over again?

I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

I have been trying ubantu 9.10 via dual boot (with windows XP) for a while now. Today I decided to wipe out windows and install ubantu only. After I completed the install I get GRUB prompt and I cannot type anything. I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

I'm quite a newbie, and that being terse haven't ever been in the list of my virtues. Still, I tried so many things, that this post couldn't possibly be shorter then it is.Yesterday I upgraded my Kubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10 using adept. During upgrade I accepted everything that was offered including (one)new configuration file for I don't know what. After reboot I still had grub1, after trying regular boot system froze with error message that usplash process doesn't exist or so; briefly, only recovery mode worked properly. I think I entered clean option accidentally, if not, I haven't done anything special, yet after n-th reboot usplash problem disappeared, but I had another freezing screen, with something like:

PS. Isn't ubuntu suppose to resolve dependencies automatically?

I installed 64 bit Lucid Lynx last week. There were some issues with the grub boot manager and my windows boot manager. However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?

I just made a live USB of 10.04 Lucid using the Startup Disk Creator; but when I boot it gives the "boot:" prompt. Typing anything in like "help" or hitting enter just gives an error that it can't find the kernel image.
