Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 To 10.10 Corrupt Upgrade?
Jan 19, 2011
I think my upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 got corrupted. The update manager got half way through upgrading the system and then complained about some dependency. I forgot I hadn't closed the update manager and ran synaptic with it still open to update some packages. In any case I think the system got in a mess as
Code:
cat /etc/issue
gives
Code:
Ubuntu 10.10

today I upgraded (yum update) one of my Dell Poweredge Server from 5.2 to 5.3. After rebooting the system first seems to start normal but then the following Error Messages appear:
Apr 5 14:28:26 srv_1 kernel: I/O error in filesystem ("dm-0") meta-data dev dm-0 block 0x668000008 ("xfs_trans_read_buf") error 5 buf count 4096
Apr 5 14:28:26 srv_1 kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Apr 5 14:28:26 srv_1 kernel: dm-0: rw=0, want=27514634256, limitfs]
[code]....
Booting with a rescue disk and doing a xfs_repair solves the file system Problems but moved a lot of files ( at least /usr/bin and /usr/lib completly) to "lost+found"... I tried the update with a spare 5.2 Server (different Hardware), and ended up with exactly the
same effect and error message. Both systems are running XFS as root File system on an LVM Disk.

I am dual booting a lab of 30 machines in an elementary school. They already have XP installed and I don't want to mess with that. I certainly don't want to have to go to each one with a windows CD to 'repair' each one if this goes wrong.
So i tested on one (installed through PXE) and Ubuntu boots fine but I am getting:
'ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt' errors now. I can't move on until I sort this out.

This is the second time my ubuntu was killed with updating, it would freeze, or goof up, or something to mess itself up. I need a better way to update, one that will not corrupt my Ubuntu.

When I try to boot from the Live CD of Ubuntu 10.10, I end up with a whitish corrupt screen, which should be the 'Desktop'. The CD is good and works on other PC's. I have tried two other graphics cards with the same result. It is therefore impossible even to install it. I have installed many other versions without problems. This PC works perfectly with Windows XPVistaWindows 7 and other Ubuntu versions.

I used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer, then I decided to install Ubuntu but it didn't work for me it gave me really weird errors, I thought I uninstalled it, and then I installed Debian on my computer, Debian ran smoothly but when I tried to start Windows the GRUB from ubuntu appeared and when I tried to start windows again it showed and that the hal.dll was missing, I reinstalled Windows but still the same error appeared, this also affected my Debian GRUB so I had to install it again, I don't know what I should do in this case. How can I delete ubuntu's GRUB for good? I've already formatted my windows partition but it keeps using Ubuntu's GRUB.

I think I managed to corrupt my master boot record, or have a very intractable problem with Grub.
I'm not sure how I did this, but my desktop will boot Ubuntu fine from a USB, but every time I try to install it, the install seems to go fine, but when I finish the install and the machine tries to boot the OS from it's hard drive, it does not work. The monitor does not get a signal and it just goes to sleep.
I tried posting here to resolve the problem before, tried everything on this thread: [URL]
But nothing worked.
I have even tried running the system from a USB, running a "shred" command for the hard drive and then reinstalling - my theory was that the shred command would destroy all the data on the hard drive anyway, and allow a "clean" install from whatever was corrupt on it, but no luck - when I installed Ubuntu on the hard drive, same problem.
I'm not clear where the problem lies now, I'm assuming there is something up with it's master boot record, but there are no partitions on it's hard drive and I started with a completely blank, unformatted drive.

Hey guys,
I' trying to install 10.10 Desktop from a CD onto a Dell E5410 notebook with Windows 7 installed.
The problem is that during the installation, the installer doesn't see the Windows partition, moreover, it doesn't see _any_ other partition.
I've tried with CentOS 5.5 as well and it returned some error related to GPT Partition Table corrupt which might have been corrupted by a software (or not).
Removing Windows 7 completely is not an option, there's a bunch of business applications which will not run on Linux even with Wine.
I'm not sure if the problem lies on the hardware, or the installer.
The BIOS provides advanced UEFI boot options and legacy boot, but this doesn't explain why no partition is discovered.
Tech specs: core i5, 4GB ram, 320 GB disk space. The installer is 32 bit, but I'm quite the architecture doesn't really matter.
If someone has more knowledge about this kind of issue, any answer is welcome.

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.
I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.
I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.
What I can do to get Windows to install properly?

I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

First off I must state that I am basically completely foreign to linux. I have 2 hard drives, one with windows 7 and storage partitions, and the other with my linux partition, linux swap, and unpartitioned space.I initially partitioned my drives with Disk Management in Windows 7. I created an NTFS partition on sda and installed Ubuntu from within Windows (a Wubi install I suppose). I originally intended to install by booting from the iso I burned onto a CD,but the installer was failing to load (fonts would change and it would error message). LiveCD was failing to load too in the same fashion. After hitting alt and tweaking the F6 settings, LiveCD successfully loaded (my very first taste of Ubuntu, albeit somewhat bland). I then decided to reinstall Ubuntu with proper linux partitions from within LiveCD. Now when I select Ubuntu in the Windows Boot Manager, a WBM screen says the file:
ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr is missing or corrupt. I do not know if this file is the problem or merely a symptom of it Below I have copied my Boot Summary (my apologies for the length and extra partitions):
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

I know grub2 does not work, giving me error: ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. I did install grub-legacy and it worked, but I had to re-install squeeze due to other problems. So, now I want to replace lilo with grub legacy.

I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,

"Warning: file:///cdrom/pool/main/p/pam/libpam-modules_1.1.1-2ubuntu5_i386.deb was corrupt" this has come up during the "Install the base system" stage of my installation. i checked the disk for errors before starting and it came back 100% okay. I'm using an alternative install disk because I had similar problems with a regular one. Installing on a Dell DV051/E310, pentium 4.
Can anyone shed some light on why I'm having so much trouble installing? Had less hassle making this box a Hackintosh.

Am fairly new to linux and like opensuse distro so far and determine to get it to install on my system along side my default windows OS, iva tried 11.1 and manage to get it working, however my main goal was to set it up as a development environment i.e php, java, i had to remove it later on due to certian circumstance, lastweek ive decide to try gnomelivecd 11.2 but ran into a few errors during the final stages of installment while it was Automatically Creating Configuration, with the help of oldcpu i manage to ran installation again without a black screen but this time at the same instance where the error occurs first then direct me to the failsafe screen and am stuck there ever since. Am now downloading 11.3Mildstone6 which was recommended so what am asking now is help to remove those portions, grub and restore MBR. I have tried repairing it by booting from both a winodws7 DVD and external HD but failed, the error returned was an unexpected error occurs try again. However i can boot into gnome from the live CD and Check System > Boot Loader another error popup stating that
