Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Install :1st SATA Port Not Recognized As /dev/sda - Solve This?

My computer has 2 HDDs attached to 1st and 2nd SATA ports of my mobo respectively, the 1st SATA drive is empty while the 2nd have my Windows Vista on it. I also have a Perc/5i RAID card with 2 RAID arrays defined.
I am going to install Ubuntu 10.04 x64 to the 1st SATA driver (I expect it will be /dev/sda), but when I try to install, I found my drives are recognized as below,
/dev/sda > 1st RAID array of my Perc/5i
/dev/sdb > 2nd RAID array of my Perc/5i
/dev/sdc > 1st SATA drive < I need to install ubuntu on this drive
/dev/sdd > 2nd SATA drive
I don't want to install 10.04 as /dev/sdc because I may add more arrays to my raid card which from my experience of 9.04, it will probably change the drive letter of my current /dev/sdc and then system will fail to boot.
Is there any way to force my 1st SATA HDD as /dev/sda during install ?
I just built a new system which has 4 SATA 3 Drives and 2 SATA 6 drives. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium which has 2 SATA 6 ports through a Marvel controller.I have Windows 7 loaded on one of those SATA 6 drives and it recognizes and boots fine. My intent was to load openSUSE 11.3 on the other SATA 6 drive all by itself and then use the SATA 3 drives as other file systems. When I go to install, the only drives that the openSUSE installer sees are the 4 SATA 4 drives, the SATA 6 drives do not appear at all. Note that when the system boots from the DVD the load of the Marvel Controller says IDE Passthrough Mode and displays those two drives. So how do I get openSUSE to see those drives so I can install and setup Grub to boot from there. I'm afraid if I install to just the SATA 3 drives, then I'll never get to Windows 7 again (should I ever need it ) without much gyrations. I've also tried booting from gparted-live and it does not see them either.
OS: Ubuntu Minimal ( OpenSSH, Samba )For some reason my Blacx Duet sata dock is not getting recognized and I am not sure what I am missing but it seems to work when I connect it to a full ubuntu install that is in a VM.Anyone know if something needs to be installed for it to work properly... regular flash drives work perfectly fine.
I can not install ubuntu 10.04 32 or 64 bit on my computer
Every time I put in either DVD I get a guy and next to him is a regtangeler box, then the screen goes black with a blinking white line up to the left and then it goes completely black then monitor turns itself off
This happens with both 32 and 64 install versions
So how do I install it or just use it a s a live cd
I have a pretty new computer that I Run windows 7 on that I am trying to get Ubuntu on code...
I have one server, in this one application is running on ports 80 and 443, but i want to run another application in different ports, When start the application, application is running fine in the server but i am not able to connect to that application from the web browser.
It seems to me that other port(i.e. except 80 and 443) not listen by the server.
OpenSUSE 11.2 server, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P sda for system, 3 ext4 partitions, working fine.sdb promise RAID1 for data, 1 ext4 partition, working fine.sdc is an eSATA docking station for data backup, 1 encrypted ext4 partition -- here lies the problem.
This configuration has been functional for months until I decided to add two more external drives (sdc) to rotate through backups. I had difficulty with encyption on the first new drive and eventually decided to start over. Using the gui Yast Expert Partitioner, I deleted the single partition. That began a real nightmare...
Since deleting the partition, the system detects drives inserted in the docking station, but does not report them (including a different fully functional drive and a brand new unused drive). I have tested all drives on other computers and they function perfectly. I have rebooted the system several times while troubleshooting this issue.
Could not recreate the partition on server (since it does not recognize the drive), so I used Gparted on another computer - it all went without a hitch, formatted ext4. But when I placed the drive in the dock, the drive still was detected but not recognized.
The partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool.
Yast partitioner shows drives: sda, sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, sdb1 sbc is not listed.
So how did partition deletion cause this issue, and how do I correct the problem? It is possible that my difficulties encrypting the first new drive are related (it's not my first time doing it successfully). It seems the problem is in the Kernel or configuration. I have invested many hours in forums and on google - tried dozens of possible fixes. I'm beginning to suspect system corruption or a bug, however all other system functions are working perfectly.
I'm trying to install ruby on rails on Ubuntu 9.10. I'm following the instructions on this site: http://castilho.biz/blog/2009/11/05/...-karmic-koala/
However, when I try to install Rails I get an error code...
It seems like gem can't access http://gems.rubyforge.org/gems/rake-0.8.7.gem for some reason, but when I try to go directly to that address I get the option to download it. Any ideas how to get around this problem?
I'm thinking if I can somehow tell gem to look for the file locally I can download it and install rails that way.
I usually don't have problems installing Linux but Fedora won't install into 4 GB for me. I get to the partitioner, try to create a 4 GB partition, actually have 7 GB free, but it tells me there is no space on the drive. As I said, I usually don't get this problem but have not tried Fedora before and don't understand.
I have Linux system with 6x500 GB sata drives on LVM. I want to change 1 of the disks with larger - 1 TB. I don't have available free sata ports, so I'll add pcie sata controller. I'll add the 1 TB disk to the pcie controller and will use "pvmove" to transfer the PEs from one of the 500 GB drives to the new 1 TB. Then I want to remove the 500 GB disk from the LVM. I want to remove the physical disk from the box and to place the 1 TB disk on its place. But I don't know if the LVM will recognize the disk? I want to remove the pcie controller from the box because the motherboards sata controller is better.
I'm looking for recommendations for a controller card with support for around 8 devices using SFF-8087 cables. I currently have a AOC-SASLP-MV8 [URL] which while working "OK" still has known problems with drivers. Can anyone recommend a card they use for a storage box? I'm using software raid.
Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.
Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP 6540b laptop - dual boot with Windows 7. I keep getting stuck on:
1. [GUI install] after step 3 of 7 where a KB layout (I've tried many other layout) is selected then going next and it hangs there trying to do something.
2. [Alternative install] stuck on 45% of scanning disks at "Starting up the partitioner" code...
I've tried desktop 32bit and 64bit install and also alternative 32 and 64. Also tried installing from CD & USB drive.
I guess it's something to do with the disk partition? Anyone come across this before?
I've installed 10.04 with similar dual boot partitions layout on an older HP 6710b without any issues.
I'm trying to solve an intermittant serial port problem on an embedded medical monitor. We have determined that the port is receiving characters from the external device but the serial thread is not transferring the chars from the buffer. Has anyone seen this before? Looking for some guidance on what to look for. this problem happens at start up about 1 in 50 boots. We're using kernal 2.6.29.6.
I've been trying for a couple days to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop after using for a couple months on my laptop.My desktop has an Asus M2N32-SLI mobo, with a single 100GB HDD.I currently have Win7 installed and have resized the partitions using gparted from within the Ubuntu LiveCD.When I start the install from the icon on the desktop it goes until it asks where to install and then it doesn't show any drives at all.Most of the things I see pertaining to the nvidia chipset and HDDs talks about RAID. But I am not running any kind of RAID. Just a single HDD.
I've got an Addonics AEIDDSAU multi-flash reader/writer that uses the SATA port LINK. I'm running XUbuntu 10.04, 64 bit on an Intel DQ45CB motherboard. The board has 5 internal SATA-300 ports and one external eSATA-300 port. The Addonics reader works fine on the eSATA port, but it doesn't work (properly) on an internal SATA port. By "doesn't work properly" I mean that when connected to the eSATA port, plugging in a memory card causes an immediate detection and the contents of the card pop up in a window (as they should).
When connected to an INTERNAL SATA port, a plugged in card does not show, and using CFDISK to look at the "drive" shows an unformatted 64MiB disk that really doesn't exist. Being an INTERNAL device, the Addonics reader is rather worthless if it doesn't work on an INTERNAL port, and there's no clean way to bring the eSATA port inside the computer. By the way, I'm sure this is NOT a "Linux" problem because the reader behaves the same way in Windows XP.
I have mounted a server with 4 hdd sata raid 5 with adapter LSI Megaraid SAS/SATA 8204ELP but centos dont detects raid. Can you recommend me a adapter 100% compatible with centos 5 with these requirements:
First time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub. Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno. edit; Here's fdisk with Fedora on sda6
Configuration: AMD 2500+, 2GB RAM, ATI HD3850 AGP Problem: Can not install OpenSUSE 11.3. Boot from the disc - the installation screen resolutions, modes of installation - everything is in order. But when the installation can proceed - loading (logo) and just a black screen - possibly the installation goes - but no picture. Also try to set mode "vesa" - loading equipment "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... and again in the black screen.
I'm trying to install 10.04b2 x64 on my new rig and for some reason the live cd can't detect both of my 1TB Sata 3 drives. There is no Raid and the bios has them flagged as IDE. I have also tried adding pci=nomsi to the boot string to no avail.
I am running 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 (the first gen.). I was using my Ethernet port to connect to the internet until about two weeks ago - suddenly the system no longer recognised that port even existed and just kicked me offline. I am able to get online now with a wireless card (replaced the broadcom card, that was a whole different can of worms...).
why my system is unable to connect with the Ethernet port? If I plug in the cable nothing happens.
I have a trayless SATA hotswap bay that is really terrific for quickly attaching and removing SATA hard drives. I'm trying to write a udev rule to create a symbolic link to the device node for the drive that is attached through the hotswap bay (/dev/bay -> /dev/sdX). This eliminates any ambiguity when performing destructive tasks (fdisk, etc). I'm running squeeze amd64. I've read through several tutorials and have it working somewhat. Here's the output of udevadm info for a drive attached via the hotswap bay.
Here is my udev rule DEVPATH=="/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host7/*", SUBSYSTEM=="block", SYMLINK+="bay%n"
This produces the desired behavior and gives me an fdisk-able device node. The problem I am having is that the "host" component of the DEVPATH varies from bootup to bootup. I'm just using on onboard SATA, host2-7, specifically host7. There is also onboard PATA, host0-1. It seems to just be random which "host"s are assigned to which controller. For example, the next time I boot the system, the onboard SATA will be host0-5 and the onboard PATA will be host6-7. In this simple case, I could just write 2 rules, one for each possibility and it would still be correct because of the different PCI addresses of the two controllers. But on systems with more SCSI (uh... libata, actually) controllers, a "host" file can point to different physical ports between bootstraps. This would be bad. Does anyone know of a way to write a rule to tie a device node to a specific physical SATA port on the motherboard/hba?
A command like (single quotes used in the command):

is getting an error message like:
channel_setup_fwd_listener: getaddrinfo(::1): Address family for hostname not supported
This is supposed to be an IP address, not a hostname, for the localhost in IPv6. Anyone know what is wrong with this? Addresses like this work OK in rsync. I know I can use ip6-localhost as a hostname. But right now I'm testing actual IP addresses in IPv6 to see what programs can or cannot handle it.
I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:
1. Problem with SATA controller 2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA 3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI 4. Replacing the SATA cable 5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps
- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")

I've just installed 10.04 twice on 2 separate disks and it seems to have done something really strange to them. BIOS will not recognise them anymore, it just waits but they never come online. I have to unplug the disk completely for the system to boot.The first time I thought I'd just lost a disk, but when exactly the same thing occurred the second time around, it seems like too much of a coincidence.The installer didn't recognise the disks first time around as they were part of a RAID group previously. I did a dmraid -E -r /dev/sda to fix. After that just installed as per every other time I've used.
