Ubuntu :: Install Printer And Recognize Cd Dvd

Jul 14, 2011

Total newbie here. Just installed 11.04 alongside WinXP on an older eMachine. The pc has built in DVD/CD burner/player and CD player and Canon (i860) printer on USB. Frankly I don't know exactly what I've done so far, but my wireless connection is great, screen, keyboard, mouse are great. FireFox runs super. I am now on information overload after reading any number of posts. I am looking for real simple and direct So how do I get Ubuntu to now 'see' the printer and dvd and cd arrangement?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Refuses To Recognize Epson Stylus Color 600 Printer?

In 11.3 I used an Epson Stylus Color 600 which worked well enough.

Now I'm quite disappointed that this so called 'best version ever' (11.4) refuses to recognize this printer.

The modules parport, parport_pc, and lp are all loaded. My printer is on and connected, but OpenSuse claims that there is nothing.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install Suse - Does Not Recognize My CD/DVD Device

Jul 13, 2010

I built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.

Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.

I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.

Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)

Ubuntu Installation :: Alternate Install Does'nt Recognize CD-ROM?

Oct 29, 2010

i have a Compaq Presario S4020WM
2.0Ghz XP2400 CPU
768Mb RAM
2 40Gb Hdd
and a HD raedon 4650 AGB 1Gb Grafics Card

I have tried to install Ubuntu with this CD and it gets past the keyboard detection part and then it tells me i need to get the CD ROM drivers via removable media, i know this is a problem with ubuntu 10.04 because i can install just fine a 8.04 ubuntu.

i don't know what to do.I have tried to install from a USB but my comp is too old for that, i know its not the specific cd because i'v used about 5 different brands of cd just to see if it was the cds i was uesing,

I would just upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 but i get to the dbus part and the comp starts to run really slowly and eventually colors just show up, i left it for an hour to see if they would go away and fix but they didn't. Iknow my comp CAN run 10.04 because i have done it before, but i uninstalled and now i can't seem to get it to work again.

P.S. i have tried the live cd, same effect.

Ubuntu :: Vista Will Not Recognize NTSF Partition After Install

Jan 19, 2010

I have two hard drives, a 320GB and a 1.5TB. The first hard drive has two windows partitions. The first one is the main vista partition and the second one is one for factory restore (its an HP pavilion).

So wanted to install both ubuntu and ubuntu studio on the second hard drive, so I allocated about 1TB as an ntfs partition that I wanted to be accessible by both vista and ubuntu. So I have 400GB left for both distros. I have partitioned off two 40GB partitions for the two roots and I'm sharing one large home parititon and I put a swap partition at the end of the disk.

After I got through the second installation (ubuntu studio) vista no longer recognised the ntfs partition on the second disk. I thought maybe the install botched the boot sector, so I used testdisk to try to fix it, but it hasn't done any good. I do not want to format the second drive again because I have data on there I transferred over from an old hard drive before I installed ubuntu.

I tried to 'initialise' the disk in vista, but that just wiped the partition table so I had to fix that with testdisk on a live cd

Does anyone have any idea how i could possibly fix this problem or what winblows is thinking? I want to be able to read the partition in windows.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Does Not Recognize ESATA Drive

Jul 30, 2010

I have a working installation of OpenSuse 11.2 on a 300GB eSATA drive, /dev/sdb. I have a 200GB IDE drive, /dev/sda that I use as a data drive. Both drives are accessible to 11.2 and in use.

/Dev/sdb is actually an IDE drive with an eSata adapter since my mother board only has one IDE ribbon input that I use for /dev/sda and the DVDRW drive.

I chose to install OpenSuse 11.3 on /dev/sda in partition sda1. I've installed 32 bit and 64 bit with the same result. I put grub on the the sda1 partition and chainload to it from 11.2 grub. I'm cautious because OpenSuse can be troublesome during installation.

PROBLEM: The installed system will not recognize the second drive /dev/sdb or any of its partitions. It does not show up on /var/log/messages -- it does not exist!

I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps support of eSATA drives.

OpenSUSE Install :: VMWare Doesn't Recognize Usb Devices?

Aug 20, 2009

After a few tribulations, I managed to get VMWare server installed. The only problem is that it will not recognize any usb devices. I installed usb in the virtual machine using the VMWare interface and in preparation for that, I followed the instructions in the tutorial to the letter regarding fstab and the vmx file. Supposedly, at least according to Windows control panel, the usb controllers and interfaces are installed. The VMware web interface says the same thing. However, neither the Device tab on VMWare nor VMware Tools show any usb devices. The usb devices - a printer, removable drive, and magicjack - are all recognized by Linux. How can I get the virtual Windows machine to recognize the devices?

This is crucial since my major use for it is to run the magicjack which is not supported in Linux.

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Booting And 11.2 Repair Doesn't Recognize Itself?

Jun 11, 2010

but I know a fair amount about the OS. I really like openSuSE, and I was trying to install 11.2 on my laptop, completely blank hdd. It installed just fine;I used the default options (the partition scheme was /boot, swap, root, /home) and started thesktop without a hitch. However, when I restarted, my BIOS would not even recognize an OS on the hard drive. I was also unable to boot using the installation DVD. I tried to use the repair feature, and I would either get a message saying that the boot loader was corrupt,d could not be repaired, or that the package database didn't match the version of openSUSE installed. I've tried re-installing multiple times, all with the same results. I have tried different partition schemes and I've tried different booting settings, such as enabling boot from root or /boot partition

SUSE / Novell :: Install Fails To Recognize Ide Hard Drives

I've tried Ubuntu with similar results. Older kernels WILL install onto this same MB/PATA controller (Ubuntu 6.06, 2.6.15 and RHEL4) so it seems that something changed in the ATA driver as the kernel has matured and my bios isn't up to snuff for these pickier drivers.
