Ubuntu :: Install Mouse On System USB?

Aug 2, 2010

First, how can I find out what my mouse is? I am using an Eee PC. I have looked in Preferences / Mouse but it doesn't tell me.

I need to know because when I boot into a USB where Linux is the OS the mouse does not work (no movement when I move the trackpad). Hence, I need to install the drivers.

Ubuntu :: Mouse - System Lag

Jul 3, 2010

I am a quite new Linux user (been using Ubuntu 9.04 for a while now). A few days ago I decieded to try Linux Mint 9 (Gnome Edition) instead of Ubuntu 9.04. I installed it and everything works fine except from that the system or mouse/keyboard lags. The lag occurs when the hd is working (my guess). This problem did not exist in Ubuntu 9.04 and I am using the exact same hardware.

Hardware: MSI K8NGM2-IL, AMD 3500+ (singel core), 2Gb ram, 250Gb SATA Hd, DVD-Rw (IDE), Microsoft Habu mouse (USB)

Ubuntu :: Use System With No Mouse / Keyboard?

I know that by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+NUMLOCK I can use the number pad as a pseudo mouse, but is it possible to force this condition at boot without needing to enter a key press?

(I'm putting a computer in my car running Ubuntu and have decided to do away with both the mouse and keyboard and control it from a joystick on the steering column. This has been wired to the circuit out of an old keyboard to mimic the arrow keys on the numeric keypad.)

Ubuntu :: System Stucks Until Move The Mouse?

Oct 11, 2010

I just tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 x86 on my netbook (Lenovo S12 - Intel at all) but this is just horrible. The system is dead after a few seconds but after I moved the mouse or pressed a key it goes on normally for a few seconds and then it stucks again and so on.

Ubuntu 10.04 had the same problem but it was not that extreme! Maybe it stucks after 2-3 minutes but not after 3-5 seconds! And after I installed all the updates it runs just fine. What can I do? I really love Ubuntu and it's a pitty that I cannot use it.

Ubuntu :: How I Could Get System To Free Keyboard And Mouse When Get Lock-up

Jul 15, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 and using Virtualbox very intensively to develop under windows. This is the perfect combination: Virtualbox is excellent and gives great speed, functionality and connectability. However, I keep getting a keyboard and mouse 'lock-up' and find that I have to power-down my PC in order to get things working again. The strange thing here is that Ubuntu seems to continue working fine: for example audio keeps playing and the system once successfully finished burning a CD even though keyboard and mouse were frozen.

This happens only very sporadically but is a serious problem because I can't have things freezing when I am in the middle of development or am demoing functionality to a client. At first I thought it was Ubuntu but it only seems to happen when VirtualBox is running so I am wondering whether there is a problem with the keyboard and mouse capture for Virtualbox and that this is causing the problem.I have de-installed and re-installed Virtualbox but this didn't help.So does anyone have a idea how I could either fix this problem or how I could get the system to free the keyboard and mouse when I get a lock-up.

Ubuntu :: Unstable System Freezes But Can Move Mouse?

Mar 3, 2011

My work machine crashes 1-3 times a day, and I often lose work. This is getting very frustrating--I've never known a Linux system to be so unstable.

When it freezes, I can still move the mouse around. I believe it's also still doing some background tasks, since files have finished copying before and my music will still be playing, if it was before. But the mouse cursor doesn't change, and it's totally nonresponsive.

The trouble is, I don't know how to diagnose this problem, to tell you something less vague. I might be able to check, to see what's going on? The problem usually comes about when I'm doing something--either loading a new web page, or starting a new program, or even when I just hit a button. Otherwise, I'm just stumped.

Ubuntu :: Mouse And System Freezing/lagging/hanging?

May 7, 2011

since installing 11.04 on a computer that was running 10.04 perfectly, the system hangs for a split second every 10 seconds or so. If you make little circles with the mouse pointer you will see it jump position when the computer hangs briefly. If you are listening to audio or watching video then this also hangs for the same very short length of time.

I had the exact same problem when I tired going to 10.10 and so had to go back to 10.04. I was hoping it may just be an issue with that version but it seems not. The computer is: 1.6GHz Intel Core Solo, 1GB Memory, the motherboard is a Jetway Mini ITX board with integrated Intel graphics. It has no problem running the 3D stuff in Unity (or any of the old gnome desktops). Changing to 2D or turning off desktop effects in 10.10 does nothing to solve the problem. 10.04 seems to be the last time Ubuntu worked properly with the computer.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Flashing Mouse Cursor Crash On Mulitmonitor System?

Sep 17, 2010

this is a continuation of my install from : my experiences installing suse ( graphics stuff was from page 3)i have two graphics cards:ATI X700 x16 pcie card in a x1 slot (one monitor, left)NVidia GTX 7800 card in a x16 slot (two monitors, centre, right)machine boots up on the ati card, and i had configured them properly in the last topic, so now the setup looks good except for when i move the mouse cursor from the Nvidia card, left, over to the Ati card. this causes the GUI to be not responsive andthe cursor is flashing, either on neither monitor or one of the two and moving the mouse decides which (so its not a complete crash, but nothing is moving in the GUI). pressing many ys on the keyboard at once seems to stop the X and goes back to the the commandline.

the last problem i had in the last topic was that the virtual screen was not defaulting at the screen resolution i set and instead defaulted at 3840x1920 and i saw the top corner of the wallpaper. moving the mouse over to the ati card would still produce a crash with the above description.occaisionally the computer would crash with the same problem accross the nvidia monitors, however it always happens between the centre and monitors.i have installed the Nvidia drivers using a install program from the SUSe and it put the relevent packages on. Ati drivers are whatever came with 11.3 (and theseected that the card has two outputs). if its the nvidia drivers i could go back... (how?) hopefully it can use the two monitors still else its better to remove the ati screen in xorg.conf

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving A Moderately Complex System From An Old System To A New System

Sep 25, 2010

My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.

The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.

What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

The mouse is Bluetooth 4.0, but my Bluetooth connectivity is provided by my Intel Wireless 3160 card which does support Bluetooth 4.0.I'm using Blueman as a front end, and one other thing of note is that it shows as "Unknown" after a scan.If I need to return it, I need to return it, but it seems like a good mouse and I'd like to keep it if I can make it work.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot 11.4 On Dualboot Nvdia G7600 Based System - Fresh Install "system Console Stolen At Line"

Apr 22, 2011

I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).

I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

Fedora :: X Server - Gnome Screen Saver Cuts In And The System Remains 'as Is' Until 'woken Up' With The Mouse Or Keyboard

Dec 2, 2009

If I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.

I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

General :: Compiz Stops Updating Windows On A Multi-head System - Keyboard And Mouse Still Alive?

Dec 8, 2010

I am running Fedora F14 on an Intel I3 cpu w/4Gb memory and plenty of disk. I have two displays connected to the Gigabyte Motherboard, one of the HDMI connector, and one on a DVI connector. I run Gnome. When Compiz is enabled things work fine for a while, meaning hours or days. Then the displays will "freeze" to the point where the clock stops updating. The system itself is still running programs, services, and the mouse and keyboard work. The mouse cursor will move around, but nothing can be clicked upon. If a terminal was the open window, typing on the keyboard does not do anything, nor does ctrl-backspace or whatever it is to terminate X windows. The keyboard does allow me to press ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to one of the base consoles. Once there I can type to my hearts content. I can kill off my logged in Gnome session through the console, and I can shutdown the system in a controlled manner.

It is as if all of the windows stop updating. For example, I play music through Amarok. An hour after I stop using the system but letting the music play the screens will do their lockup. The clock will stop, and Amarok will stop updating which song it is playing. It continues to play each song in the playlist, but the Amarok window shows what was playing at the time that the clock stopped. I've also had this happen to me while using Yumex, where it would stop updating the screen while installing programs, but the programs do get installed. With Compiz off I don't have this problem.

The version of Compiz I am using is currently 0.8.6-3. It is running on Gnome 2.32.0-2, with a Linux kernel of 2.6.35.9-64. It has happened with earlier versions of these programs. I am using the graphics processing the Intel i3 chip to the motherboard connectors. The freeze generally happens at some random time while I am not actively using the system. It has happened to me while doing simple things like programming through an IDE. The really strange thing to me is that the cursor will move around on the screen after everything else stops updating.

I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now, and am by no means an expert. As a result I'm sure you will need more information but am unsure of what information that is or how to get it.
