I'd like to use the resources of the client computer when booting remotely. That is, I want the host to perform as little activity while the client does the work. I'm not familiar with remote booting, so I'm explaining what I'm looking to achieve.
In addition, I'd like for the host to be able to work locally concurrently. Would that work? Note that I'm running regular ubuntu, not server.
I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I would like to add another partition and install windows 7 64 Bit ( I know my hardware will handle it I checked). I don't know much about ubuntu and I was wondering will the bootloader automatically detect a new partition with win 7 x64 on it? Or if what I said made complete nonsense,How do I run Windows xp 32 bit, Ubuntu Fiesty 64bit( 32 bit mabey ) and Win 7 32 bit all on one pc?

And I want to have root access to everything via remote desktop or VNC.What I have tried: system->preferences->remote desktop to enable remote desktop, I can connect and see the desktop, the mouse clicks would only show on the directly connected monitor, not in my VNC session.Then I tried to install TightVNC server, start a at display :1, I can also connect, but every time any action requires a root access, such as installing a package using Ubuntu Software Center, the root password prompt would only show up on the directly connected monitor.

I am Trying to set up my desktop in order to access it from a remote computer using Remote desktop. I have ubuntu 10.10 and am using the included software remote desktop. When I run the programm is says i can only connect locally using the name "local host". I am trying to connect to my desktop from a vnc app on my ipod touch. I am very new to Ubuntu (any Linux) evironment. And it has been a long long time since I have dealt with seting up servers. I have done alot of searching but haven't found exactly what I THINK I am looking for.
I want to create a file server (I have created my Ubuntu server cd) and add it to my home network (all windows pcs). I need to be able to access it when away from home ( I work away from home mostly). I will be accessing this with a Windows 7 laptop.
What do I need installed on the server? Samba for the file server part. What else for the remote access? I also would rather not access the data via FTP. I would like it to come up as a drive in my Windows Explorer. If not, I remember back in college (20 years ago) when I could open a little window (XWindow maybe) on the other server.
An issue I see that might not be an issue. I have a static IP from my ISP. It comes into my home via their modem. I attach to the modem with a router. All my laptops connect to it wireless and this server will be wired. How do I hit the server and not one of the laptops with only having the one IP address? Each of these plus my external harddrive and printer have their own internal IP address' that I have assigned.
I am wondering how to setup a remote disk on my server so that I can remotely access files on my Windows laptop through the "Map Network Drive" feature.
How do I go about doing something like this?

I've had a computer for media files for a long time and now I changed from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu 9.
I the home network there is some Windows W2k and XP Home and I will use VNC or RDP for remote control of this Ubuntu desktop.
I've no experience of Linux at all and I've seen some notes about this with no luck.
I'm setting up a backup server using Centos 5.3 and an Adaptec 5805 raid card and discovered that I can't use a raid setup that is over 2TB in size as the boot drive. What I eventually did was set up 2 raids on the same set of 4 drives so that I have a 200Gb 'drive' for booting and a 2.6TB 'Drive' for data. I want to keep the OS in the raid setting so I have some protection instead of having a dedicated stand alone drive for the OS. This will be for a company wide backup server and I want to minimize the possibility of drive failure for the OS as well as the Data.
I was able to install and reboot the system and everything seemed to be working but after some working on it a bit I did a reboot and wound up with a non-booting system. I can boot to the rescue mode with the install dvd and mount the original system and I even tried to reinstall the grub setup per instructions I found on the net but still I get a system that hangs up after it asks if I want to boot from the CD. If I take out the CDROM option from the boot lineup in the bios I stop at the same place minus the boot cd prompt.
I'm guessing it is something to do with one of the raid drives being over 2TB but I'm booting from a 200gb sized raid so I'm really at a loss for what to do next??
Is what I've described the correct way to handle booting up with a large raid or is there another way to reconfigure the drives as one big 2.8TB raid and use something other than grub to boot to it?
I have 2 servers. One is an operational CentOS + cPanel server and the other is a blank CentOS server. I want to use cPanel's backup suite to backup our customers accounts but I want to do it so the blank server is mounted to the cPanel server, rather than an FTP backup. If that makes sense. I believe from previous experience that NFS is the way to go but I'm not sure.

This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.

On Windows XP, I am able to connect to my office via VPN client to connect to my office, then Remote Desktop to my local machine on the network.. Is there some way for me to do this with Linux? I find it really annoying to have to boot to Windows just to access my work pc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFresh installation of Fedora 14 x86-64 on Lenovo T510. I'm trying to setup graphical remote connection to this laptop via VNC. I installed vnc-server package and altered /etc/sysconfig/vncservers accordingly:

I found Remote Desktop which opens vino-preferences and ticked the check boxes there. I started vnc-server and then I tried to connect to it from the same local host using vncviewer. I got no errors and the window with correct resolution came up. The problem is - that window is black and empty. I tried looking into Fedora docs but I haven't found anything useful there. I tried google and I found about 487693746874363 solutions and different ways of installing and configuring VNC server. I tried a few - none helped.
I wonder if there is a decent and consistent documentation about how to make remote desktop working in Fedora without having a real pain in the ass trying out those gazillion tweaks and tricks from various forums and blogs? After all Fedora 14 comes with that Remove Desktop thing available out of the box. Is it a real working thing or just a marketing Should I uninstall all the preinstalled VNC stuff and follow one of those painful instructions found on the internet from A to Z praying for it to eventually start working after all the magic is done and hours or days are wasted?

I'm not consistently able to boot into Ubuntu Lucid on my new dual boot (w/ Win7) setup. Machine is a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Usually it takes 1-3 tries of hard shut down and restart before the OS starts up. Boot info script results are below. Windows starts up fine everytime. What I usually get is this: Dell startup screen, then Grub2 menu, then after selecting Linux kernal a blinking cursor at upper left of monitor and it just hangs.

I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Slicehost VPS and I'm trying to set up PPTPD on it. I only have one IP address (the public IP of the box). All the PPTPD howto's I've seen rely on assigning remote clients IPs from the local subnet (e.g. the PPTD server's local IP is 192.168.0.20, and remote IPs are taken from a pool of 192.168.0.30-40).
However I don't think I can do that as I only have the one IP address on Slicehost's network - that public IP (and all other IPs in the segment are public). So what I really want to do is to be able to create a private LAN segment or virtual network adapter and have VPN clients assigned addresses in that segment, then routed out onto the Internet effectively using the PPTPD box as a router. I am using Ubuntu Hardy (LTS).
I have just installed CentOS 5. I have set mysql database to access from remote machines. But now the problem is it is not connecting from the local machine now.

I'm trying to make a stop motion movie.
i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Remote client connections including failed logins are logged into the /var/log/messages but what is logged are gateway ip of our LAN - the LAN IP of Firewall device.
How can I logged the external or public IP of the remote client?
