Slackware :: Remote PC Control 101: How To Setup Gmail Remotely

Mar 21, 2011

I have never tried to do anything 'remotely'.My 87 year old uncle lives in British Columbia, Canada and I live in Quebec, Canada. Here is what I would like to try to do:

I would like to connect to his PC from my PC and then set up a Gmail email account for him. I think that I am saying that I would like to be 'as if' I were sitting in front of his PC at his house. If this is possible, what software do I need on my Slackware PC to connect to his Windows PC? What software does he need on his PC?

Here's the scenario: I can already control the music remotely via X forwarding banshee to my laptop (banshee shows up on the laptop and music comes out on the desktop). Now I want to be able to open a movie on the desktop's display via the laptop.

Now googling this comes up with solutions for X forwarding, but I don't want it to forward X I want it to display on the desktop.

What's the best or most practical approach to getting access to these computers from across the country?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Option For Canon Remote Capture - Remote Camera Control Software ?

Canon cameras used to come with a piece of software called remote capture for Windows and MacOS.

You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?

I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported.

I already can SSH in terminal to install and maintain stuff but, to move the mouse around and point him where to click or what to use would be invaluable.

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

General :: Command Line Email (Gmail) Setup

Software :: Cross-platform Remote Control - Remote Desktop Software

Jan 20, 2010

I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

Ubuntu Security :: Truecrypt - Remote Mount Volume - Or Send Bash Script Remotely?

Apr 1, 2011

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine at home and apache setup on it (files are located in a Truecrypt volume). The reason for the web server being that I wanted to access my files wherever I'm at (i.e. hotel, work, hotspots, etc...). So far, it's worked out great for me seeing as a I can http download my files (or stream media files). However, I am often on a public hotspot and I know it's a matter of time before someone finds the webserver on my computer. I have the machine firewalled and password protected (via .htaccess), but either way I don't want people looking in on my computer.

The problem: I have used Truecrypt for a long time and completely trust using the program to encrypt/unencrypt a volume container to store my files. Usually, I would remote desktop into my computer and mount/unmount the volume when I needed it. However, after time it get's really annoying to do this. So I eventually figured out how to setup a bash script to automatically do this for me (which I put on the usb part of my phone). What I wanted to do was to be able send the bash script to my Ubuntu machine (via ftp from my phone) and have Ubuntu automatically run the script. Is this possible? What programs do I need on Ubuntu?

I was thinking about using something like cron, but that is for scheduled times. I don't really have a set time in which I need my files, it's pretty sporadic depending on how much I travel. Thus the need for being able to remotely mount the volume when I need it.

Summary: I need a way for Ubuntu to read a folder every minute or so to check for bash scripts to run. I want to be able to send the bash script via ftp from my phone, have Ubuntu run the script, then delete itself (so as to not store the password). I already know the script in which to mount the Truecrypt volume and how to send the file via ftp from my phone. It's really a matter of what program to use in Ubuntu to find and run the script.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup The Most Efficient Way To Remotely Administer A System?

Aug 7, 2010

I am trying to setup the most efficient way to remotely administer an ubuntu system. So far I was successful in setting up ssh. I have the server running and made sure it only uses keys to authenticate and changed the default port. I can connect to the ssh-server. This system is behind nat and bots trying to break-in when I forwarded the port. I used the AllowUsers option, which helped in knocking back these rouge connections. I was not comfortable leaving a port open all the time, so I set up logmein Hamachi VPN and closed the ports that were open on NAT.

Now I use Hamachi and am very impressed. I use VNC in VPN. But Vino is slow, I tested x11vnc and it was slightly faster. I also tried to set up freenx but nxsetup file was missing. some one posted that file in the forums and suggested copying to the system but I was not sure if I want to download a script from the forum and use it. So for the time being, I thought I will just concentrate on X11vnc until freenx is fixed.

I would like to create a separate desktop on the server and use it to access remotely. This way we will not have to fight over the cursor (sounds funny but very frustrating). From what I understand x11vnc has this function inbuilt (uses vncserver). I cannot get it to work! when using ssh, at the remote machine's command prompt, if I type "evince xyz.pdf", it does not launch the "xyz.pdf". what am I doing wrong? When using VNC, how can I change between different users on the remote machines? Right now I can only use VNC in one account that I first setup. When I try to change to another user, vnc client goes blank. How can I get as much control of the remote system as possible? Right now I need someone to switch on the remote system and login to their account before I can VNC. Can I use ekiga inside VPN, I use skype right now and it's sometimes terrible with dropouts. I looked around and someone suggested using ekiga as it works very well over lan. How do set up ekiga so that I have a direct connection with the remote system? Is there any client that just takes the IP address and creates a connection? Mumble seems to be the popular choice, it's most suited to LANparties, I just need a connection between two systems. I am trying to set this up to help users with hardly any computer knowledge to use the system without any issues.

Ubuntu :: Remote Computer Control Through SMS ?

Apr 27, 2010

As for what I am trying to do: I am looking for a way to run scripts and/or launch programs from a cell phone using SMS. I've found a few options close to this, but nothing that really fits what I'm trying to do. It seems I can either get speed or ease of use, but not both. To explain:

If I understand correctly, Evolution has this functionality through email, but email isn't instant. I'm trying, as best as I can, to use my phone almost like a remote; sending email from my phone would create a considerable wait time.

Using Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature with AIM lets me use SMS to get a quick response, but I'm running into the problem that I can't make its action depend on what the message says. I want to be able to text, say, "Shutdown", and have my computer run a shutdown command, but Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature doesn't seem to support checking for specific messages. I've been unable to find a plugin that changes this; if there was, it'd probably be my best bet.

Bluetooth is out; my computer's bluetooth adapter died a long time ago. Additionally, some of the things I'd like to do would be when I'm not near the computer, so even if it was functional, it would be limiting.

Anything that requires any apps for android, iPhone, or w/e are out too. I have an LG Dare, and while it's a nice phone, you can basically forget custom apps.

So, to recap, I'm trying to find some way of sending an SMS or email from my phone, have it be received as quickly as possible, and have the computer run a console command based on the content of the SMS/email. Any ideas?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Can See Remote Desktop But Can't Control It

Dec 1, 2010

I recently installed 10.10 64-bit on my laptop. I have an older laptop with 9.10 32-bit on it. I installed vnc4viewer on the 9.10 laptop and started and set up remote desktop connections to let the remote user view and control the local desktop. I then tried Remote Desktop Viewer for the Applications menu on the 10.10 laptop and I can log in and see the remote desktop. When I try to do anything through the vnc viewer I can see my changes affect the serving machine but not the viewing machine. For instance, if I grab a window on the viewing machine and try to move it around the desktop, I can see it move on the serving machine. I guess the connection could just be very slow but it seems real time on the serving machine.
