Dec 10, 2010I am wondering what the difference is between the two. I know that the server does not have GUI enable. Does the server have more server programs installed by default?

CentOS 5 Server :: No Xinetd Installed By Default?
Jul 18, 2009yesterday I installed my first CentOS system. Before I was always using Debian for my servers. When I configured my vsftpd I was just wondering how to setup xinetd or inetd for listening on ports and starting vsftpd. I found /etc/xinetd.d. But there is no xinetd installed by default. Why? Shall I start all my services in standalone mode? What is the concept of CentOS in this issue?

Sep 2, 2010I recently made the switch from gnome to kde. After struggling for two straight days I finally have everything the way I want, and I must say that I am quite pleased with Kde. The one thing I want to do now is get my computer to start up without running printer applets and bluetooth and all that other stuff I don't need. I have had little luck finding any info on this one.

Mar 1, 2011In the applications menu I would like to always run certain programs as root. For instance Wireshark; I'll never want to run that as a regular user I'll always want to be root. Is there a way to set it up so that when I click it in the menu I'm prompted for my password and it will automatically run as root? (Much like in windows you can right click and check the box that says always run as administrator.)

Apr 11, 2010i am using Ubuntu 9.10. I want to make a live CD with some programs installed i know i can do that by chroot ,etc. but i cannot re-download all packages again due to bandwidth limit. The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...

Mar 22, 2011I am running usb version of lucid 10.04.2, with many apt-get installs. Shortly after running awhile, programs will not run, I get either an "input/output error" or "Bus error (core dumped)". (Examples of programs rendered inoperable are top, df, file)
I've read something about a memory leak in Lucid, but in my case, the computer doesnt slow down, things just stop working. Is this a known problem with Lucid? I'm thinking maybe one of my apt-get installs corrupted something. Is this a known problem that has a software update available?
Here is the output of "top" which fortunately currently DOES work, while other progs don't. (the memory usage stays constantly in that 1.5 GB range)

Oct 14, 2009So I just installed a LiveCD version of Fedora on a USB stick. I also did a persistent disk so I can install a few items.
My main goal is to use this to remote into my home computer. I *think* I installed rdesktop, but I don't know how to access it or where it was installed. Here's what I did to install it:
su -c 'yum install rdesktop'
The installer downloaded a package and reported that the install completed.

Aug 25, 2010I am running AnyMeal, which is a KDE program. There's a link in the set-up for FAQs, but when I try to open it I am told "Could not launch the browser: Could not find kfmclient". I checked /etc/alternatives, and the x-www-browser is set to be iceweasel (Debian's firefox), which is what I use. I do not have Konqueror installed. I use Fluxbox, however, I also run some Gnome and KDE programs. I checked if there is a package I may need, but came up empty:

I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.
