Debian :: Search Installed Packages And List Available Docs
Jan 11, 2016I have realized that in not installing suggested packages I've missed out on a ton of doc files, which would really come in handy while I'm away from internet access.
Is there a way take a list of currently installed packages and find out which of them have doc packages available? Possibly install them in a single step? I have been playing around with aptitude and apt-rdepends, but I'm not quite sure how to go about this. Somehow take a list of installed packages, run it through an apt-cache search, and end up with a list of -doc packages to install? My bash-fu isn't the greatest, and I suppose this could be a bad idea to begin with.

Mar 11, 2011I found that "ask search engine" installed as default web search engine instead of google in firefox. Now it's impossible to go back to google search engine as "ask" always remains as default search and no other search engins are shown in the firefox list.Any idea about how to get rid of "ask"? I managed to install another "unofficial google" search plugin but if i click on restore default search engine "ask" will be restored.

Dec 19, 2010I had some major bugs with KDE 4.3 and 4.4 and the only way that I could fix them was to install the entire KDE 4.5. This was mid-Summer. Now I would like to upgrade to Maverick the proper way and have 4.5 in a stock repo.
I managed to get most of kde back to stock by luck and uninstall/reinstalling kdebase stuff and kubuntu-desktop a couple of times. A pain in the neck trying to find important packages that are already installed from a previous PPA.
BTW my sources.list is stock right now.
Does anyone know of a way to search for installed PPA packages that are not in the stock repository?

Jun 12, 2011I am looking for a tool to index the files on my PC to allow full text search. I use recoll on Ubuntu and it does a great job. As I described in a previous post there does not seem to be an rpm package available for recoll on CentOS and I have not been able to build from source.So I tried beagle. In a nutshell the old version of beagle available for CentOS 5.6 does not do a good job of indexing pdf files. The newest version, tried on Linux Mint, does not do much better. And the beagle web site seems to be gone so I am not sure if it is an active product.
I have done some searching and most of what I find appear to be tools for indexing a web server. That is a bit of an overkill for my needs. I simply want to be able to search old email archives, OpenOffice documents, text and pdf files stored and accessed locally on the PC?
CentOS 5 Networking :: DHCP: Option Domain-search (119) Not Supported?
Oct 14, 2009I have an issue with the DHCP clients in a lab environment I am building. The lab is in a dns subdomain but the clients should be able to resolve any machine in the lab subdomain or the parent by using just the hostname. According to everything I have read, the client resolver should do this automagically, trying first the naked hostname, then the FQDN, then walking up the tree of parent domains. But it doesn't.
So I thought I'd just have the dhcp server set the domain search list to include both the local and parent domain. But adding "option domain-search" to dhcpd.conf causes dhcpd to fail on start up. Does the current version of dhcpd in CentOS 5.3 really not support this option?
CentOS 5 :: Find Search Initiated At Boot That Takes Several Hours
Dec 18, 2009I noticed that every, say, 5 times I boot CentOS 5.4, a find search is initiated that takes several hours.
For example:
find . -name rd=rmdir -print
I'm not sure if it's related, but, I do have a "alias rd=rmdir" in my .aliases. Would changing it to "alias rd=/bin/rmdir" avoid this problem? I'm using zsh. Is this search necessary?

Apr 5, 2011i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

Jul 8, 2009I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

Nov 10, 2009I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?

Feb 19, 2010When my CentOS virtual machine boots it uses DHCP to get an IP address. It also overwrites resolv.conf with the DNS settings provided by the DHCP server. The DHCP server doesn't supply any search domains so I would like to get dhclient to put in a list of search domains when it writes it. How can I configure dhclient to do this?

Feb 23, 2010This should be simple but I can't seem to find what I am looking for.I want to search a text file for the existence of certain strings and execute a command if they exist, something along the lines of:

or

I know how to manually search a file with grep, cat, etc., but the "if this exists" part eludes me.
