Ubuntu :: How To Recover Ecryptfs From Other Partition
Nov 3, 2010
I recently had to install ubuntu 10.10 through wubi because my olde ubuntu broke after a failed upgrade. Now I am quite happy with everything in 10.10 except I can't get to the files in my olde home folder because I chose the home folder encryption option in the installation process. How can I recover my home folder? They all seemed to be recovering from another user not another partition.

After a disastrous upgrade to 10.04 I am at my wits end trying to recover my /home partition from my unbootable system. The /home partition is part of a RAID5 array across 4 disks and I've been trying to use some disk imaging tools from Ultimate Boot CD to recover it with, but none of the utilities seem to recognize or will let me work with my multi-disk device.
Currently I've been booting up with a Live CD in attempts to mount the encrypted partition then copy all the files to an external device I bought, but the mounting process has presented me with some problems. The partition in encrypted with ecryptfs and I have both the disk's passphrase as well as an FNEK signature to work with. Attempting the following:
Code:
Another small issue is the cipher I used. I don't remember which kind of encryption the disk is encrypted with (80% sure it's aes though). I assume figuring out which cipher I used will be more like a guessing game through the ecryptfs mount prompt, but I'm wondering if this would affect the error message I get.

I have an ecryptfs partition on a usb drive, system runs Debian squeezeWhat I'd like to have is that when I connect the drive it will be auto. mounted and I'lleither have to enter the passphrase or it will already be in the keyring (even better). It seems ecryptfs can auto-mount a directory but I want to auto-mount an entire encryptd partition. Is this possible?.Also, can I have another encrypted directory, say ~/Private, at the same time or can ecryptfs handle only one at a time?

I need a way to recover my Windows partition that was completely repartitioned when I originally moved to Ubuntu.
When I first moved to Ubuntu 8.04, I somehow overwrote my Windows partition. It happened on a laptop and since then, I've purchased a new one so I can now go back and attempt to unzip the partition holding 10.04 and get to the files I had under Windows.

Well, my laptop slid off my couch and crashed down onto hardwood floor. The hard drive is shot. I was using grub and had both ubuntu 10.10 and windows 7 on it. Can't load either OS.
What options do I have for trying to recover data off the ubuntu partition? I tried loading livecd...for some reason, it won't work. Does livecd require a working harddisk?

I was trying to resize to the left the sdb5 partition where ubuntu is/was installed and things got messy. I lost the partition it was unallocated. Next "cleverly" used livecd and reinstall ubuntu (thinking it was just like a repair the system thing) but instead ubuntu install from new...all my data is lost...gone with the wind. I try sadly enough testdisk but it says partition corrupted impossible to recover. Now the whole disk shows as unallocated in gparted.
I am running ubuntu from a second hard drive and strange enough my windows 7 partition with files is save and sound. I wonder if there is anything I can do to recover my files (guess the enitre partition now is lost). I try photorec and no files were able to recover then try scalpel and it says files were not find or couldn't read the partition. Of course "cleverly" I didn't had a recent back up of my files. Now I cant access the new ubuntu partition that still in sdb5 at boot takes me directly to windows 7.

I used to have a dual boot vista + ubuntu jaunty configuration. I installed ubuntu bootloader in the ubuntu partion not the MBR using advanced option during installation. Then i used Easy BCD to edit my Vista Boot Configuration and add an entry for Ubuntu.
Problem:
Everthing worked like a charm, until one day i decided to shrink my vista partition to get some free space using Microsoft Windows Disk Management Utility "diskmgmt.msc".
Now when i boot into linux i get grub prompt only.
When i do this (to find out my linux partition):
Then i booted with ubuntu live cd
Same thing : file not found
And i dont see my Ubuntu partition in My computer under Live DVD session.
Then i opened Gparted it doesn't show any ext2/ext3 partitions instead it shows my ubuntu partition as Upartitioned. Now is it that my ubuntu partition is dead, i can never recover it back.

I installed windows 7 over an existing xp partition and windows 7 made a 100 mb partition as some sort of windows swap space thing. This basically made my ubuntu partition unreadable, even with gparted. How to recover this data?

I have stupidly and inadvertently formatted my home partition on my other system while trying to 'downgrade' to Ubuntu 9.10. I have isolated the hard drive and am currently using Testdisk to discover the partitions on there. The scan hasn't yet finished however it appears there are two entries of each partition.
Here:
Linux 0 1 1 4012 254 57 64468776
Linux 0 1 1 4012 254 57 64468776
Linux 4013 0 1 14032 254 59 160971296
Linux 4013 0 1 14032 254 59 160971296
Linux 9079 0 1 14032 254 61 79586008 [home]
Linux 9079 0 1 14032 254 61 79586008 [home]
When attempting the downgrade, I was wanting to keep the home folder (and root and swap) all at the same size. I am pretty sure I fouled up by trying to revert the file system type to ext3 from ext4. Which partition out of the two 'home' ones, I should be attempting to keep? I cannot see a difference between them but this is how testdisk has reported the drive. Apart from the standard 'back up everything next time' and more fitting for me 'pack up your PC and never use it again!', does anyone have any specific advice on recovering my original home partition?

Yesterday, my windows partition (in a dual-boot with windows7/ubuntu) failed, and in trying to fix that partition, I managed to mess up both, including the MBR and what not. I have been desperately trying to recover them, and believe there's a good chance of doing that as I haven't yet written any data since the crash.
On running testdisk, I have the following info about them:
Disk /dev/sda - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63, sector size=512
Disk /dev/sda - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
1 P HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 191 89 26 3072000 [TOSHIBA SYSTEM VOLUME]
2 * HPFS - NTFS 191 89 27 5274 254 63 81668827 [S3A6747D002]
3 P Linux 5275 0 1 29494 254 59 389094296
4 E extended LBA 29494 254 60 30401 254 63 14570959
5 L HPFS - NTFS 29495 0 1 30400 254 54 14554881 [HDDRECOVERY]
I am quite sure that the data I'm interested in recovering is in the partitions found on rows 2 and 3 (which correspond to my old windows drive c:, and my shared data drive, respectively). Currently, I am running off ubuntu that's living on my portable harddrive, and system> Disk Utility shows the internal (messed up) harddrive as one unpartitioned unknown mass of 250gb, with "bad sectors".

While setting up my laptop on a new hard drive (a bad mobo caused writes which pretty much rendered teh old hdd unusable) I was asked if I wanted to encrypt my home partition.
I've been wanting this for several years - even going as far as trying to get a copy of CheckPoint. That's waht my organization uses on all Wintendo laptops and is required.
In any case, I said "yes" and am happily using my laptop with an encrypted home partition. I'm assuming based on this - [URL] - that it is using EncryptFS as the scheme.
if I were to misplace my laptop, how easy would it be for a forensics team to retrieve my data. Let's assume I have a fairly strong passphrase, such as BisZumBitterenEnd3. [URL]

I had some major problems after the recent Ubuntu upgrade and had to boot from a live cd. I have a separate /home partition, but it was encrypted using the default install encryption in the 9.10 install cd. How can I get to my files so I can back them up?
I have tried this but it did not work: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1337693

I installed Ext2fsd from windows XP because I needed access to a text file on my ubuntu install. However, it didn't work because the drive is ext4 and all it listed was the root folders (/home, /var etc..) nothing any deeper.
I closed the app and continued working in windows.
Today I went to start my computer and it loaded the grub-rescue> prompt. I immediately tried to run "help" to find out what happened, however, grub reported the command as unknown.
I then ls and got a partial listing of the partitions.
Code:
(hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,1) (fd0)
So what do I do? How do I recover my linux partition? If the partition is bad - then how is the bios able to find the grub-rescue> prompt?

I wanted to upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty. I opted for a format/reinstall as I figured upgrading usually sucks. To save my important data, I resized my partition (partition A), formatted the empty space with ext3 (now partition B), and moved the necessary files from partition A to partition B. Then I went through the install process and installed Jaunty on partition A, telling the installer to NOT format partition B. It gave a warning about the installer deleting system folders (var, usr, etc) but I figured it didn't apply. I was wrong.
So now partition B is "empty." I know it didn't format it, but I need to get those files off of there. I have created an image of partition B using ddrescue, but I don't know where to go from there. I tried using foremost, but it won't recover things like my virtual machines and completely nukes the original file structure I had. And I've tried mounting it (using sudo mount -t ext3 -o loop /home/user/recovery.img /mnt), but that doesn't seem to work. The mount command completes successfully, but nothing shows up in the folder I mounted it to.

I have some problems with LVM partition. We have suse linux 9 on our FTP server. After crashing our power supply we face some problem with our hard disks. We have 3 hard disks on our system, one is 80 G and two are 250 G. The Os is installed on 80G hard disk and 250G hard disk has LVM partition. After fixing the power supply, the Os is booted but LVM partitions are not mounted automatically. After researching on the web, I found a lot of article about LVM partitions but I want to recover my LVM partition.
1)What should I do to be able to mount my LVM partition and recover my data.
2)Can I mount this LVM partition on another system. I mean I have connected one of 250G hard disks to usb port, and yast detect this hard disk. Of course on the main system it was detected, too.

Well the title says it all. Royal screw-up! I accidentally formatted two Windows partitions inside a Pointsec encrypted hard drive using gparted from a liveCD (in USB). Is there a way to recreate these partitions? If not the whole partition, at least be able to recover everything inside My Documents.I ran TestDisk and it will not see any of the two partitions that existed in the drive.

Accidentally, I deleted my '/etc' & '/bin' folder (i know, my fault). Then, I boot liveCD and tried to copy or fix this issue. And then when I can't figure nothing to fix it, I don't know why, I want install system on my existing system, and I thought that new installation don't touch and change my /home folder. And this step Was my biggest mistake, after this I get raw /home partition without my data. Now, I'm trying recovery my data from /home, and I don't know how do this. I'm using program testdisk but I don't know how it work with lvm and ext4. Can I recover content of '/home' or it's impossible?
