I have deleted the ubuntu partition on my xp pc. Now at restart i have the following:
GRUB loading.
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
I have no idea what to do now. I have downloaded super grub - because one of the pages that i googled said it would help - but my pc does not read from either the cd or usb drives - don't know why.I need this pc recovered today .
This has happened twice to me. I'm editing a filename on the desktop, for example, I have a part of the name highlighted and press delete. Inadvertently, I press delete again, but with nothing highlighted. The file is deleted, but is not added to the recycle bin (possible bug).
I believe that is what is happening. I cannot seem to recreate it purposefully on my work computer --I had done this at home this morning while sans-coffee.
Is there a way to recover the files?
I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.

When Windows tries to boot it goes to "GRUB" and says "partition not loaded". What are some GRUB commands? And is it possible to fix this without using the recovery CD?

I want to delete the first two partitions (a 243 MB Linux swap partition and a 5.87 GB root partition). Problem is, every time I deleted them, Windows would also delete Drive G: and H:, leaving only drive F: intact. Deleting the two Linux partitions using GParted from a Live CD also gave the same result. I've attempted this multiple times now and, after each attempt, TestDisk always managed to recover all the deleted partitions.
Any ideas on how to delete these two partitions without affecting the rest?
I have a 230GB hard drive wich I don't know it's name.I have a 207GB windows vista partition and the rest of it is for linux (Ubuntu).Today I decided giving it all space to Ubuntu Linux ,but didn't want to lose all my data from the windows partition.I thought that by deleting all things except the folder with my data and leaving enough space to shrink and make enough room for another partition to put my data folder.The logic is that i could then format that partition wich previously was windows and use it all for ubuntu without losing data.After having ubuntu installed i could copy my data folder to /home and then delete the previous partition and make /home bigger.The problem is that after i freed the space,when using Gparted to shrink it says that the partition has bad sectors or the filesystem has problems and so it can't do some operations.
What could have went wrong?It told me to do chkdisk but as i deleted all the windows files and i can't boot into it anymore.I used the vista dvd to do that.I rebooted 2 times as it says and after that when trying again nothing changed.I tried to use ntfsresize with the --bad-sectors argument and also the -f argument but it's useless.At the end it says it won't do anything until the ntfs filesystem get repaired.Or it says it is too risky to continueIs there any way i could do some superforce command to resize it without losing data?Please don't tell me to put it on an external storage cause i have like 70GB of datas to save...no i don't have an external hardrive
After running photorec I went from having ~30 gb of free space to having 0 bytes of free space. I have deleted all the results of photorec and various other large files and removed them from trash but it still has not freed up any space. Also, my firefox no longer has back/forward functionality which I'm sure would be fixed by a reinstall but seeing as I have 0 space, I can't really do that. Any thoughts?

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

I've formated partition to empty - only erased information that partition is NTFS.
Partition data haven't been changed. So i think only little change to partition table is required.
How can i recover it?
I was installing windows vista on my computer, so I backed up everything to a external drive which was formatted with ext2. I then proceeded to install windows vista. When I got to the partition section I tried installing windows vista to my raid 0. When it didn't work I decided that I would delete all my existing partitions and create a new one. Well in my haste I accidentally deleted my ext2 partition from my backup drive that was still connected. As soon as I realized what I had done I shutdown the windows install and disconnected my external drive. This is the current state of my drive from parted:

I know that the drive only had one partition before and that it took up the entire disk and it was ext2 (maybe ext3).
A HP Netserver LP2000r, with original SCSI controller and HP NetRaid-2M controller, 3x 36GB Ultra3 HDD in RAID5, Debian (sarge/etch), has crashed after 992 days without reboot. From all that I can see, a hardware failure, most likely with the memory. The HP Diagnostic tools cannot find any problem, but everytime I boot into Knoppix, I get between 2minutes and 2 hours of runtime, and then either a kernel oops or just a complete and sudden halt.
Well, the box has earned its money. However, there is some data on the drives that I need to recover (yes, I have beaten myself up properly about not backing up that data, don't even go there !). There are three partitions: sda1 is /, sda2 is swap and sda3 is a LVM volume with 3 logical volumes on it. As far as I can tell, the hardware defect must have been creeping in and has made a total mess of the inodes in all these partitions.
After booting into Knoppix, I can restore the volumes using pvscan, vgscan, lvscan, vgcfgrestore and vgchange. If I try and mount them: mayhem. So I try and check them, using fsck.ext3. All sorts of interesting nonsense, such as a completely empty inode 11 (the first inode) and then obviously from there on all else is pointless. I tried using debugfs, but the information on what to do with it is somewhat spurious.
P.S.: Tomorrow I will go and get myself a 16GB Flash Drive and then hopefully I will be able to dump the partitions one by one onto that drive and transfer the images onto a different computer for analysis and data recovery.
I moved my NTFS partition with XP and after restarting got the grub> prompt. ls,grub-install and mount are not recognized. find /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,2,a)
how can I recover? my *nix is osol and I have grub 0.97 (legacy)
I have both a osol and ubuntu cds, but it seems I should be able to load from the grub prompt.
I've been using Linux for a few years and have managed to find what I need searching (including this great site) until now. I have managed to mess up a substantial partition and don't want to possibly make a bad situation worse by bungling around an area I know next to nothing about. I'll try to explain it fully.I finally built a new PC (750GB internal HDD, 4GB RAM). I'm used to Kubuntu so I installed that (10.04 x86_64bit); partitioned sda1 1GB swap / sda2 OS 20GB ext4 / balance sda3 home ext4 for time being. Everything runs sweet. My old PC (very, PIII, but more recent 500GB internal HDD) partitioned sda1 486.31MB swap / sda2 OS 22.82GB ext4 / balance (442.46GB) sda3 home ext3 (ext3 because /home was inherited from an earlier install prior to Kubuntu going ext4). Old PC was having PSU prob. I don't have an external HDD or any other large HDD and not enough DVDRs for 280GB or so of data current in /home. So I backed up what I could risking the old PC working long enough. Got the critical stuff, business etc. There remained some 150GB or so, years of pictures, videos, info on car repairs etc (some but by no means all on semi annual DVDR backups). Free space current in new PC's /home partition ~500GB. So I took out the HDD from the old PC and put it in the new in order to copy the remainder then use it in the new PC; made sure BIOS of new PC indicated this 2nd drive did not have boot priority. The correct install booted.
To my surprise (maybe not yours?) during boot with zero indication, Kubuntu decided to use the 2nd HDD's /home partition for its new 442.46GB swap partition instead! I was horrified. I unmounted it immediately but... according to GParted the partition with all those files to copy is now:/dev/sbd3 File System: unknown 442.46GB Used: --- Unused: --- no flags
I was surprised by kubuntu changing its partitions without input and assuming a ext3 file system on a secondary HD for a 442.46GB swap partition. But, mistake's on me. Call it a lesson. Now I need to know more but don't want to experiment unduly on this drive and possibly make things worse: What should I do next?
I accidentially overwrote the first 1M of my harddisk on linux (using dd). So, the partition-table is gone. I can still access all partition (except the first one) using /dev/sda2 (and so on), so the data is still there. I only need the partition boundaries to restore the table. How can I do this? The Linux-Kernel must still know them because all mount-points still work. fdisk -l /dev/sda doesn't work because it acctualy reads the partition table.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation. I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder. now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder).
PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder.

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
If i have ubuntu dual-booted with windows already, and wanted to get rid of windows entirely, how would i delete its partition?
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is frustrating, I just can't wipe out the HD on the Fedora 13 live CD.. When I open up Disk Utility, it says something about the resource being busy.. It seems that it's the swap partition, the live CD is using the swap partition, and I just can't wipe out the HD.On Ubuntu live CD, I can go to GParted, and tell the swap partition "Swap Off", but I can't seem to do that here.. I tried to add Gparted while in the Live session, but the Authentication button does nothing at all..
Is there a terminal command to turn off the swap partition so I can format the HD completely?(I'd also like to try and install without LVM, for my laptop it's just overkill and wastes HD space).
I have a Windows Vista machine on which I selected "utilize free space on selected drives" to install Fedora 9 temporarily. Now, however, I'd like to remove the Fedora installation. I've tried using fdisk from the Fedora 9 rescue mode on the install DVD, but I seemed to merely mess up the cylinder boundaries. When I boot from the DVD, before entering rescue mode it says that /dev/sda contains a looped partition, and asks whether I want to reformat it (completely removing everything on the drive).
How do I remove the "looped" Linux partitions? (I cannot login to Windows, so any GUI applications won't be any help.)

I want to delete the Windows XP partition to free up space on my hard drive, but I'm afraid that it will corrupt or delete the LILO bootloader and prevent me from loading either of the other 2 operating systems.What should I do? Can I save and restore the bootloader and its configuration somehow?
I tried to install ubuntu on exernal drive and install grub there. But no joy. I had to do on primary master.
Now grub shows 2 linuxes on machine, which is a pain, since I cannot boot this other install on external from grub.
I am trying to delete and create that partion with gparted. But won't delete it, even after unmounting it.
I have two 500gb hdd. One of them crashed (the one which i used windows on) and its now getting sent to the warranty people. On my other hdd i do not have any OS installed, it's just one 500gb NTFS partition, i have there just some personal important stuff. I want to install ubuntu 10.10 x64 on it. I understood that when i will do this, from the available free space it will be created a new partition.
I have tryed to get along with linux a few years ago and i failed... Can you tell me if i will be able to delete the partition ubuntu is creating and merge the unpartitioned space back to NTFS without formating the drive? There is one directory in /oracle partition in test server which i use to delete that dir after copying in the same location with diff file/dir name. Like this i did so many times.evrytime i m deleting but the /oracle partition space is reducing by 1.5 or 2gb after deleting dirs of 80gb.Directory size is 80GB and partition size 400GB.plz let me knw with steps, is it requires to do De-fragmentation?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again.Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.

Grub immediately takes over upon booting but doesn't detect any partitions. I tried booting from an opensuse cd and changing the boot order priority, but grub still comes up. I don't have a windows 7 installation disc

I looked it up, put some code into a LiveCD terminal, and I thought it worked. But now, I says that I definitely need to put in a Windows 7 CD and do that MBR fix method. I did not own a Windows 7 CD; my laptop came with it pre-installed, and I have no recovery partition anymore.
I'm pretty new to linux, and I'm facing a problem with an ext3 partition on an external hdd. I'm not sure whether the hdd is about to crash or not, however I've had a few problems accessing it in the past.
I have a second external hdd, the exact same drive, that has the exact same partition configuration, but holds different data. So, my question is; is it possible to backup the partition structure of the second working drive, and using this information to rewrite the partition structure of the failing hdd without damaging the data stored on that drive?
i built a rpm package, which i figured out later that i wont be needing, so i deleted the rpm file and also the build package put together they were abt 5.8 GB... but my system monitor shows that only 700MB of space is available the 5.8 GB is not visible but its gone
