Ubuntu :: Recover Partition And Grub Lost From Windows?

Dec 8, 2010

I installed Ext2fsd from windows XP because I needed access to a text file on my ubuntu install. However, it didn't work because the drive is ext4 and all it listed was the root folders (/home, /var etc..) nothing any deeper.

I closed the app and continued working in windows.

Today I went to start my computer and it loaded the grub-rescue> prompt. I immediately tried to run "help" to find out what happened, however, grub reported the command as unknown.

I then ls and got a partial listing of the partitions.

Code:
(hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,1) (fd0)

So what do I do? How do I recover my linux partition? If the partition is bad - then how is the bios able to find the grub-rescue> prompt?

Ubuntu :: Grub - Lost My Windows Partition - Can't Find Menu.lst In /boot/grub

Nov 1, 2010

I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

After "fdisk -l",

I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

SUSE :: Deleted Grub Loader And Partition - Recover Boot To Load Windows 7?

Oct 25, 2010

I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.

It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.

I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!

Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?

I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.

Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)

I cannot get to a command prompt.

Ubuntu :: How-to Recover A Lost Partition

Nov 29, 2010

I need a way to recover my Windows partition that was completely repartitioned when I originally moved to Ubuntu.

When I first moved to Ubuntu 8.04, I somehow overwrote my Windows partition. It happened on a laptop and since then, I've purchased a new one so I can now go back and attempt to unzip the partition holding 10.04 and get to the files I had under Windows.

Ubuntu :: Possible To Recover Lost Partition?

Jun 14, 2011

I was trying to resize to the left the sdb5 partition where ubuntu is/was installed and things got messy. I lost the partition it was unallocated. Next "cleverly" used livecd and reinstall ubuntu (thinking it was just like a repair the system thing) but instead ubuntu install from new...all my data is lost...gone with the wind. I try sadly enough testdisk but it says partition corrupted impossible to recover. Now the whole disk shows as unallocated in gparted.

I am running ubuntu from a second hard drive and strange enough my windows 7 partition with files is save and sound. I wonder if there is anything I can do to recover my files (guess the enitre partition now is lost). I try photorec and no files were able to recover then try scalpel and it says files were not find or couldn't read the partition. Of course "cleverly" I didn't had a recent back up of my files. Now I cant access the new ubuntu partition that still in sdb5 at boot takes me directly to windows 7.

Ubuntu :: Recover Lost Data From NTFS Partition Using Testdisk/Photorec?

Mar 8, 2010

My main partition having all my data like movies, music, files, etc has become inaccessible. Its file system was NTFS. Due to some recent resizing using GParted, the partition as well as my WIndows 7 OS has become unbootable due to some errors. The data partition's file system has become unknown. I don't care much about the OS but I would like to recover my drive. I am trying to achieve this using Testdisk and Photorec but haven't met with much success so far. The main problem is I can see my partition and all my files through Testdisk but I am not able to copy them to another drive. When I try to copy the option I get is of copying them to the DVD and not to any other partition.

Ubuntu :: Recover Lost Data From A Wiped Windows 7?

Jul 18, 2011

I bought a new dell studio 1555 from best buy about a year and a half ago. Got the warranty because I have 4 kids and something is bound to be dropped, spilled or smashed at some point. True to my visions, something did get dropped smashed and spilled, and pennies got stuck in the dvd slot. So I took it in when the screen stopped coming on because of a loose connection in the hinge and they did apparently fix that problem, but also were benevolent enough to wipe out my entire hard drive, operating sytem and all, totally free of charge. I guess they figured since I like accidents so much, I would just LOVE having 18 months of data and programs disappear into thin air. I know all about how I should have backed it up, and I am not whining too much over this. I will roll with the punches. But there are just a FEW things on that hard drive I will really miss. Like a few crucial spreadsheets that I was not able to save to my external drive before the screen went south. Now that windows 7, I am not planning on missing at all. In fact I am loving running my new Ubuntu 11.04 from my usb and knowing that those idiots will not be able to screw this one up next time. But I would really like to be able to recover those files if I can. Is there any way to get those back? And I also cannot figure out how to find device manager. Do I have to install to hard drive to use that? I know these are all probably total newbie questions. But hey, i got here as soon as I could. Everybody has got to start somewhere.

Ubuntu :: Windows Partition Failed - How To Recover

Jan 23, 2011

Yesterday, my windows partition (in a dual-boot with windows7/ubuntu) failed, and in trying to fix that partition, I managed to mess up both, including the MBR and what not. I have been desperately trying to recover them, and believe there's a good chance of doing that as I haven't yet written any data since the crash.

On running testdisk, I have the following info about them:
Disk /dev/sda - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63, sector size=512
Disk /dev/sda - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
1 P HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 191 89 26 3072000 [TOSHIBA SYSTEM VOLUME]
2 * HPFS - NTFS 191 89 27 5274 254 63 81668827 [S3A6747D002]
3 P Linux 5275 0 1 29494 254 59 389094296
4 E extended LBA 29494 254 60 30401 254 63 14570959
5 L HPFS - NTFS 29495 0 1 30400 254 54 14554881 [HDDRECOVERY]

I am quite sure that the data I'm interested in recovering is in the partitions found on rows 2 and 3 (which correspond to my old windows drive c:, and my shared data drive, respectively). Currently, I am running off ubuntu that's living on my portable harddrive, and system> Disk Utility shows the internal (messed up) harddrive as one unpartitioned unknown mass of 250gb, with "bad sectors".

General :: Lost Partition - Grub Loading But Can't See LVM Drive

Aug 22, 2010

I've resisted the urge to post for as long as I could. I use these forums quite often in finding answers to the numerous linux questions that I've had & found it to be a great resource. For some reason after an innocent reboot of my Fedora 12 Core system, GRUB decided it would no longer load the O/S. I was just getting a flashing _ in the top left of the screen. I thought there must be a problem with the partition table & have used the systemRescueCd to run testdisk (I have made a copy of the disk first to an image file using dd - don't worry I made sure I got the commands around the correct way!).

testdisk shows that I have a partition which is bootable & Primary, which appears to be the grub partition (I can list the files in test disk). However when I search the disk I get the following after it has found a couple of partitions. (it is an 80Gb disk)

Ubuntu :: GRUB Lost Sight Of Windows XP?

Sep 1, 2010

I did a dual boot install of Ubuntu 9.10. After that, when I rebooted my Windows XP was gone? I did update-grub and still nothing. I popped in the GRUB Super boot Disk 2 and browsed around, I think i found it but it says "Error: Invalid Signature". Iv googled and havent found a solution to this yet.

I booted off a XP CD into the recovery console, it sees my Windows partition and lets me get into it and browse all my files. So I know its there. I then tried fixmbr then fixboot and now all it loads is my Recovery Partition. I booted up SuperGrubDisk again and same results, it just sees my Ubuntu. I reinstalled grub and back to square 1. Then I tried a checkdsk /r and tried it all over again. Nothin'.

I have some encrypted files on my drive using EFS....i guess it would be ok to loose them, but I put a lot of work into them..

how I can "wakeup" my XP again?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 - Lost Grub Legacy In Windows Reinstall

Jun 19, 2010

I dual-boot ubuntu 9.04 and windows 7. I recently reinstalled windows, and it wiped grub-legacy off of my MBR. Reinstalling grub shouldn't be tough, right, especially with clear instructions? Anyway, I can't get anywhere with the official instructions here: [URL]. The first issue is that the current live CD has no program "grub" in terminal. I dug up an old live cd, but I couldn't get anything with the directions:

Find where Grub is. If this gives a few different answers then you will need to find the correct one, perhaps by trial-and-error.
find /boot/grub/stage1
That command didn't find anything, nor did some similar commands found on google.

So I'm really at a loss. What should I do?
-Can I install Grub 2 on my MBR? Will that work with 9.04?
-Can I access my 9.04 install, copy files to Windows, and then just format the partition and clean install 10.04?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows Entry In Grub After Update

Jul 9, 2010

Ubuntu's update manager recently updated the Grub menu.lst file. It let me decide if I wanted to keep my old menu.lst or the new one. After deciding that I was fine with the new one, I found out that I can no longer boot into Windows 7. I had previously edited menu.lst so that Windows would be at the top of the list, however, I didn't notice that this had put it into the automagic update area, and I realize now that I should have just edited what the default number was instead of moving around the entries.

Anyways, I can no longer access my Windows 7 OS via Grub, and I was wondering what sort of fix I can have for this. I've tried running update-grub, but it hasn't fixed the problem. The Windows bootloader is on the first partition of the only hard drive, as far as I can remember.

General :: Lost Windows Partition After Gparted Wiped Old One

Mar 21, 2011

I realise that this is not a pure Linux Q, but I am hoping for tolerance and even help! After removing the partitions (/,/home) that held an older Linux installation, gparted showed the original Windows XP partition followed by the new unallocated space. On rebooting, there was a Grub rescue error (text not noted, sorry). A live install running gparted shows a totally empty disk!

The removed OS was booted via Grub2 and I imagine that it is choking when there is no secondary(?) file to be found since it was vaped. I also imagine that this is a fairly straight-forward matter, something like replacing the MBR but I am so far from Windows these days that I am unsure how to progress with rescuing the partition. The machine has no floppy - that's how I would have initially booted it way back when. Is this something that I can do either through a Linux live distro or via a Windows CD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows 7 Boot Option In Grub - Error 12: Invalid Device Request

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

title=Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd0,6)
makeactive

When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?
