Well the title says it all. Royal screw-up! I accidentally formatted two Windows partitions inside a Pointsec encrypted hard drive using gparted from a liveCD (in USB). Is there a way to recreate these partitions? If not the whole partition, at least be able to recover everything inside My Documents.I ran TestDisk and it will not see any of the two partitions that existed in the drive.

I've been wanting this for several years - even going as far as trying to get a copy of CheckPoint. That's waht my organization uses on all Wintendo laptops and is required.

I had some major problems after the recent Ubuntu upgrade and had to boot from a live cd. I have a separate /home partition, but it was encrypted using the default install encryption in the 9.10 install cd. How can I get to my files so I can back them up?

I am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation. I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder. now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder).
PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder.
I just picked up a 1.5TB external drive. I want to wipe the NTFS partition (I assume that's what it is) that is there and replace it with an encrypted ext4 partition.
Is there a HOW-TO somewhere for this?
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Dummy me let root run out of space because I didn't know to use logrotate. I was able to compress the system logs but not before the damage was done me thinks; now the computer is unbootable. I booted from a LiveCD and got my old partitions mounted under /media/oldroot to try and recover files; however, I forgot that I had encrypted my home. I found [URL] and was following it; however, I seem to run into a bunch of path issues after I chroot.
The chroot command returns:

The su command returns:
-su: cut: command not found
-su: getent: command not found
-su: expr: command not found
-su: groups: command not found
Finally, the ecryptfs-mount-private command returns:

I have separate partitons for /, /home, /tmp, /usr, and /usr/local and bothered to mount the first 2. (If only I had been ambitious enough to create a /var). I was running Ubuntu 10.10.
I was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?
I tossed a 500GB hard drive into my machine (Ubuntu 64 8.10) so that I could back some files up. This drive when last used was part of a software RAID (no longer in use.) I deleted the partition that was on it, and tried to reformat using Gparted to ext3...but it won't work. The only error message I get is that it failed. Details do not provide any additional information. I went to the command line and attempted to mount it just to see what would happen, and I got this:

so, after long time of succesfull use of kubuntu, i encountered a 1st major disaster yesterday while using kphotoalbum. It has somehow frozen my machine in so mighty way, that it apparently corrupted a directory with majority of my pictures , which now appears to be empty .My home lies on a separate partition, its encrypted aand using btrfs and I am using kubuntu 10.10. So, could anyone give me some clues how to unencrypt my home partition, that i could obtain an image of partition or whatever else usable for photorec to check for pictures?
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently I was forced to hard reset my computer a couple of times (mostly out of frustration) and due to my idiocy i was confronted with the standard Kernel Panic message at bootup. I tried running an fsck from live cd which corrected a bunch of errors but to no avail (as far as getting rid of the Kernel Panic msg). I then tried to mount the filesystem by accessing it from live cd (and later even installed ubuntu on a small leftover partition to get rid of the annoying live cd lag) but it says that I don't have access to my home or root folder. Mounting from command line gave the same issue.
So now to the question. Is there a general procedure to access data in my corrupt filesystem if it is encrypted?
I upgraded from ubuntu 9.10 to 11.04. During installation (Natty) I chosen the option to encrypt the home folder. After a day the system crashed. It was showing that disk is having health problems. If I boot from live cd then i cant access the home folder. When I tried to mount the home folder, it says "Reading directory: input/output error"
Because I used Karmic without problem I reinstalled the Karmic, then I can mount the home folder, but cant access it as it was encrypted.Now Karmic is installed. I tried to boot from Live CD of Natty and tried to mount /home folder, it says some super-block issues.How to access the files in the home folder?
i am running xubuntu 9.10 and can't format any usb drive (tried few of them). The same issue i had with fluxbox mint 8 (based on ubuntu 9.10) I thought that my usb drives are dead, but after formatting it in windows xp, i could run from them any linux distro. I installed then mint xfce 6 (ithink based on 8.10) and crunchbang based on 9.04, and had no such issues. But now i am back on Xubuntu 9.10 and want to make all live usb within it. At the end of formating process i have message something like: cannot mount usb drive: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked. Of course, no drive is locked. After that i can start making installation usb disk, but after some percentage it reports some error, and of course, it does not work.

So I currently have an issue with the 10.10 (64-bit) installer in that it does not recognized the Crucial SSD drive I have installed on my box correctly (long story and ultimately a separate topic but if anyone is interested). Initially I thought it was an issue with the hardware and RMA'd the drive however now realize that the likely culprit is the Ubuntu installer itself.
In order to test the rest of the hardware while waiting for the RMA'd drive I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition on the box and thus have a working secondary partition that I can boot from. From within Ubuntu it seems I am able to access/format the SSD correctly (using gparted); it seems that it is only the installer that cannot handle the drive...
Is there a way that I can install Ubuntu on a second partition from within Ubuntu itself?
I logged in to Recover Mode ("Drop to root shell prompt") this morning to do something. Naturally, I wanted access to my encrypted home folder.
The README file says to run ecryptfs-mount-private. However, that command returns an error:
"ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly."
This cannot be correct, because if I log in normally, I get my home folder without any problem.
How can I access my encrypted home folder when I boot via Recover Mode?
I am pretty new to Ubuntu and am practicing on an old desktop as a file print and domain controller for a work from home business while I build and configure a Linux server. My question is as follows: I have a laptop running windows 7, my wife has a MacPro running Snow Leopard, the kids have desk top running Ubuntu 10.04, I have a 500GB additional disk in the spare desktop which I want to use as a netork drive that will:
1) Win 7 backup location from the Laptop
2) Store backups of large photoshop files and other graphicsy type stuff from my wifes macpro.
3) Act as a shared directory for all of us
4) Store large multimedia files, mpegs etc
What is the best disk partition format - Am I restricted to NTFS due to the requirements to store Win 7 Backup files Secondly can anyone point me in the direction of a URL for getting the Samba permissions sorted for Windows 7, The kids PC dual boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 Win XP is no problem to network but in Win 7 I can see all the shares in the network map but I always get permission errors both from the Ubuntu PC and Win 7 laptop. Most of the help files and manuals deal with 98/Me/XP and not windows vista / 7 that I can find.
A friend installed Lucid on his system that has three hard drives. For some reason it installed on his secondary, data drive. Now all his files are gone. Is there a utility out there that would enable him to recover any files from this formatted disk?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was reading another thread about someone with a bad partition table and I decided to join this forum. I'm not going to take any drastic actions with the partition (/dev/sda3) in question. I am going to wait for instructions on what to do first. I am not very good with Linux and need some hand holding. System: DELL 4550 Dual-Booted with XP and Ubuntu. Works OK, just no swap. Well, here's what I did: I deleted a partition for Windows XP Pro because it was a trial, and it ran out. I then decided to slide the swap partition for the Ubuntu Linux that I dual-boot into over. (If this was successful, I was going to try expanding the root partition to take up the unused space.) I used Gparted on a CD to do this, as I figured it was safe to do.
I now cannot mount the swap space at bootup (and have to go into a backup version of the OS), although I can use Gparted in Linux to execute the "swapon" command, and it appears that it worked because I now see "swapoff" as an option on the context menu. (I actually don't even need a swap partition, except to hibernate.) If I highlight the swap partition and click on "Drive" on Gparted's menu bar and select "Create Partition Table", it will erase all data on /dev/sda, so how do I fix the bad partition table non-destructively?
I usually repartition a disk by backing up, deleting the partitions, formatting them and repartition. I just did a 200 gig backup (so i am safe) and i want to join 2 (ext3) partition together, sdb1 (data4) and sdb5 (data5) into one big partition. Is there a way to do it without scraping the data in sdb5 (data5). It would save me from rewriting the data back to that new partition (200 gig is time consuming).
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor a while now, I have been using an older version of gparted (0.4.5) from an older bootable Linux disk to format my hard drives. The version included with Suse 11.4 (0.8.0) has given me a puzzle. I tend to create a number of partitions (3 primary, an extended, and a number of logical) on my disks. For some reason, version 0.8.0 seems to requires 1 mb of space between each partition, and 2-3mb of space at the end of the drive. With the older gparted, I could create partitions with no unused disk allocation. Is there some reason for this new behavior? Is there some way to format a drive with the newer gparted without unused space? I realize that 10-15mb of disk is fairly small, but I have this dislike of wasted space. The drives being formatted are SATA drives in the range of 250gb -750gb.

sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)
now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:

Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.

The latter fails with

I was given an Integral AES 256 bit encrypted usb drive. It isn't compatible with Linux which is annoying but i was wondering if i could format it and use it without the software? I have plugged it in and it comes up as a CD drive. I checked for it in Gparted but it doesn't show up there. Does anyone know how i could get the drive formatted? Just plugged in into a windows computer to see if i could format it there. Set it up but there is no option to format it upon right click of the drive.

To keep myself amused during the download I have been poking around in various documentation pages and came across one on ubuntu.com about backup. It points to some pages on Ubuntu One.
The tech specs indicate that communication to/from Ubuntu One use SSL. However, I do not find any information as to the actual storage of files on the Ubuntu One servers (the FAQ page seems to be down at the moment). Can anyone tell me if the files which are synced to the server are stored in an encrypted format on the server?
A friend accidentally did mkfs.vfat on my 1Tb ext. hard drive..It's now showing as 400 GB free where it was 10 GB previously and the remaining data is being shown as weird symbols and empty folders and yet it occupies more than 500GB..Any way to recover the data completely?

~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. I tried following the instructions from this link to add the 2nd drive:

View 3 Replies View Relatedsda2 and sda5 are the same partition. i set up sda5 because i wanted it to be ext4 just like sda1. i thought if i went ahead and formatted the second partition to ext4 it would just show up, automount and always be there. in my case it hasnt worked that way. is anything wrong with this, if so, how do i fix it?
