Ubuntu :: How To Install A Program For All Users

May 12, 2010

I bought QCAD after having spent more than a year with the community edition. The download just unzips and I just need to run a file to start QCAD. Problem is that unlike the community edition at the repositories, this one does not installs itself. The computer I have has four accounts set up. One is the administrative account which i use to install and perform maintenance. The other three are regular users (me, my wife and daughter). What I would like to do is install the software and then add an entry on the menu that propagates to all users. Most likely I would install it in the /opt folder. What permissions do I need to set?How do I create an entry in the Applications list that propagates to all users? The same thing happens with Lightscribe. It installed itself in the /opt folder but did not create an entry for any user.

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Program In Wine - Don't Have Permission

Apr 27, 2010

I have wine installed on Ubuntu 10.04. I am trying to get Quicken 2004 installed with the installation cd. I open the cd to go to the Install.exe file. Right click on the that file and tell it to: Open with wine windows program loader. I get the following window:The file '/media/QW04BASR1/install.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.Ok, I go to read about executable bit. Looks like I need to change the permission of it. Won't let me do it. Says:Sorry, could not change the permissions of "install.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system Ok, look up and see that it is a read only. Click to change that to the only other option: Read & Write. What do I need to do here? I have never had this problem installing Quicken in wine before using previous versions of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install Downloaded Program

Jul 10, 2010

I am in the process of moving all my data from Windows to Ubuntu. So far everything has gone well and I am very impressed with Ubuntu and regret not doing this years ago.

One program is giving problems. It is a program called Sharescope and I pay a subscription for it and it runs in my Windows partition. I downloaded Wine and then downloaded Sharescope three times but when I click to install it comes up with the following message;

Archive: /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE
[/home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE]

End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE or /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE.zip, and cannot find /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE.ZIP, period.

I contacted Sharescope and they said it was a permission issue in Ubuntu. Is there any way to install this program or will I have to work with it in Windows?

General :: Can't Install Updates With Apt-get Program Ubuntu 9.04

May 1, 2010

My update manager is alerting me of new updates to be installed and when I try to install them with apt-get, I receive this error message:

ronin-machine1:~$ sudo apt-get install updates
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package updates

This is the first time I've ever encountered problems updating. I tried updating apt-get thinking maybe this was the problem:

sudo apt-get update

It was successful but it wasn't the problem. I tried Google but the info I could find related to not being able to install specific software. I also tried rebooting my computer just as a last resort and that didn't do anything either.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Install The Usb Modeswitch Program?

Jan 11, 2010

i've recently bought a ZTE MG880+ modem of reliance and since then i'm trying to establish a net connection in 9.10 but failed. As i was searching for a solution i came to know about wvdial and usb modeswitch;i dwnlded both the programs in XP and installed only wvdial because i couldn't install the usb modeswitch program. But still i was able to modeswitch with the following procedure,-

note down the idvendor & idproduct with lsusb
sudo chmod 777 /lib/udev/rules.d/61-mobile-action.rules
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/61-mobile-action.rules
changed the default idvendor and idproduct with my own e.g 0x19d2:0xfff5
saved the file in downloads folder with name 90-mobile-action.rules
moved the file to /etc/udev/rules.d folder
reboot

After rebooting when i again plugged in the usb modem the lsusb command showed that idvendor:idproduct=0x19d2:0xfffe.So i think that mode switching is done but still i'm unable to connect to internet
