I didn't know how to make it fit. Basically, every time I try to install an application through the Ubuntu Software Center, I get an error that says installing the application would require the installation of packages from an untrusted source.

Hi, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal, right?). Switched from Vista a few days ago and I'm already loving it! Feels like I'm using a powerful machine again instead of some rusty, buggy contraption. Anyway, just installed MATLAB off a CD. Installation went fine and program seems to be working on par as far as I can tell (apart from that it crashes when I try to load a .fig, but can get around that).
However, it is not showing up in the Software Centre, even though it appears to be in the applications folder. Attempts to keep it in the launcher bar fail - it stays there but clicking on the icon doesn't do anything. Don't want to have to go the applications folder every time I want to run MATLAB...

Is it possible to configure Ubuntu to allow a user to only install from the software center and not gain any other admin privileges? I have enabled dpkg, apt-get and synaptic through visudo and I can install from there but the software center still prompts for my admin user's password. Just to be clear: it is not prompting me for the user's sudo password but for the password of the account that was created during installation.
I basically want to let users install anything they like through the package managers but not do any other root stuff (like sudo rm -rf /).

So apparently I've got a broken dependency and Ubuntu can't handle it itself. This is the error message I get when it fails to repair.

How can I go about fixing this? I can't use the software center until the error is cleared.... :[

I can get update manager and some application from the software center to work, but several of them show a "no Internet connection" pop-up followed by "check your Internet connection". If it's any help some of the application that will not install, I tried first to install from playdeb. In addition, playdeb seemed to have issues when I tried to setup installation for it. I can't even get application to install from their website either.

However, whenever i then go to system -> preference -> appearance ->effects and select anything other than none, it seems to turn of metacity and give me this "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." then i click the "no i don't want to keep these settings" and it goes back. The windows have borders with the buttons again. also after installing ccsm i start it from system -> preferences and nothing happens. it just loads a while then stops.

I seem to have caused a problem with the software center in Ubuntu 10.10. When I pick out a piece of software and click 'install' I see it doing something (CPU goes up etc.), but the usual "fill in your password" window doesn't pop up and after say 10 secs the 'install' button in the software center returns to its normal state, i.e. as if I hadn't pressed it yet at all.
I am afraid this is related to a manual install (i.e. through apt-get in a terminal) I did some time ago (I was following an online tutorial to get DVD playback working properly) that probably went wrong (the installation process did get stuck at some point, when it hadn't progressed for a long time (>1 hour) I saw no other option than to quit the terminal). I don't remember exactly what packages I was trying to install though.
What would be the best way to get software center going again?

On some but not all of the apps listed on the Ubuntu Software Center, I can see the app and select it, but after I click the arrow that points right that should take me to the screen that describes it and allows me to install it is blank. The tabs at the top say that I am at the right window but nothing is there. Is there a way I can make that work?

Okay so I have now run into my first problem I cant seem to find a solution to.
I have downloaded a .deb file and discovered that you can run them through Ubuntu Software Center to avoid using the terminal. It seems to me that you can even do this if the program is not a part of the Software Center listed programs.
So this is what I did and it now says that my program has been installed.

I am trying to install several of the packages listed in the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from the Ubuntu SoftwarecCenter. I get the error message: "The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources."
How can this be...they are in the repository. Doesn't that mean they are authenticated?
By the way, under sources, I selected "Server for the United States".
What can I do to fix this?

I installed OpenSuse 11.4 Gnome on my Toshiba laptop. A couple of things i noticed while trying the live CD first is that the file manager recognized my NTFS partitions and after I installed I expected it to do the same. Also, while installing I thought I selected a secure logon with username & password. After installation it boots right into the desktop GUI. I haven't had a lot of time playing with OpenSuse yet and I have browsed through some threads and I couldn't find a way to configure a secure logon and do I have to mount the Windows partitions in the Command Line or is there a tool I can use in the control center?

Yesterday, I made a clean install of 10.10 (64 bit). Among others, I installed World of Goo from a .deb file, and it worked fine.
Today, I wanted to install Skype from the .deb file. When I double-click the file, I get a "wait" cursor for ~20 sec, then nothing happens. When I try to start Software Center from the Main menu, I also get the Wait cursor and then nothing happens.
I started software-center from the terminal and the software center opened, despite some warnings in the terminal. I could install some random application from the list. Then I tried to start
Code:
And the software center window showed, with Skype selected. When I clicked Install, there was an error message. Despite the "no such a file or directory" part, I am sure that the file name is correct (I tab-completed it).
This is the error message I received when I tried to install:
Code:
Here are the warnings I received when I started the software center:

I'm having trouble with Yast, I noticed today that I can't open the control centre from the desktop (along with install/remove software) when opening from the command line I get. the following output:
** (y2controlcenter-gnome:9050): WARNING **: error accessing /desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_command_line [Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)]
Yast2 control centre opens, but none of the options load when selected. I have tried updating everything through Zypper which didn't work. (aka zypper ref/up etc). Then I tried removing yast and installing it again. When I did this (and downloaded the Yast control centre again the above errors, reappeared.
