I have this flash drive that I recently reformatted. Before when I mounted it a little icon of the flash drive would pop up. I saved the .ico file that contained the image before formatting and placed it back on the drive. Now all I get when mounting it is a generic sort of icon not the image of the particular drive. How do I get it to display?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, and now I'm experiencing some problems with the displaying of panels and icons that I'm hoping someone can help me to fix.
Situation: Running 11.04 in latest virtualbox (4.06, with guest additions installed) on a macbook pro running snow leopard (10.6.7). I'm in gnome classic (no effects) because I'm not yet used to gnome 3 and compiz doesn't run all that well for me in this virtualization set-up. But the problem, described below, is consistent from gnome 3 to classic (with effects) to classic (without effects).
Problem: When I first log in after a reboot, everything looks great in the default settings (ambiance theme, I think), but after ~ 15 seconds, the panels and icons revert to an odd looking theme that I don't particularly care for. And trying to change the settings in the "Appearance" preferences is of no help, i.e., I can change the themes, but the panels and icons remain in a stock, old-school gnome-ish theme.
I've recently started using burg (a modification of grub that shows pictures instead of/with text), and I really like it for booting into Ubuntu and Vista. After many failed attempts of trying to get OSX on my PC, I'd like to try Macbuntu (a theme for Ubuntu that makes it look like a Mac). Unfortunately (fortunately?) my parents have taking a liking to Ubuntu and hate when I change anything, so installing Macbuntu would be a big no-no. I made a copy of Ubuntu and will put it on another partition of my hard drive, but I don't want to have two Ubuntu pictures when burg boots up. Are there any bootup lines I can put inside burg.cfg to fool it into loading an osx picture, then loading Ubuntu?

Only when there are no known wireless AP around. if there is a previously connected wireless in the area I will see the icon but if I'm at a new place it just won't show up. nm-applet is still running, I tried to kill and restart it but the icon still doesn't show .

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

I installed flash player for my daughter and lost all my icons. I did " sudo gnome - panel restart and got them back , All but the wireless icon and I do not have a clue how to get it back. I also need to know how to get my pc to see the ubuntu os on the same network and how to view its traffic as part to police what my daughter is doing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.
Is Ubuntu like windows and can you download Ubuntu to a flash drive or external hard drive and if so what kind?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen viewing videos on [URL], most other websites, and when trying to run certain flash games, the flash applet will not display (though the audio will play). Instead of displaying the flash applet, there will be a grey box where the flash video or applet would normally be.
This problem occurs on Firefox and Chromium, but not on Opera.
My Specs are as follows:
Distro: PCLinuxOS 2010 (32-bit)
flash-player-plugin: 10.1-2pclos2010
firefox: 3.6.6-1pclos2010
swfdec has never been installed (to my knowledge)
I did a lot of investigating about the problem but have turned up no solutions thus far. Here are my results. Flash videos and applets which allow access to the settings menu (like ..... played from their website) do not display, however flash videos and applets which do NOT allow access to the settings menu (including ..... videos embedded in other websites) WILL display. Reinstalling flash-player-plugin and firefox through synaptic does not solve the problem (though note that PCLOS works with rpm files, not deb files. apt4rpm does not support the remove --purge operation, however reinstalls are said to overwrite custom configs with stock ones.) Creating a new firefox profile and/or starting FFox in safe-mode does not solve the problem Creating another user and running FFox from that user will properly display flash videos Comparing default plugins between my main user and new user shows that there is no difference. So this likely rules out a defective extension or plugin binary. Deleting ~/tmp/plugtmp* folders when FFox is closed does not solve the problem. Removing the ~/.macromedia and ~/.adobe folders does not solve the problem. (have checked permissions between the new test user and main user, and they are equivalent) Downloading libflashplayer.so from the Adobe website and copying it to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins has no effect on the problem.
I'm thinking that there might be somewhere else that flash stores configurations for my user, and that maybe the settings there are corrupted and would need to be purged. However frantic googling has turned up nothing useful so far.
i would like to know how i can put a shortcut from my hard drive (the internal one) one my gnome desktop (like in mac os x). if possible it would be nice if i also could see the space / remaining space all the time.
i tried to create a shortcut from filesystem, but right click and send to desktop does not work. also pressing ctrl+shift and dragging the filesystem symbol to the desktop does not really work.

i'm using karmic. today i mounted a new hard disk, 1 Tb, as per the instructions i found in the wiki. first of all i wish to express my gratitude to all who contributed there. the instructions were most helpful and everything went fine. my new drive can be accessed for both read and write and automounts like the good drive it is.
however, there is this this icon for the new drive on my desktop. is there a way to get rid of it? i can access the drive perfectly well through the places menu. i like my desktop clean...
I've some icons of mounted devices on my desktop. I want to display only some of them which I need. All drives are mounted automatically while booting or by scripts while logging in.For example: I've 4 mounted devices and 4 icons on my desktop and I want to have 4 mounted devices but only 2 icons.There is possibility of hiding all of icons in gconf, but I want to hide only some of them.Is it possible?
View 4 Replies View Relatedsince some update to the latest Flash, I've been getting a weird issue. If I'm watching a flash video in fullscreen (via firefox) and hit "esc" to leave full screen, about 20-40% of the time it will screw up the monitor's display of everything. The entire screen gets weird white and colored pixels randomply all over the screen (see the attached picture). Restarting is the only thing that fixes this. I tried logging out and back in but the issue remains. I have two questions:
1. How do I fix this without a restart?
2. What could be causing this?
I'm running Kubuntu and have tested flash video sites with firefox, chromium and rekonq. I have installed all the available packages from Software Management but flash videos still don't display correctly. All get is a small rectangle of video on the bottom left hand side of the video box (which is otherwise grey).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.
I tried this:
The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way:

Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~
Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?
installing a Linux distro on an old mac to make a simple desktop home computer details below.The Scenario: I am trying to breath a couple more years of life into a computer illiterate friend's Mac G4 [POS] computer, it is a paper weight but all he needs is a basic desktop and an web machine and he can't be made to buy a new one unless all other options are exhausted.
The computer: Is a Mac G4 power-PC architecture, 450 MHz, 18 GB HDD, 1024 Mb ram ugly little thing that was gotten for free it currently has mac OS 10.2 [unsupported] and newer OS-X (he is more familiarized with Mac) don't run on power-PC. Currently web pages don't display correctly, flash and other plug-ins and web scripts don't operate and it is very clunky with software bloat.
My solution? Is to install Linux so he can have a trim clean operating system. Ubuntu 10.04 [community ppc variant] runs off a live CD but is dead slow on account of the low processor power and I was unable to get gnash to run flash video a necessity as Adobe has abandoned power-PC, I suspect the gnash error is between chair and keyboard, advice is welcome. I would like to install a distro more suited to this system currently I am looking at mintPPC but can't quite follow the installation instructions what is meant by Debian squeeze the download link gives me a mini.iso is this the same thing? Also clarification on the terminal commands would be of help. Advice on a different distro is also welcome preferably one with an all in one installing process rather than the mint, Debian, Ubuntu multi-part thingy that mintPPC is; it just needs to be power PC compatible and able to run on a few hundred MHz maybe there is an easy way to put LXDE or Xcfe on a more popular Disto? As for me: I am a new Linux convert, discovering the glory this past July and am still learning my way around I am computer literate and somewhat savvy but I am not a tech head and I HATE working on them I can and do it but I don't like it and I am often hampered by ignorance of the latest new/trends and an acute allergy to Macs and Apple products in general.

I have an external CD/DVD usb drive and as soon as I insert a disk (I've tried both CD and DVD), the drive icon disappears (unmounts?).I thought it was a bus power issue because it is a mini laptop (Asus Eee PC). This small/slim external drive has two USB cables, one for power and one for power/data. So, I plugged the power cable into my nearby Windows desktop computer and just the power/data into the Ubuntu PC.

After booting, I notice that the harddrive onto which I have it installed is not shown as a choice for me to view the contents of. I made it as part of a 750GB drive I have, but that drive does not show up in the list of available drives. There are other programs and files on there I would like to access. Is there a way to force it to be shown?
So i have a 16Gb Flash Drive and well i was wondering if i can make my ubuntu bootable from my flashdrive. SO if i go somewhere i have my Ubuntu with me with the programs installed in it. SO can i do this on my FlashDrive? if so how?

The reason I asked is I used cd-writing programs (Brasero, k3b, etc) for music cds to rip into lossless formats (AAC and FLAC), and it sometimes does not come out right from ripping. And thought writing to the flash drive would get rid of those little errors in the songs since there are no moving parts..
