Software :: Ubuntu Default Media Player - Video Extremely Choppy
Jul 11, 2011
i just installed ubuntu, latest version. i accepted the default media player. when i had windows installed, i was able to play videos at any level without any problems. the video player played very smooth whether it was in ..... or any other site. i took windows off, installed ubuntu, and now, the video is extremely choppy. the audio is fine, but the video is like it is playing 1 frame a second, instead of 30 frames a second. is there a better media player than the default? is there a setting i can adjust, like a buffer or something? i think the default is rhythmbox music player? for the video.

Streamed videos on various Web sites are slow and choppy for me. The problem seems to be a cross-browser issue, today I did an informal test of various sites I frequently use on both Mozilla Firefox and Chrome. The results of my informal test are below, and as you can see they are mostly the same for both Firefox and Chrome.
Google Chrome-
You tube-- no problems once video loads, but loading is slow
Daily show-- very slow loading, sound ok, video extremely slow, choppy, unwatchable
ESPN--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy
eHOW--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy
Mozilla Firefox
You tube-- no problems but sometimes slow loading
Daily show-- a little slow loading but sound and picture ok
ESPN--sound ok but picture very choppy
eHOW--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy
Other data:
Ubuntu 10.04
Toshiba Satellite A100
432.8 MiB memory;
Intel Celeron (R)M: 1.40 GHz.

I've been browsing through the forums and tried several things, but I haven't found a solution to my problem yet. I have an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop, with an NVIDIA GeForce 7000 M graphics card. For a year I've been using Ubuntu, and with all the versions I've had, through Gutsy to Lynx, I've always found that 3D graphics are extremely choppy. I wouldn't say they are slow...it's more like they move for a couple of seconds, then stop, then move again, then stop. I didn't really care, because I hardly play games: I had initially noticed it trying to get Warcraft 3 to work on Wine, which obviously is an old game, and it runs perfectly on windows...I thought it was just a problem of Wine. But now I've installed Celestia and Flightgear, and with both of them I have this same problem. Flightgear is the worst, it's basically unusable.
I have done several things based upon what I read in the forums. I removed all the NVIDIA drivers, and manually installed the latest propietary driver 195.36.24. I turned off all my desktop effects. I turned on Sync to Vblank to see what would happen. The desktop itself runs very quickly, even the Desktop cube effect, if I turn it on. Like I said before, the problem seems to be this jerkiness with games, with Celestia, and with flightgear. If I get this working, then I'll actually have Ubuntu working completely perfectly, for the FIRST TIME!

I am trying to set my default media player as MPlayer and selecting it with a right click in the menu, open with and then telling it to open with every time. It then opens it in MPlayer that time no problem but then next time I just double click on the file (or any file with same type) it just opens it with the original default player. I've tried using SMplayer as well as default and it does the same thing. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

Using Ubuntu 11.04, Totem (the default media player) is not able to seek (read: to forward or go back in time) whenever the file is read from a mounted ISO archive.
Whenever I extract individual media files from such an archive, the seek bar at the bottom works as it should. Thus, it can be ascertained that it is not the media files that are the source of the problem, here.
why that is doing so? Sounds like a bug, or what?

I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

It shows the video for a second then stops for 2 or 3 seconds and shows the video for 1 second and so on and so forth. Like the video is lagging or something. Anyone familiar with this problem. I also have dragonplayer and pitivi that I'll try also.

After seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?
Specs are:
-P4 , Dual Processors 3.2G
-2 Gig Ram
-Sata Drives
-Nvidia Fx5200 AGP 128 Ram
-Nic 100
Network speed 25 Mb/s down

Recently I decided to leave Windows and go with Linux. To try out I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and I can't be happier. I'm still getting used to how things work around here. Anyway I have an account at a website where I watch free TV, thing is the website uses Windows Media Player to stream the TV channels. I downloaded a bunch of plug-ins like VLC player, MPlayer and some other but all I get is the sound from the channels, no video other than some stupid graphics like when you play a song in Windows Media Player. So I wanted to ask you guys if you can help a brother out and please be as detailed as possible as to what to do because I'm still getting used to working in this environment.

All the three files I downloaded can not been played by Banshee. I got the message like below when I use search the code, so I installed all the Gstreamer I can find.
* Windows Media decoder (GStreamer, 32 bit, i586)
* Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer (GStreamer, 32 bit, i586)
During that I also did some update, but the problem still the same.

Since upgrading to Lucid, I haven't been able to play videos in Totem or VLC player, though I've got all the necessary codecs. The sound plays, but I just get a black screen with (very) occasional flashes of the image. However, I've found that SMPlayer DOES work.
Is there a way to make it the default, so that when I double-click the vids, it will fire up automatically, instead of my having to use right-click/open-with ? I've tried changing it in the multimedia tab of 'Preferred Software', but that doesn't seem to work.

I prefer VLC over totem, but I can't seem to make it the default. What I've tried:Right click on a video file, select "Open with Other Application..." select VLC, check "remember this application..." click Open. Then I close VLC, double click on the video file and... it opens in Totem.I checked out system>preferences>preferred applications, but under multimedia all I could select is music playback.

I just reinstalled my laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit and I'm using gnome 3.0, I can't figure out how to change the default video player to vlc though...I've tried going to 'Applications' --> 'System Tools' --> 'System Settings' --> 'System info'Here I can choose default programs, however vlc does not appear in the drop-down menu for videos. I do have vlc installed. I can choose to play videos with it when I right-click video files. But I'd like vlc to be the default so that I can just double click the video file and vlc plays it.It is a little bit confusing as totem is set as the default video player in the above-mentioned window, but when I double click a video file banshee starts

I was just wondering why Ubuntu, with the direction they are going in, would not choose XBMC as the default media player rather then Rythmbox. Anyone have ideas or thoughts? I was wondering if it had to do with licensing issues of some sort or if there is no reason. Personally I think with a little work XBMC would fit in with Ubuntu much better. XBMC it is a Media Center that is very nice in my opinion.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Dell Dimension 8400 with an ATI RV370 Radeon X300 video card and 512MB of Ram. The video seems to go very fast and skips. I followed the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto but still have the same issue. I have also read many posts but I have trouble understanding some of the responses. Could it be the low amount of RAM?

When I try playing DVD's in Media Player/Totem the video is choppy and does not sync with the audio. When I started looking at it in detail I see Totem is using up 95% of the CPU which kind of explains it doesn't it. But it still shouldn't be doing this. I then tried the same DVD's using Gnome Media Player and all is fine, perfect video/audio and normal CPU usage.
