Ubuntu :: How To Change Notification Popups
Jun 8, 2011
using the gnome3 team ppa, the gnome shell that gets installed on Ubuntu 11.04 still utilizes the default Ubuntu notifications (you know, those kind of annoying unclickable ones). Is it possible to change the notifications to use the tray at the bottom of gnome shell, for continuity's sake, as they do in Fedora 15.

Since I upgraded to 10.04, too many of the roll-over and popup notifications show as black background with white (or yellow) text. I find this unreadable. What controls this? How can I change it to normal black text on white background?

After much finagling, I've finally got Anthy setup and working. (This after four versions of Ubuntu )
But I have a slight problem. The cadidate popups are TINY on my 1080p 15" screen. I have to get right up to the screen to see the characters.
Is there any way of changing the size of these popups?

How to disable popups in Firefox by editing prefs.js file like the same way you do it by going to Edit-Preferences-Content and unselecting the Block PopUps box. I need to do this through a script thus i need to edit preference file directly.

Has anyone else using Kubuntu 11.04 with Firefox 4 noticed a black background underneath the speech bubble-looking dialogs that come from its top toolbar? Is anyone aware of an existing fix or workaround for this issue? It seems to not be a theme-specific bug (oxygen-gtk, qtcurve, and raleigh are all affected). Does it have anything to do with the black window-resize handle that you have to disable in .gtkrc-2.0-kde4?

Since reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10 and learning how to get the Notification Area working properly:
I've noticed an bunch-of-keys icon appearing intermittently in my notification area.
It appeared about 20 mins ago. I hovered the mouse over it and it generated the following text:
"Click on the icon to drop all elevated privileges"
I right-clicked on the icon, thinking I might learn something more about it. But it disappeared. No other messages were given.
It appeared again about five or ten minutes ago. I did not click on it. But it disappeared of its own accord after a minute or two.
What is this? Should I have clicked on it? What have I done? How can I get this bunch of keys under my control?

Is there any way to get an async notification (perhaps through something like a Linux message queue or Unix socket) when a DHCP client is either unable to renew its lease, or the address obtained changes from the previous value? I've got the ISC client and will dig into it to determine if it supports such a feature, but thought I'd ask here in parallel. (I'm trying to find out if there are any DHCP clients out there which already support this capability.)
If you're curious: We have an application where we're doing auto-registration of an IP camera to an external server. If the camera's dynamically assigned address changes, we need to restart the auto-reg state machine. I've seen implementations where a socket is opened and a SIOCGIFADDR ioctl used to fetch the IP addr, but I'd sure like to avoid polling like this if possible.

I have a relatively common problem, but I don't seem to identify it's source. I have a SAMBA server on my LAN to which there are mapped a few shares as network drives in windows xp (as Y: ) and mounted as CIFS in linux [as /y]. The problem is that every time I save a file [either windows xp or linux] on the mapped drive / mounted folder, our IDEs alert us that the file changes right after the save. I am running SAMBA 3.3.2.

There is an available update that I don't want to install. I've unchecked and then closed Update Manager, but the update notification icon is still sitting in my system tray, and, every time I re-open it, the update is re-checked and prompting me to download it. How do get rid of this particular update, aside from disabling the relevant ppa?

I have a scheduled backup that runs via anacron, and I currently am writing the output to a log file and mailing the output to root via local mail, see I have tried implemented a notification using libnotify, see Two problems:) I don't get a notification when anacron runs the backup script, I get a notification (sent to my primary user) when root runs a "test" notification script (I strip out the rsync command)) I don't think that this notificication will get delivered if another user is logged in when the backup script is run.I have become accustomed to the notifications that I get from evolution calendar, and I know that if the computer is off when the alarm is to be triggered I still get the notification next time I log in.For what its worth, I am running a Jaunty desktop computer for househould use, and there are two users.
/etc/cron.daily/backup:
#!/bin/sh

I've just realised that I've never been notified of updates. I've been checking manually. My parents came back from a three week holiday with their laptop and even they didn't get an alert, it seems. I know this was an issue on kubuntu. Does anyone know about this?

I am having some major problems with some popups and all of my notifications:
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
Video Card: ATI Raedon Mobility 7500 (open source drivers)
Running GNOME up to date version for 9.10, no compiz for now (on laptop)
The main problem is that, after updates, I have been getting popups and notifications that look like the attached... Which is problematic if you want to use popup/notifications such as those popped up.... These include Pidgin notifications, Sound Notifications, and whenever I attempt to open System Monitor, as can be seen from the snapshots.

I can't get rid of the "Mail Notification Properties" Window at startup. Every time the system comes up, there is the window for the settings. It's just empty as I don't want any more mail notifications than Thunderbird has.
I looked into the Mail Notification Properties and haven't found any settings to get rid of the window. And I disabled "Mail Notification" in System > Preferences.
Still this window keeps coming back over and over again.
It even survived the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. How can I get rid of it?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my iBook and for some reason the Notification Area (2.30.2) just stopped working. Like it shows it's there, yet I'm not seeing any icons or anything show up. Which is the only way I get online from it at the moment. Right now I'm typing this from someone else's laptop.

I use the Gnome Mail Notification Applet and have recently moved from a wired desktop machine to a wireless laptop.
The problem I have is that the Mail Notification shows an error because it tries to check mail immediately, the network hasn't finished connecting at this time though.
Is there a way to add a delay to this? I can't see one.
Or if anyone can suggest an alternative that is just as good (or better) and allows for a delay?

I use to have an applet in my Panel that prompted when I had Updates available for download. I believe it turned red when there were Important security updates available, and then disappeared or turned off when all the updates had been applied. That has completed disappeared from my Panel.
I thought I could add the Item back to my panel manually. I [<Right Clicked>Panel] and added the item Update Manager to it. Now I can click a box to install updates from the Update Manager but the item doesn't change color to RED when Important Security Updates are available and it doesn't turn off when everything is up-to-date. Instead it just shows a static square Box with a orange arrow pointing upwards... all the time. I have to periodically click on it to see if I need to install updates. How to I turn back on the automated Item so that I get the notifications when there are Important Security Updates and it then turns off after I install them.

Since when did the Rhythmbox notification icon get removed from the panel and merged in with the volume/sound notification icon in gnome? When I started using 10.10 Rythmbox had its own notification icon on the top gnome panel. now i have rebuilt my computer with 10.10 and the icon is gone but the Rythmbox controls are built into the sound notification icon.I did install the updates while the Ubuntu 10.10 install was running (there is an option to download and install update in the OS install wizard).I just want to know if this came down as some kind of update.

I was used to use the network and battery icon in the notification are (next to the sound and date/time). Now the bluetooth, battery, network, sound and envelope icon are visible, but there is no responds clicking on it.Pressing the mute-button on the keyboard changes the icon in the notification area. Also connecting a wireless network changes the icon. But to change network is becoming impossible by clicking the icon (and I do not know an other way to change it).The only thing I can think of was whitelisting all programs:Code:sudo gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"This was the only change I made.EDIT: Icons of external programs do respond.
