Ubuntu :: No Updates Available Notification In Panel

Jan 6, 2011

I use to have an applet in my Panel that prompted when I had Updates available for download. I believe it turned red when there were Important security updates available, and then disappeared or turned off when all the updates had been applied. That has completed disappeared from my Panel.

I thought I could add the Item back to my panel manually. I [<Right Clicked>Panel] and added the item Update Manager to it. Now I can click a box to install updates from the Update Manager but the item doesn't change color to RED when Important Security Updates are available and it doesn't turn off when everything is up-to-date. Instead it just shows a static square Box with a orange arrow pointing upwards... all the time. I have to periodically click on it to see if I need to install updates. How to I turn back on the automated Item so that I get the notifications when there are Important Security Updates and it then turns off after I install them.

Ubuntu :: No Notification Of Updates In Karmic?

Feb 28, 2010

I've just realised that I've never been notified of updates. I've been checking manually. My parents came back from a three week holiday with their laptop and even they didn't get an alert, it seems. I know this was an issue on kubuntu. Does anyone know about this?

Ubuntu :: Popup / Notification After Updates

Mar 18, 2010

I am having some major problems with some popups and all of my notifications:

Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
Video Card: ATI Raedon Mobility 7500 (open source drivers)
Running GNOME up to date version for 9.10, no compiz for now (on laptop)

The main problem is that, after updates, I have been getting popups and notifications that look like the attached... Which is problematic if you want to use popup/notifications such as those popped up.... These include Pidgin notifications, Sound Notifications, and whenever I attempt to open System Monitor, as can be seen from the snapshots.

Fedora :: Get A Notification That There Are Updates Available?

Mar 3, 2010

Is there a way to get a notification that there are updates available other than by using the Software Update GUI tool in my Gnome panelon Fedora 11 x86_64?

I ask this because the Software Update GUI is hopeless:

1) It cannot remember its window size. Every time I tell it to display available updates I have to drag the window big enough to see everything. Next time I tell it to show me the available updates it is back to the same small window size.

2) It hangs on "Cleanup" about half the time, leaving me to wonder if everything was actually installed or not.

3) Because Software Update is so buggy I generally use Yumex to do the update. After installing all the updated packages Software Update still says there are packages to install. Even then it doesn't get it right. Just now it said there were 16 packages. I used Yumex to install them. Now it says there are three available. But if I tell it to display them it shows all 16. Yes, I understand that it did not reset itself after I installed the packages, but it should have. Telling me there are three and then listing 16 tells me Software Update can't even count.

I do want something to appear in my Gnome panel when there are updates. It doesn't even have to have a built-in installer. I just want it to be reliable and accurate.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Notification Area (top Panel) Not Working?

Dec 19, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

I installed the Mac OS X Leopard theme. I didn't really like it so I decided to uninstall it and went to the default theme.

Now, whenever I try to minimize an application to the system tray, the notification area doesn't show any icons.

For example, I am running Tixati and I have set it up to hide it in the system tray when clicking the close button. Before installing the Mac theme, I had the Tixati icon on the top panel, where I could hover the pointer in order to check the download rate, or right-click it in order to configure it, but now, no icon is shown. I have added a new Notification Area applet but there is nothing shown there.

Ubuntu :: Messaging Menu In Notification Panel?

Sep 1, 2011

I have found some info on how to let apps put their icons in the notification panel. This involves using dconf-tools to whitelist some apps in the com.canonical.Unity.Panel gsetting. Firstly, I'm using ubuntu classic, not unity. I assume the above would still apply for my notification panel settings? Anyway, that is not my question. What I am wondering, The messaging icon in that panel, when you click it, you see things like "Setup Chat", "Setup Mail" etc. I don't plan on using empathy or evolution. In fact, I've uninstall them both and installed Pidgin instead. Is there a way to edit that messaging menu to either remove those 2 options at the top that are useless to me, or have them look at other IM/email clients instead of the ones they are expecting to invoke. E.g. "Setup Chat" is irrelevant, as I have already set it up. Since I don't have empathy installed anymore, clicking that option has no effect.

Ubuntu :: No New Mail Notification Using Evolution In Panel

I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.4. I have checked the properties in Mail preferences:
Code:
Play sound - yes
Display a notification - yes
Indicate new messages in panel - yes

Fedora :: Reboot Required Notification For Auto-updates

Feb 12, 2011

I'm currently administering an Ubuntu box remotely. It's set to install security updates automatically, and it notifies me when I log in via ssh whether it has installed an update which requires a reboot. For example, if it installed a kernel update a few days ago, the update manager will touch a "reboot_required" file in /var/run, and when I ssh into the machine today I'll be greeted with a "System restart required" message. Is there a similar functionality for yum or Packagekit?

Ubuntu Installation :: "encountered An Unrecoverable Error" / Getting A 'Crash Report' Notification On Panel?

May 23, 2010

I was intending to do a clean install of 10.04.I have downloaded and burned desktop-i386.iso.After booting from CD and selecting install from the menu, I get the splash screen for a few minutes, then black screen, then purple ubuntu screen, then the error message "the installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run etc.....".

I am thinking this may be related to ACPI, because when i 'Try Ubuntu without installing' it loads ok but I get a 'Crash Report' notification on the panel.

If again 'Try Ubuntu without installing' with F6 option "ACPI=Off" it loads up with no problem.

Another thing I noticed is that when I load with ACPI=OFF, my external drives automount, but if i dont turn ACPI off, and get the Crash report notification the external drives do not automount.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Ubuntu :: Community Repo Updates / Canonical Does Not Provide Updates For Warsow?

Dec 20, 2010

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:

"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

Ubuntu :: Removing Updates From Updates Manager List

Jan 29, 2011

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Ubuntu :: Automatic Updates - Not JUST Security Updates ?

Mar 25, 2011

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).

ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.

Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?

Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

Ubuntu :: After Adding 'killall Gnome-panel' To The Startup Applications Does The Panel Fail To Load Altogether

Dec 4, 2010

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.

Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.

I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Ubuntu :: Resolution - Top Panel Is Slightly Cut Off - Missing About The Top 20% Of The Panel

Mar 23, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:

HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050

When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.

I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.

Ubuntu :: Starting Empathy From Panel Freezes Panel?

Sep 25, 2010

So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).
