View 3 RepliesI have four different desktops, or workspaces, on here. I use one for a web browser, another for instant messaging, the third for Evolution, and the fourth for whatever, usually working in folders or word documents or whatnot. Whenever someone sends me a message on Empathy and I'm not focused on the chat window it dings. This is true for desktops 2-4, but when I'm on workspace 1 whether my web browser is minimized or not I don't get the notification sound, the persons message just appears as a notification panel.

as you can see, most icons are in the notification area, but skype and any programs with icons opened after appear always on top in the top left corner.
I've tried moving things about to no avail
Is there some kind of Ubuntu desktop application that notifies you when your WAN ip address has changed? I don't care about my LAN ip address. I need some kind of popup on the desktop when my ISP assigns the next dynamic WAN ip address.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was used to use the network and battery icon in the notification are (next to the sound and date/time). Now the bluetooth, battery, network, sound and envelope icon are visible, but there is no responds clicking on it.Pressing the mute-button on the keyboard changes the icon in the notification area. Also connecting a wireless network changes the icon. But to change network is becoming impossible by clicking the icon (and I do not know an other way to change it).The only thing I can think of was whitelisting all programs:Code:sudo gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"This was the only change I made.EDIT: Icons of external programs do respond.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10.
I installed the Mac OS X Leopard theme. I didn't really like it so I decided to uninstall it and went to the default theme.
Now, whenever I try to minimize an application to the system tray, the notification area doesn't show any icons.
For example, I am running Tixati and I have set it up to hide it in the system tray when clicking the close button. Before installing the Mac theme, I had the Tixati icon on the top panel, where I could hover the pointer in order to check the download rate, or right-click it in order to configure it, but now, no icon is shown. I have added a new Notification Area applet but there is nothing shown there.
When # shutdown +5 is run all the terminals (including pseudo terminals) are sent broadcast messages saying system is about to go down. Is it possible for user to receive this in the form of OSD or system tray notification so that he will be informed even if he is not running any terminal emulator or running it but minimized it and working with something else?

so i am about a week into using ubuntu. installed it on an old hp laptop that i pieced back together, using a broadcom wireless chip set. got all the drivers loaded and working, on any other network the notification area will display that it is connected no problem. but on my home network it will connect to the wireless but the notification icon will still look like there is no connection.
something that may be useful to know is that i originally plugged the laptop into the the router via wire to download the wireless card drivers.
I am using Kubuntu 10.10, and I have an Nvidia GT 320M with driver version 260.19.12 (updated from 260.19.09 i think) on my laptop. Suddenly, my desktop effects stopped working, and the window borders and window manipulation buttons are getting mixed up with everything else when i mouseover them or click on them (I guess some desktop effect I had is malfunctioning or not functioning at all?). Under System Settings -> Desktop Effects, I can only see grey'd out options, which won't let me enable desktop effects.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I configure my remote desktop preferences I am not able to connect using a VNC client to my ubuntu computer. The password box pops up when I type in the password it says it could not authenticate. I have changed the password in the remote desktop preferences and this has not solved the problem. I tried to find a way to reinstall the remote desktop application on ubuntu, but I cannot find what its name is and reinstalling vncserver did not help.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just built my new desktop yesterday, I got elementary Jupiter (built on Ubuntu 10.10) installed and running fine on it, everything works... except for when I tell it to suspend
Upon selecting suspend, the monitor goes black for all of about a second and then comes straight back to the lock screen, pretty damn irritating.
I'm running a 64 bit system on kernel 2.6.35-30.
I hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
I downloaded the 10.10 desktop version. Everything seems to work fine except Firefox. Sure, I can get on, but getting out is something of a chore. Half the time the page freezes and won't allow me to try anything else.
I tried: Clicking on the red "X" = nothing
Right-clicking on the page and selecting "Back" = nothing
Right-clicking on the task bar and selecting "Close" = nothing
Restarting the computer = nothing
The only way to get out when that happens, is to hold down the "Power" button. I know it's not good for the computer, but being held hostage in Firefox is not good for my patience. Even that is a crap-shoot. Sometimes it boots back up fine, only to resume what happened before the power went out when I log back into Firefox. Sometimes it won't let me out until I scan back to the main page by using the arrows one page at a time. This kind of thing never happened when I had the 9.04.
I have a Laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and a Netbook with Remix 10.04. I'm trying to connect by Remote Desktop from the Laptop to the Netbook. Remote Desktop wasn't installed by default in Remix so I installed it via software centre. I then configured Remote desktop in both machines. When I do Connect on the laptop all I get is a black screen and then it closes with the message "Connection to host was Closed". This happens when I try either VNC or SSH. The other thing that's odd, although both machines are on the same WLAN and I checked "configure networkautomatically to accept connections" on both machines, the Laptop doesn't find the other machine in Remote Desktop. What am I/have I done wrong or have I ommitted something?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have used Universal-USB-Installer to create a bootable usb stick (sandisk cruzer).I already have xp on the first partition (I installed this via usb so know that the laptop is capable of it).Booting to the usb stick brings me to the install menu forst. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have compiz installed, and ccsm. Currently the only window manager I can get to work is metacity.
KDE works fine with compiz.
If I even enable "desktop cube" in ccsm, my window manager dies and the proper one does not start up. Running Code:
In a terminal also bombs out.
Unity seems to work fine as far as this is concerned, but I hate unity. It isn't even remotely ready to use in my opinion.
I see alot of other people posting about this with no solid answers.
I moved all the following out of the way from my old 10.10 $HOME, so this should essentially be a clean home dir. as far as compiz and GNOME are concerned:

I created a brand new user and tried to enable compiz in classic desktop. Same thing.

I'm wondering if anyone is having a similar problem as mine when running Hulu Desktop. The application starts fine, but when I try to select anything to watch, the green progress bar continually resets over and over again as it tries to buffer a video, and playback never starts as a result. This happens for low, medium, and high quality. Hulu Desktop was working perfectly fine a few months ago. I've always been running Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) with the latest 64-bit Flash pluggins, and didn't have a problem before. Running Hulu Desktop from the command line doesn't reveal any error messages either.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently setup an ssh tunnel and wrote a script to connect to my Home PC from my laptop no matter where I am.
I have previously tested this on my own network and multiple other networks while I was over at my friends houses, and it worked completely fine.
So just now I decided to use it after about a day or two after not using it and now nothing happens. Normally it prompts me for a password and takes about 5 seconds then I am in.
I'm using openssh, vinagre, and dyndns for the hostname. Here is the script:

Remote desktop viewer has stopped working in ubuntu 10.04. When I click on the icon in the top panel. The message Starting Remote Desktop viewer appears in the bottom panel for about 20 seconds and then it disappears and nothing further happens.
Yesterday I disabled ipv6 which greatly speed up thunderbird email and coincidently solved a problem I was having with Google earth not connecting to the server.
I do not know if this is what is now causing the problem with Remote Desktop viewer.
I have just installed linux 10.10, I want to use vnc on my another computer to access my desktop using remote access. When I navigate to Remote esktop Preferences. Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address localhost, no ip address. this is not working.

I waited for half hour and still that cursor not stopping blinking ..And I have tried install with windows but when rebooted with ubuntu same thing happens . Also tried in VirtualBox and It works properly in it.
First off, this is not my laptopit is a friends that i installed ubuntu onthey asked me to try and fix their problem.PROBLEM: basically the desktop is locked. if it is any way to browse the files, it doesnt workyou double click a file on the desktop, you cant open folders. you cant open folders/locations through any menu.its like the desktop is an image of your desktop and the icons are hidden. but this is not how it is. the very first time you click on an icon, it highlights but nothing else. it wont unhighlight either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to restore my desktop to how it was, what I assume is default. Some background. I am not new to computers but not an advanced user by any means. While very comfortable in Windows, with Linux I feel like I am trying to learn a foreign language by reading a translation dictionary. Most times things go right but when things go wrong I have no idea why. I am running Xubuntu on an ASUS 701. I installed it based on these directions:[URL]
By the way under Sytem Monitor I am told I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) Kernel Linux 2.6.32-27-generic GNOME 2.30.2. I'm not sure what all that means or if it is relevant. I have been thrilled 70% of the time. Twice I have had to do a complete reinstall because so far that is the only way I have found to fix it when things go bad. I am hoping that this time I can avoid that. This morning I installed Wine from WineHQ and followed the directions on this page: [URL] That didn't work so well for me. Somehow it took up 2GB of disk space, scrambled my desktop and Thunderbird no longer worked. I reinstalled Thunderbird but that resulted in losing my inbox I uninstalled Wine but can't figgure out how to free up 1 GB of installed applications, I'll ask about that in a sepatate thread. I have searched and tried all kinds of tips and tricks on fixng the desktop. Deleting /.cache. Deleting /.config. Nothing. My final attempt was following the intructions here: [URL] Still not fixed. I tried all of the steps. Previously I had a tab labled "Apllications" in the upper left hand corner. Next to it was "Places" Then a button for Firefox. The Shutdown door button was in the upper right hand corner. My battery status, network status and clock were to the left of the door.
I have a remote desktop app for my ipod that i use every now and then, but after about a week and a half of not using remote desktop on either my ipod or my computer, it seems to have stopped working. the problem is with my computer rather than my ipod. when i go to menu>system>preferences>remote desktop, the area where it is supposed to give you the ip address, or whatever it is to connect remotely, is no longer a number, but just the word "localhost". i only saw this after my ipod told me it could not find the host, so i checked and thats when i saw localhost. putting that into the remote desktop app did nothing, so i tried my ip address and that didnt work either. clicking on "localhost" brings up evolution mail which wants me to send it as an email, strangely. not sure whats going on here.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Linux Ubuntu Desktop Edition on my Acer Aspire T671-TB7Z, the installation went smooth but the internet is not working. When I login the background blinks 3 times, and I can't move the mouse, after that I can. But the real problem is I am not very experienced with Linux but the wireless icon does show up and I can access wireless networks, I am connected, but when I load a page on Firefox it says it is on "work offline" so I unticked it and tried again. Nothing worked again, this is weird because I am using it now to post this thread on my sisters netbook and on the pc that has the problem has Windows 7 Ultimate as a dual boot and the internet works fine on that too, the only internet problem I have is linux.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a network bridge configured but every time I make the changes and restart networking (or reboot) eth0 appears to come up OK but I can no longer talk to the outside world via it. With no bridge defined, I can talk to the web using either wireless or wired; wicd is configured to switch to a wired connection when available (got rid of Network Manager. It didn't recognise eth0(!)).
I want to use the bridge so virtual machines (LXC containers) can talk to the web when the machine is wired to the wireless router. Eth0 gets its IP address (192.168.1.4) via DHCP from the router and I want to bridge to another subnet, 192.168.154.n say, and the containers will have fixed IP addresses 192.168.154.101, 102, 103 etc.

Im a new member here.So please don't get mad at me.If i posted on a wrong section(Am I in the right section?) By the way,Here is my problem. My graphic card is Intel 82852/82855.And it passes the Ubuntu Desktop Effects requirement. I am aware of enabling the graphic card in Ubuntu 10.10, Since enabling the drivers was successful. I enabled the desktop effects. After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect. That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem). Then it is still there.
