Ubuntu Servers :: S.M.A.R.T Monitoring And Notification Should Be Installed And Enabled By Default

I really think that Ubuntu Server should by default have SMART monitoring enabled, and possibly prompt for a notification e-mail address (and SMTP server details if required) for SMART notifications to be sent to.

How to disable notifications for Choqok? I cannot find option in Choqok. However, I can disable application notifications in system tray options, but in this case some ugly little window pops on the top of the screen informing me for new posts.

Ubuntu :: How Close Can I Get To Reset System To Default

May 3, 2010

I've been looking at possible options - I might install new from the CD if I have to. But before I do that, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to restore the system to the way it would have been if I'd actually done a clean install - but to leave /home intact and perhaps the application also. (I haven't installed that many). I'm running 9.10, upgraded from 8.04>8.10>9.04 - it's working but There are some issues I can't seem to resolve such as stuttering audio.

Ubuntu Servers :: Default File Permissions For System Folders

May 5, 2010

I had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.

What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/

The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.

Ubuntu :: NFS Mounted Directory \ The Owner Is The Default Superuser Of The System?

Nov 8, 2010

mount an NFS directory as a regular user (which doesn't have sudo rights) because a suitable entry (i.e. with the user option) is defined in /etc/fstab file. But, when I mount it, I am not the owner of it! The owner is the default superuser of the system. So I don't have write permissions in the mounted directory.

OpenSUSE :: How To Choose System Default Font

Jul 25, 2010

I'm using openSUSE 11.3 Ever since I started using Linux, I have had problems with Korean fonts. Now I think I am close to the solution. I want to know how openSUSE decide which fonts to use as the system default fonts.I know that I can change them in the Appearance -> Font dialog. But my questios is if those settings were just set as Sans (the default), how openSUSE choose what is Sans?I'm asking this because I found that if I copy Arial and consolas fonts into my ~/.fonts folder, then openSUSE uses them as the system defaults fonts. I don't know if this is correct behavior, but to me it seems very strange, and some applications such as Opera uses whichever fonts openSUSE uses as system default to render webpages, so I ended up having Arial for all my webpages open in Opera. So my questions are:1) How openSUSE decide which font to use as system defaults?2) Are font files in ~/.fonts folder supposedly regarded as defaults?3) Where are the setting files I can edit?

Fedora Installation :: Korean Not Working As System Default

Jul 7, 2011

Have 2 FC 14 servers. On both of them set system default language to German (de_DE), reboot, and all is as expected -- all menus and messages in German. Then changed system default back to English, reboot, both are back in English. Then changed system default to Korean (ko_KR), reboot. One server comes up in Korean as expected, but the other comes up in English.

/etc/sysconfig/i18n is ko_KR.utf8 as expected. SSH terminal and execute 'locale' and all variables set to 'ko_KR.UTF8' as expected. Start a GNOME session (thru VNC), open a terminal and 'locale' shows 'ko_KO.UTF8'. Changed default language back to German, reboot, everything comes up in German. Change it to Korean, reboot, and we're back to English (not even German). (Note: LANG=en_US is set as kernel boot option, do that's probably why not German here.) Have trolled through DMESG and /var/log/messages but do not see any error message.Tried 'yum groupremove "Korean Support"' to clear everything out, then re-installed it. Still the same result.

OpenSUSE :: Prevent Web Browsers From Using The System's Default Colors?

Aug 1, 2009

I have two problems related to color scheme. First, is there any way to prevent web browsers from using the system's default colors? I use a dark scheme, specifically Obsidian Coast in KDE and Industrial in GTK. This doesn't behave well on web pages in Firefox, Arora, and Konqueror. (Opera is fine.) Sometimes a site's stylesheet will specify a text field's text color to be black, but its background is not specified, so it defaults to black-on-dark-gray. I've also seen such a field's background color specified as white while the text color was not, so it ended up being light-gray-on-white. Is there any way to keep browsers from ruining web pages? Also, even if the stylesheet doesn't specify the colors, the dark text fields and buttons still stick out like a sore thumb on a warm or bright page.

My second problem is this: I have a saved session that brings up my applications every time I log in, but the GTK apps Pidgin and Evolution don't match the GTK color scheme until I quit and start them up again. Is there some way of fixing or working around this problem?

General :: Change The Default System JVM Search Order?

Jan 25, 2011

I have installed java-6-sun on my Ubuntu 9.10 and now I wanna change the default system JVM search order. Based on the following instruction I should modify my /etc/jvm.

But there is no jvm in my Ubuntu, all I have is jvm.* which "*" refers to ".h" or other suffix. There is no "jvm" alone in my Ubuntu in order to do what the following says.

Setup the default Java version

Ubuntu Linux comes with update-java-alternatives utility to updates all alternatives
belonging to one runtime or development kit for the Java language. To select, Sun's JVM as provided in Ubuntu 7.10, enter:

$ sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun

You also need to edit a file called /etc/jvm This file defines the default system JVM search order. Each JVM should list their JAVA_HOME compatible directory in this file. The default system JVM is the first one available from top to bottom. Open /etc/jvm

$ sudo vi /etc/jvm

Make sure /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun is added to the top of JVM list

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun

Software :: Build Pygtk With Non System Default Python?

Apr 13, 2011

I'm on Debian Lenny. I've built and installed python-3.2 in /opt/python-3.2. Then i want to build and install pygtk, pycairo with /opt/python-3.2 and install them in that folder and not to use system default python (which is python-2.6) for their build process.

How do I tell pygtk and pycairo 's configure and makefile script to use /opt/python-3.2 's interpreter, include file and library for their build process(and not the system default python)?

I tried doing ./configure --help in pygtk folder but there was no option for specific non-system default python's folder location. Anyone has any ideas?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting Default Port For A Sink In Pulseaudio System-wide?

May 7, 2010

The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab, or by issuing the following command:

Code: pacmd 'set-sink-port' 'alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.5.analog-stereo analog-output-mono;output-amplifier-on' The problem is both solutions apply only to a single account, while I would like to change it system-wide, so it applies to all accounts on the system (there are more then 100 accounts - it's a set up for a school).I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

Debian Installation :: Default Audio System For Squeeze And Skype

May 2, 2010

I would like to know which is the default audio system for Squeeze. I'll explain the reason for this question: I had a lenny desktop working like a charm until the hard disk damaged completely. After buying a new desktop computer, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I didn't know that the default audio system for Ubuntu was pulseaudio; so I always had problems with skype and my microphone. I remember that with my lenny desktop I never ever had any problem with my sound system and skype.

I've googled for months without finding a consistent fix for this problem in Ubuntu, I've also heard lots and lots of people with the same problem as mine and never solved it; so I decided to get rid of it and install debian Squeeze in my box, but I would like to be sure which is the default audio system for Squeeze, or at least know if anyone have had problems with skype and Squeeze.
