I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Now, a few months ago, I accidentally deleted my Ubuntu partition through Windows Disk Management, and I ended up not being able to boot up my computer. I can't remember what the exact cause was, but I think it was a problem with the GRUB, and I think I fixed it by reinstalling Ubuntu. Does anyone know how I can safely remove the Ubuntu partition without having to go through all this again?
I've just installed Squeeze with KDE. I was wondering what is the best way to remove some unwanted apps without breaking everything (I want to get rid of Kopete and a few other apps like Dragon Player as I don't use them)?
I tried to: apt-get remove kopete
but it said it wanted to remove a whole bunch of other stuff as well. (I'm a recent Fedora convert).
I've been using Gnome for several years and haven't had any real problems with it. Now, however, I find the descriptions of what Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell quite unsettling. That is, the Gnome devs have added a number of things I don't want, removed things I do want and made it impossible to configure Gnome 3 to work anywhere near what I want without adding unsupported third-party extensions. (Note: this is neither a complaint nor a flame; it's just a statement of my personal taste and any attempts to argue about it will be ignored.)
Currently, I have installed XFCE and am very happy with it on my two F14 boxes. I know that if and when I move to F15 (or F16 if 15 continues to be as problematic as it is so far) the upgrade will include Gnome 3, even though I don't use it. I'd like, therefore, to remove it but without removing any bits and pieces of it that are needed by whatever programs I'm using. What's the safest way to do this?
Let's assume I have a volume group (VG) with six physical volumens (PV) - sdb1, sdb2, sdb3, sdc1, sdc2, sdc3..I want to remove one of the PVs from the group in order to use its space elsewhere - how can I know if it's safe? How can I do that without losing data and without first "pvmove"ing it elsewhere?Reading a bit more, my guess is using the result of pvscan, but I thought I'd ask before removing keeping it safe as I'm not an LVM expert.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if this is a bug in Squeeze beta 2 or if it's something I've overlooked. I have a Maxtor 250 GB external USB drive that I use for backups. It gets auto-mounted fine, always in the same place, and from my normal user account I can write to it, even delete directories on it if I want to. But when, from Gnome, I select the "Safely remove" option, I get an error to the effect that it can't stop the device. The weird thing is that the thing actually *is* unmounted. I've checked the mount point and it's no longer there.Is there some package I maybe should've installed but haven't? I'm not really worried about data loss, since I'm sure the drive wouldn't unmount unless it was properly synched; it's just the error message that bugs me.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a nightly scheduled script which creates a $vhostname directory under /mnt, mounts a windows box pointing to /mnt/$vhostname then rsyncs (pulls) some files/folders from the mount point. After this, I want to unmount the drive and remove the /mnt/$vhostname directory. Problem is that removing the /mnt/$vhostname directory sometimes ends up deleting all the files on the source! Example of script (stripped out lots of superfluous stuff):

It seems that my umount line isn't disconnecting the mount, leaving the following line to literally delete all directories, recursively. Is there a way of safely just deleting the directory (ie: mount link) without linux accidentally trashing the whole source?
Failure to safely remove the USB with the following techniques:
1) umount /dev/sdd and I get the error "umount: /dev/sdd is not mounted (according to mtab)"
2) dolphin > right click the drive icon > safely remove: I get the error message "org.desktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: Cannot open /media/.hal-mtab"
3) konqueror: sys:/info > click the drive eject button (nothing happens)
4) device notifier > click the drive eject button : I get a ERROR in Plasma Workspace that says "Could not unmount the device. One or more files on the device are open within an application" ... NOTE: this will happen on a fresh reboot with the folders of the USB never accessed, much less files being open on it.I have also noticed something similar when dealing with cds/dvds.... seems like I can only eject on a reboot.
After a fresh install of 10.04, there are many applications which I will never use. I am just scared to remove them, because if I try, I end up losing my desktop interface. And which ones can I safely remove?

I originally installed Xubuntu Desktop so that I could manage my fileserver with the GUI (through FreeNX). Now that I have gotten more confortable with Linux, I manage the fileserver entirely from the terminal and ssh.
I feel like I could trim down the fileserver and free up some memory and CPU cycles. Additionally, I don't really like having receive the firefox updates, etc.
Is there a way I can eliminate the GUI from my fileserver?

I had the ubuntu-desktop installed for training purposes and I decided to remove it.I followed these steps:URL...Now when I restart the server, I do not have access to my command line. Or more correctly, I dont have a prompt to enter anything into. the last thing it shows on startup is:restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd.I can login remotely with no issue. Apache is working fine. MYSQL is working fine, Memcached is working fine. But no clue how to manage the server from the server itself.

Ubuntu 11.04. i removed the Compiz from my computer after thinking by mistake that i don't need it anymore. after rebooting the computer, the desktop disappear. i'd try to install it again but without solving the problem.

This is what I have done so far:
Booted to Recovery
Logged in as the user.
Ran the following to reinstall desktop:-
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
All seem well, but now it wants conf. So I have ran the following after rebooting:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
But still no joy, as when the system reboots it stops at the splash screen desktop ubuntu and seem to be trying to boot to the desktop. But no joy.
I hate desktop icons and shortcuts. I don't ever need them, and they look wasteful and cluttery sitting there unused. Since everything is accessible from the menus, I would like to not have any icons on my desktop in Fedora 11. I have been playing around with the settings for days and can't find a way to make them disappear.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon
- Could not update ICEauthority file /home/dsikl/.ICEauthority
- There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/bgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
- Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/dsikl/Desktop, /home/dsikl/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them.
i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.
i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were
I've created a headless ubuntu mac server and everything is being found by Bonjour and showing up in Finder. The only thing that bugs me is the default horrible text used for remote desktop. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 5 Dell servers that I recently upgraded from 11-12 and have noticed an issue that after removing and re-attaching a monitor I am presented with the login screen. After logging in I am just presented with the background image, nothing else. I have logged in using ssh and restarted gdm with no effect. init 3 followed by init 5 still has no effect. Only when I restart with or without monitor attached does it start working as expected again.Has anybody else seen this issue? It was not present in Fedora 11 on these machines.

Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.
what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software
