Ubuntu Networking :: Can Download And Safely Install Ndiswrapper

Mar 25, 2010

I've just plugged my old ubuntu 8.04 drive which used to run on an amd dual core 64 bit machine onto into my new intel duo core 64-Bit box. uname -a gives:Linux aegis 2.6.24-22-generic #1 SMP mon Nov 24 19:35:06 UTC 2008 X86_64 Gnu/Linux. what i'm aiming to do is install the netgear wg311v3 wireless card drivers using ndiswrapper. The ubuntu box is currently offline and i've gone to URL...

my question is can I download and safely install ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb or is there an intel specific package that I should be looking for?

Fedora Networking :: 14 X64 Ndiswrapper Modprobe Ndiswrapper Module Not Found?

Jan 28, 2011

i've patched the source files to be installed on f14 and finally got a succesfull install, ndiswrapper -l comes back with driver installed and presentwhen i run modprobe ndiswrapper i get "FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found" after many hours of google searching and reading various threads i cannont seem to find a solution to this apart from manualy coping the ndiswrapper.ko file but when i use that solution modprobe starts ndiswrapper but there is no wlan0 present in iwconfig.now for some reason even wheni move the ndiswrapper.ko file manually it still is giving me that error. this worked earlier as i mentioned but then i reinstalled ndiswrapper hoping something went wrong but still got the same error so i tried that same fix and i'm still getting that error. i can't figure out what i migt've done differently earlier but i'm not having any luck.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Install Ndiswrapper For The Love Of Life?

I've usually never had much of a problem setting up wireless with ndiswrapper and ubuntu. I decided to give KUduntu a try, and for the love of me I cannot install ndiswrapper:

Code:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However, the following packages replace it: ndiswrapper-common E: Package ndiswrapper-utils has no installation candidate I'm pretty sure I've added all the repositories in the sources. OpenSUSE Install :: Over Vista SAFELY?

Dec 29, 2009

In attempting to install Opensuse 11.X, I have repeatedly encountered a warning I am not sure how to get past safely. The systems I wish to dual-boot Opensuse with will either be primarily Vista, Win 7, or XP, all of which will hopefully also have a third boot option for Windows Server 2008. If there are suggestions of which order to install these operating systems, but I understand if no one wants to waste this thread simply discussing that. When installing Opensuse over a Vista installation, it comes to a point where it finds the previously used partition, which is one a single HD laptop. It will warn, no matter which direction I try to go, that I will lose the entire partition.

This is the step I wish assistance with, as it seems to happen with any option chosen. Otherwise, I am aware that another partition could be created on this single drive, from within Vista, and that one could be chosen during Opensuse installation. I have understanding of the MBR. If someone was to make a reply and mentioned what they know would occur to the MBR, if I chose to install Opensuse to a separate empty partition than the one Windows is using, it would be helpful. A step by step explanation of which option to choose, when all options I've tried keep telling me that the partition will be lost, If someone knows a separate page that lists steps to take at that point of the Opensuse installation, designed to help those that are warned that the partition will be lost, it would be good to mention for novice users like me.

I was hoping that downloading and burning the installation disc would be half the battle for an experienced OS user of 15 years, but it wasn't. I am getting in to Opensuse because it is the alternate OS of choice for IBM, my future dream employer, as I get closer to a Computer Science degree and begin to learn programming. All systems that will use Opensuse will be experimental, and never mission critical, in my education.

Debian :: Wine Nightmare / How Can I Install It Safely?

I have Debian Lenny with a couple of libraries from backports. I go to install Wine from the package manager and it says such and such a dependency is needed but that the backports version is installed, I use force version to choose right version then it says the same for every other file so it`s going round in circles.

Some libraries, libasound and similar, are installed from backports but it seems wine wants the older version. How can I install wine without this endless loop and without breaking anything, please?

OpenSUSE Install :: Safely Move Bootloader To Another Disk ?

Aug 25, 2010

Ages ago I installed Linux on a "spare" 40GB disk and I don't remember how, but that disk is where I still boot the computer from, in Bios it's listed as a primary master and HD0.

Over the time my installs moved to the "main" disk where it is now Suse 11.3 alongside Windows.

I want to get rid of that original "spare" disk altogether, physically take it out, but don't know how to move the bootloader to the "main" one.

I'm confused by all the options offered in Yast Boot Loader Location menu.

Can I just tell it to put itself into a custom boot partition and point it to dev/sdb, the current designation of the "main" disk?

Would I need to edit Grub as well? I figure the current "sdb" would be called "sda" after I take the old disk out. Would it be safe to simply rename /sdb entries, things like /sdb4 to /sda4 and so on?

Additional question - I used to play with Win7 demo, deleted that now, but its loader still pops up when I boot into Windows with their "earlier version of operating system" menu. Their offered solution is to run "mbrfix" from a WinXp recovery CD.

My question - what would that mbrfix do to the Linux bootloader and how can I get it to point back to to Grub afterwards?

OpenSUSE Install :: Removing Alt Installed Kernel Safely

Hoping for some verification before I proceed. An alt kernel was installed side by side with the current mainstream kernel during an experimental NIC driver install. Unfortunately, since the experiment failed I would now like to remove all traces of the alt kernel since it was given a version ahead of the current main version and I would like to avoid all possibilities of contention should a future kernel upgrade use the experimental alt kernel's version number.

Fedora :: How To Install Ndiswrapper GUI

Jan 12, 2011

1: how do you install the ndiswrapper GUI? since i'm coming from a windows background, a little visual would help me out alot. also, whenever i type in "su - yum install kmod-ndiswrapper" it says its setting up the install process, then it says, "no package kmod-ndiswrapper, nothing to do" i have RPMfusion free/nonfree repos installed along with livna repos. can somebody tell me what's wrong?

2: for whatever reason, whenever i plug in my wireless card, i works for about 10 mins. or so, then if i have in my corded optical mouse plugged in, everything goes wrong. first the mouse starts moving in frame by frame, but when i use the built in trackpad it works fine, stranger even is that i can move my mouse around, but whenever i click on something, it doesn't respond. it doesn't ever do this when i use the ethernet port.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect After Using NDISWrapper / Make It Possible?

Jan 2, 2010

My wireless card (an Atheros AR928x) was not performing very well. At the suggestion of a friend I tried to use NDISWrapper (using the ndisgtk GUI interface) to see if a Windows driver would work better. I found the XP drivers online, tried several versions and, after none worked, I decided that I might as well settle with the crappy quality of the Linux driver and let it go. Sadly, that may not be possible.

I removed the drivers (again via ndisgtk) and now the laptop can't use the card at all. It won't detect any networks (even when just five feet from the router) and I'm not sure what's causing this. I've tried rebooting and rebooting into an older kernel. I checked lspci and it still recognizes the card.

Any idea what's up and how I could fix it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Ndiswrapper - Connect To The Internet

Mar 21, 2010

I have tried to get ndiswrapper to work on an ubuntu 9.04 32 bit system but have yet to succeed. After installing the windows driver, the usb wireless network adapter is recognized but will never connect to the internet. I have disabled the driver included with jaunty. Now what makes this strange (at least to me) is that ndiswrapper works perfectly with ubuntu 9.04 64 bit. It could very well be something that I am not doing in the 32 bit system (but I don't know what that might be).

I have tried ndiswrapper with several other distros with the same result. So, I don't think it is specifically related to ubuntu however, since ubuntu is what I am using, I am posting in this forum hoping that someone might be able to help me. I have several 32 bit machines I would like to set up but cannot until I get this resolved. I have also tried downloading and compiling a native driver with no success either. Anyway, here is my setup:

PC with AMD64 dual core processors running at 2Ghz and 3 GB ram.
Belkin N150 Enhanced Wireless Router
Belkin N150 Enhanced Wireless USB Network Adapter

And an aside: I am using WICD network manager and would like to know what the tray icon means when it says it is connected at say 54%. My question is, 54% of what? In windows this info is given in Mbps which is more meaningful.
