Ubuntu Installation :: How To Safely Uninstall Peppermint OS

May 13, 2010

In my case, getting fed up with Lucid's flaky behaviour with my particular display, having tried various solutions that were really only half-baked workarounds (the best being to install a mainline kernel) - I decided to install Peppermint Linux next to Ubuntu, thus creating a dual boot system. But I've decided I don't really like Peppermint Linux. Further, in the meantime, I've found a workaround for Lucid which (so far) seems like a longer term solution (I installed Kernel xxxx?-22, while increasing my display's refresh rate - and now all is hunky-dory - it starts perfectly, with a 'normal' visual effects desktop, and even Cheese no longer crashes the system with my old webcam).

Now here's the rub....
How to (a) uninstall Peppermint Linux (with its Grub - which was obviously set over Lucid's) (b) reclaiming the whole hard drive (it's only 40gb total - as it's an oldish machine) for Lucid - without having to reinstall Lucid, which I now have very nicely set up indeed, albeit currently squeezed for space? Is there some nice patient geek out there who can put me out of my misery with a step by step guide? I've tried Google - but everyone with a similar problem seems to want to reclaim the space for Windows!

Fedora Installation :: Safely Removing Gnome

Jun 15, 2011

I've been using Gnome for several years and haven't had any real problems with it. Now, however, I find the descriptions of what Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell quite unsettling. That is, the Gnome devs have added a number of things I don't want, removed things I do want and made it impossible to configure Gnome 3 to work anywhere near what I want without adding unsupported third-party extensions. (Note: this is neither a complaint nor a flame; it's just a statement of my personal taste and any attempts to argue about it will be ignored.)

Currently, I have installed XFCE and am very happy with it on my two F14 boxes. I know that if and when I move to F15 (or F16 if 15 continues to be as problematic as it is so far) the upgrade will include Gnome 3, even though I don't use it. I'd like, therefore, to remove it but without removing any bits and pieces of it that are needed by whatever programs I'm using. What's the safest way to do this?

Fedora Installation :: Safely Remove Unsupported Packages After FC13 Upgrade?

Jun 2, 2010

I managed to successfully upgrade FC11 to FC13. While doing the post upgrade steps, I made a HUGE mistake. After identifying the unsupported packages, I used "yum remove package1 package2" command to remove the obsoleted ones without realizing the yum was also removing many FC13 packages! Here are the cmd sequence used:

# package-cleanup --orphans
...
# yum remove compat-db45-4.5.20-5.fc10.i386 flash-plugin-10.0.32.18-release.i386 gnome-spell-1.0.8-5.fc9.i386 ifd-egate-0.05-21.i586

[code]....

I simply typed Yes and left unattended for a few minutes after yum prompted there were # of packages to be removed as I blindly believed it would do the job. After returning to the computer, I found many installed icons were disappearing, the wireless suddenly turned off etc. I killed the yum process right away but it was too late.

-Is there anything I could do to undo the yum remove process?

-How to safely remove supported packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Install Ubuntu Safely?

Apr 2, 2011

I just take back my Netbook from warranty claim. The hard disk and motherboard has been replaced. My netbook is using internal Ralink RT3090 Wireless Adapter. The module(driver) bundled with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 consist of a bug that cause the whole Netbook to freeze when unloading the module. That mean, for each shut down or reboot, my Netbook will freeze. Even at the last stage of Ubuntu installation by using Wubi, my Netbook will still freeze. Every time when this happen, I have to do hard reboot (press the power button to turn off the Netbook and then turn on again). This caused the damage to my Netbook.

The bug of the module has been fixed in latest version of Wireless modules downloaded from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download . However, the version bundled with Ubuntu is old version that still having the bug.

I need to reinstall Ubuntu on my Netbook. I need to use it immediately. I cannot wait until the next version of Ubuntu to be released. But, I do not want my Netbook to freeze again. I do not want my Netbook to be damaged again.I only want to use Wubi to install Ubuntu because I do not want to do anything that affect the partitions in my hard disk. And, I do not want to run Ubuntu in virtual machine because Windows 7 itself already used a lot of memory. So, what am I going to do to install Ubuntu safely without facing freeze? Please advice.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 along with my Windows 7 operating system. After quite a bit of trial and testing, I've decided to remove Ubuntu. I probably did this incorrectly, but I deleted the Ubuntu partition from within Windows 7 partition manager. The next time I booted the system, the computer tried booting with Grub and failed due to not finding the partition.I've since reinstalled Ubuntu just to be able to dual-boot again. How do I cleanly remove Ubuntu and the Grub boot manager?

I dual boot with XP, My upgrade to 11.04 has been two weeks of FUBAR. I want the 10.04 LTS again. With the 10.04 disk in, I get to the point of "Prepare Disk Space"; it shows XP-pro 81Gb and Ubuntu 11.04 75Gb. There I must choose side-by-side, Use Entire Disk, or Specify partitions Manually. My Question/Problem> The new 11.04 kernel seems so incompatible with my system that I wonder if I need to delete or reformat. Am I likely to have success if I just tell it to do side-by-side.

Ubuntu Installation :: Doesn't Install - Uninstall ?

Aug 14, 2010

I installed ubuntu by using Wubi to try it out. When I restatered and booted up ubuntu it said claimed to be finishing up installations which was taking nearly 1.5 hours of getting nowhere before I got frustrated and shut it off. I wen't back on windows to see if a re installation would be better. But my computer didn't seem to agree on that and wouldn't uninstall it. So I manually deleted the files myself. Now when I start up my computer I still see the choice to boot up kubuntu but yet there is no kubuntu if I select it. Any ideas how to get rid of the selection and why wubi didn't work? Not even live CD's are working on my computer.
