How to disable compiz temporarily and re-enable it?I can't find System>Preferences>Compizconfig Settings Manager
I updated system few days back. and Ka-boom! Suddenly my all desktop effects gone. My theme effects of Mac from the theme Macubuntu 10.10 were gone too. I removed Macubuntu and tried to go into visual effects tab in Appearance Preferences, but it says "Mutter is running, Can't switch to other effects." Now, may this mutter is coming in natty narwhal & new, but seriously it's 2D effects aren't smooth enough.. Also I just can't use Alt+Tab which I'm habitual of.
My question is: How to disable this mutter and re-enable my Compiz-Fusion? I tried to kill mutter process from the daemons and start a compiz.. It didn't work.. Instead, I had to reboot my machine everytime I did that. When I remove mutter from sudo apt-get remove mutter.My desktop stays blank after a reboot and I can't access anything.. Thanks to EasyStroke that I'd given stokes to open a new terminal.

I used ubuntu and recently install Mandriva in to my laptop.I install both Kde and gnome desktop.I like to have kwin effects in kde . But i cant enable Kwin animation in kde and Compiz fusion animation occur in both Kde and gnome.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to temporarily disable NetworkManager while I configure some things in a shell. It's interfering by auto-reconnecting and using the network interface in the process. I've tried killing the process but that just seems to disconnect the network not kill the NetworkManager applet. I don't want to uninstall, and I don't want to have it disabled on startup. I just want to "close" it or "turn it off" temporarily! How can I do this? Also, I'm using 10.04

I've searched Google and these forums, but still can't find a guide to disable OpenAL. So how would I go about disabling this temporarily so I can get PlaneShift working?
I'm currently trying to learn how to get around Blender, but I keep running into the same problem. Blender relies heavily on shortcuts and keystrokes to navigate it's GUI, but very often they clash with the shortcuts on my desktop. The result is that the desktop shortcut wins, making Blender impossible to use effectively.
Is there any way to disable the desktop shortcuts temporarily while using the software, and then setting them back when I'm done?
Is there a way to just temporarily disable pulseaudio and use alsa instead?
Or run a program under alsa while letting pulse sit in the background?
I'm getting sick and tired of not being able to play any platinum games on wine...
Is it possible to temporarily enable all repos from within the command line? It would be useful when searching for packages. ie yum enablerepo=* search tint2 (which doesn't work btw!)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to enable Compiz Snow in Ubuntu 10.04. Every other desktop effect I have tried works fine but when I check the box for snow it unchecks itself after a couple of seconds. I have the 'Animations Add-On' button checked... no snow. I also have all these installed:

So I was playing with my compiz with a Intel Graphic card and I enable a effect that caused my graphics to die render my install useless after login, Can I disable compiz before I log in? after I log in all I can do its use ctrl+alt+f2.
View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend whom I turned on to Ubuntu with 9.10 recently connected a projector to watch a movie off her laptop. When it was connected, the laptop screen changed and it was clear that desktop effects through compiz were disabled. Thing is, since disconnecting the projector, I cannot get the effects back.If I go into Preferences - Appearance and click to enable Normal or Extra Visual Effects, the same thing happens. I.e. I get a popup saying Searching for hardware driver...and after about 20 seconds, the screen flashes a bit, and says
Desktop effects could not be enabled. Not sure why it's searching for a hardware driver. The computer doesn't require any 3rd party hardware drivers to be enabled - it doesn't have an nVidia card or anything like that.If it makes a difference, she yanked the VGA cord out without setting the display mode back to just her laptop with the FN and F key combo.I've tried:

I have installed Lucid on my old T61p. And I am using the NVidia driver Nouveau. But I cannot work out how to enable compiz with it. Is it possible to have composite effects with this driver?

I've been using this system for over a year with the built-in Intel G31 chipset graphics. Then I decided to get an nVIDIA card to run Folding@home, among other things. I found that I had to run the graphics off the nVIDIA card to get Folding to run, but that caused jerkiness. So then I discovered these instructions (which are one of several reasons I don't want to upgrade from Jaunty at this time.) I'm now using my Intel card for the display, and my nVIDIA card for Folding. The only problem with this setup is that I can't enable Compiz, or do other graphically-intensive stuff like certain games. For now I'm using Metacity. Running glxinfo provides me with the following nice message:

I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. It but, but unfortunately it rendered the desktop completely unusable and alll I have now is literally a desktop with no menu's or toolbars of any kind.Although I can login using the 'Classic' option I really think I should fix what I have broken (before reverting to 10.10).Is there any way to re-enable the Unity plugin via command line?I tried entering ccsm via terminal but nothing happens. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.

However, somethings didn't work; such as the cube wouldn't change to the sphere, and the windows animations wouldn't work. When I restarted my computer, the cube changed to what I had set. The windows animations, however, didn't. How can I get all of these effects to work, and to take effect without restarting the computer?

The gnome-terminals are transparent. I would like to disable the transparency, because I have a lot of terminals open at the same time and I don't want to be able to see one below another one.
In the gnome-terminal preferences, Background is set to "solid colour". However, Compiz seems to be over-riding this somehow.
I have the CompizConfig Settings Manager installed. I have looked through it but I can't find an option which disables the transparency for terminals. I tried the Opacity, Brightness and Saturation plugin, but it only allows you to vary the transparency level, not disable it entirely, and there doesn't seem to be a way of setting a default.
I like Compiz very much, so I don't want to disable the desktop effects. Does anyone know how to just disable the gnome-terminal transparency?
I'm not using lubuntu. Somehow I selected that and I can't get rid of it now. I'm on Ubuntu with Gnome.

I have a dell inspiron 1525 and installed Virtualbox 3.2.6 and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM. The installers went fine. After updating and installing the guest additions and also installing compiz-setting-manager i'm still not able to get the compiz effects. please any suggestions .

I re-installed Debian recently and I have a question about compiz. Is there any way to enable Compiz without replacing Metacity? I say this because using compiz --replace replaces all of my shortcuts and reduces my workspaces to two, it would even let me add more.
