Ubuntu :: How To Read Backup Files In Windows
Jun 15, 2011
I had some problems with my hdd, I fixed most of the problems with "testdrive" or "testdisk" (cant remember) but I have some bad sections on my disk right where my important data is. I made a backup with "dd" from a live cd. I have the backup with a reading error or 5 so I guess most data is safe? I have the backup of the whole drive on an other hdd and now I need to get just a few folders out of it. I tried in windows but I can't read it. Poweriso can but not the privet folders like /var/ and that folder I need. I had a password on the account so I guess that is part of the problem? How to read the backup file in windows?

[Sorry if this is misplaced; I just couldn't think which category to put it under.] So yeah, I'm almost exclusively using karmic (yay!), but I still have to use that vista install I have smushed in a corner of my HD from time to time. Now, I installed karmic using the default, latest file system (ext4, I believe it is, right?). Last I remember hearing, that presents a bit of a problem, doesn't it?

A real os should at least e able to read and write plain text, you think? But no, when I try to open my text files (mainly made with gedit) some characters are ass, swedish letters rarely work and ', ", / and so on are not represented as the characters I want to see. Is there a easy, fast way to read (and print!) my text files at school, where they have only windows, without spending half an hour fixing the file by hand?

I'm saving files onto my NTFS partition from Ubuntu (Karmic, dual boot with Vista Home), but, although the files appear to be there, they cannot be read. The error message is 'File not Found. Check the name and try again'. File appears under Windows Explorer and has a file size of 986K.

Second, How can she read files of Ubuntu (documents- ODT File (.odt)) in Windows? How can she print the doc's when the printer only works for Windows?
Third, how can be deleted the Ubuntu from her machine when she be able to return the pc to thye dealer?

I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/

Uploaded a bunch of photos to my Linux machine. (Windows got a bug, didn't want to infect any other windows machine, so I decided to "Scrub" files with Linux.) I'm now attempting to rip these files to dvd to upload onto other computers. Burning to DVD seems to be fine, but windows doesn't read any of the jpg's.

I was busy making backups to my external hard drive just now, but Ubuntu crashed 10 mins into the backups. After rebooting the affected folders are now Read only, and I cannot add or remove anything. This is extremely annoying, I already threw away two USB flash disks because the same thing happened to me in the past. I don't want to throw away the external because it's far more expensive and packed with backups.
Symptoms: I can write or delete a file to the hard drive, in any folder, accept the folders that was being accessed when the computer crashed. I have tried to change permissions, but I get an error. I tried opening a terminal and sudo rm -r that folder, but I get a input/output error. I'm running Karmic. Backups were made by Back-in-time.

Until now i haven't had to dabble with bash scripts.
I have a program that reads in data files. These are named datafile01_R, datafile01_G, datafile01_B, they then increment, so datafile02_R etc i have about 600 of these. the program reads in 3 data sets at a time from each run, so files_01 r, g, and b.
The program then does its magic, and outputs about 40 different files, depending on the file, they gone to folders named R, G, B, psa, or tracking.
The program itself has configuration files to say where the files should gone when analyzed, there is also the config files that reads in the data sets.
At the moment i have to run one set of data, then go in and manually change the input file location, and run again. But, doing this, even though a different data set, the new set overwrites the old set in one of the output folders. So i need a way to increment the output filenames after they are written and before the program is run again with the new data set.

I have been hassling with this for several days now. I have 64-bit Ubuntu Server 10.04 running on an Acer Aspire EasyStore H340. I have windows 7 running on a 64-bit desktop pc and on a laptop. I mainly wanted to use the Ubuntu server for a file server, so I installed Samba and created three shares. These do show up in Windows explorer, and I can read and write to them. My windows applications seem to be able to see the shares and open & save files.
My next step was to try and set up a backup of the Windows 7 pc to the Ubuntu server. Windows integrated backup sees the shares and sub-directories within the shares, and the initial part of the backup seems to run OK, but when it tries to save an image of the 'C:" drive it works for a long time and then ends with an error (cannot complete backup).
So, I looked for some free backup programs to try, but these do not allow me to select the shares as a destination (invalid destination). The dialogue sees the drives I have mapped the shares to in Windows, but does not show any sub-directories, and selecting the mapped drive letter does not take as a destination. If I try to browse down through "Network" in the destination dialogue, it selects "Network," but does not expand it or accept it as a destination.
So, I partitioned, formatted as ext3, and mounted my 2nd 1TB SATA drive on the server, and mounted it as "storage." I set this up as share in Samba and gave everyone read-write access, but still no luck selecting it for a backup destination. After some Googling, I downloaded and installed Ext2Fsd-0.48 (a windows 'driver' for Ext2/Ext3). This installed correctly, but when I open the program, neither "Network," the shares, or the mapped drives show up anywhere.

I'm trying to find a way to backup my files to cdr/dvdr. I'd like to put a blank disk in when I finish using the machine, have it backup anything new, up to the size of the media and stop. I can put in new media the next day and I'd like it to continue from where it left off. It would be best if the backups are readable by any machine and I could extract specific files if a problem should arise. Any suggestions? Tar won't let me specify a final archive size and wants to do all the volumes in the backup at the same time.

well, i know ther are issues when using rsync to copy files to ntfs partition like file permission blah blah. the thing is, i need to backup my music files periodically onto a ntfs partition from ext4. i really dont care about file permissions or any other stuff. when i use rsync, it should update the mp3 files on my ntfs (external) disc with the new ones.can i give a go with this operation? i have lot more important files on the external disc and i dont want this rsync corrupt or delete those files coz they are highly important files.

I am a beginner to Ubuntu / linux. I plan to partition my laptop (HP pavilion) for Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu). Can I backup both Linux and Windows 7 files to a single external USB hard drive? (Obviously, they will be in separate directories). If yes, how do I do that? If not, what are my alternatives?
I assume Ubuntu will recognize a USB hard drive as an external flash drive, right? I also notice external SATA hard drive docking stations with USB interface are available, and I have not use them before. The devices takes internal SATA hard drive. If you have use them before, let me know how did you format it using Ubuntu or Windows7 while the drive is attached to the station.

I've been installing a fair amount of packages from slackbuild.org. Is it a good idea to backup the tgz files i get from building the .SlackBuild files?. I think this would save me time in case if i reinstall slack, then i can install these packages by doing just
Code:
Instead going through the whole:
1)Download source,SlackBuild script
2)Run SlackBuild script
3)finally installpkg if successful.
Will there be any problems with configurations if i don't do it from the beginning?. I thought of this because some packages took helluva time to download and compile.

I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB

Having trouble running backup software to network storage. (Ubuntu 10.04 Beta)
I mounted my network drive (a Netgear Stora) with curlftps (tried several other ways, but this is the only way that works). It shows up like a regular HDD which I can copy files to in the file manager, but when I try running backup software only the folders are copied.
I've tried several backup programs, some based on Rsync, as well as Rsync itself, but they all had problems. Dj Dup kind of worked and was able to copy files (archives), but kept dropping the ethernet connection instead.
