Ubuntu :: How To 'see' Files Run On XP System
Jul 3, 2010
I have downloaded and run Ubunto and want to run this system on the same computer that has up until today only had Windows XP running. How can I get my programs and my files to show up in Ubunto.
I have noticed on one thread that Samba may let Umbunto 'see' the files in XP.
I have down loaded Samba but it says that Windows does not recognize the program. The 'unzipper' programs are all for fee. ARe there any free?
Do I need to download Samba while running Ubunto to transfer the files and programs to Ubunto?

I'm new to openSUSE, this is the first time i try to install openSUSE version 11.4. on my IBM Thinkpad T43 (on which SUSE Linux version 8.0 has been running before without problems). I have downloaded the ISO images and successfully burned the ISO images on a blank DVD. Having placed my openSUSE DVD in the drive and rebooted my laptop I can see the boot screen.
I then select installation with arrow up/down and press enter. Choosing language and keyboard layout works fine, as well as accepting the license agreement. However, when it comes to 'System Probing' the installation stops at 'Search for system files'. The cursor shows a little turning disk but the rest of the screen is blocked.

When I boot up my Ubuntu system I get the following error message:Install Problem The configuration defaults for Gnome Power Management have been installed incorrectlyI found the following posting and this describes what also happesystemhttps://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/111256I've created a recovery disk by using a memory stick from which I can boot. I can mount the old filesystem (HD). When I navigate, with the file browser, into one of the folder on the the HD and try to delete messages I get the following error message - 'Error removing file: Permission denied'.I guess I need to log / tell those files the root password from the system installation as per the version on the HD. But how do I do this?

I'm having difficulty installing a MOD for Lpanzer because I can not modify any files in the file system because I'm not the owner. According to permissions Root is the owner. So how do I either tell Ubuntu I'm the owner? Or do I need a utility program to get things going?

I have an anime series (about 24 episodes, each 325-350 megabytes each) encoded in .mkv format, high quality (1280x720). It took quite some time to download this series, however no matter what I do, I cannot get the files to play correctly under Ubuntu. I have tried several different media players, including VLC, Movie player, and Mplayer, and none work correctly. VLC will play the first 15-20 seconds fine, and then stop the video and go back to the beginning. I however, do realize that my laptop isn't high-spec, and isn't really built for HD video playback (1.6ghz single core athlon CPU, 4 gigs of ram, integrated radeon x1250 graphics chip.)
I can play these files on my system and have them play correctly? (Without lag or stuttering?) Also the anime is subtitled, so I would want to make sure the subs work correctly, and preferably have the audio in sync with the video.

before i proceed,I'll like to say that I'm a complete newbie, but enjoying my time with Ubuntu.
Recently, due to hard disk failure, some of the System files got corrupted, I have no idea to which files, but booting Ubuntu from the latest kernel is not working, instead I have to select the previous version from the grub screen.
How to recover these files? Is there a way by which Ubuntu automatically scans and repairs the system files.

Is there a file system that both Mac OSX 10.5 and linux can read/write for large files (like 4gb files)? My desktop is Ubuntu and I run most from there, but I want to back up my MacBook and linux box on the same external hard drive. Seems there are some (paid) apps for Mac that will mount NTFS but I'm wondering if there is just a shared files ystem that will work for both.

My system won't boot because the contents of /etc/fstab, while semantically valid, are not meaningful in my system - neither / or /home is defined, for example. For this reason too fsck will not run.
The grub menu displays OK.How do I rebuild fstab? How do I get permission to change any files on my system when using the Live-CD? Right now all attempts are stopped with a 'permission denied' message.

I don't seem to be able to create a new folder in my system files. I know I have to do this in the terminal as root, but I always get the answer that it cannot create the directory because there is no such file or directory. Yet the directory where I want to make the new folder definitely exists (I even just go there and try to create the folder)Here is the exact code:Code:lukas@lukas-VGN-FZ21E:/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p$ sudo mkdir ossmkdir: cannot create directory `oss': No such file or directory

I'm trying to create backup/archive my Ubuntu 10.04 system files (so I can restore it in case my system get corrupted). More specifically, I'm trying to zip the important files in my root directory not including my home directory (which includes my documents which I backup separately/more frequently) to an external hard drive attached via USB (called 'My Book').
Since File Roller didn't give me quite the level of control I was looking for, I created a script that I could execute to backup and archive regularly. Here's a snippet:
cd /media/"My Book"/"Linux Backups"
NOW=$(date +"%b-%d-%y")
LOGFILE=Backup_Root_FileSystem-$NOW.log
sudo zip -r -T -v Backup_Root_FileSystem-$NOW / -x /media/'My Book'* /media* /proc* /sys* /mnt* /dev* /cdrom* /home* /'lost+found'* | tee -a $LOGFILE
[Code]...

I have some very confidental files on my computer that I store such as credit reports, and other things. I always encrypt them with GPG, but there still is that original non-encrypted file left that needs to be deleted. I looked into tools like wipe, and shred but they all say that it really doesn't help on journaling filesystems directly on their man page.
I am not asking how to wipe the whole drive with dd or anything, but I am simply asking if there is a tool that'll delete a single file securely.

My server is not accessible any longer locally (192.168.0.2). If I attach a keyboard and login (I have done one pass of recovery from the Ubuntu live CD which helped) and check the IP address it seems to be set. However looking at the syslog file there is a line which says ext3-fs: info: recovery required on read only files system.
Is there a more extensive ext3 recovery facility I can use bearing in mind I will not (?) be able to install it?
I think I'm running 8.6 but not sure where to look to find it.

I'm interested to hear what config/settings files - or whole folders - you've managed to simply copy over from your previous installation and have working in the new. This can be either for specific programs or for parts of the system, but I suppose most of what people would find useful is getting some of their programs back to how they had them. These can be individual files or whole folders, but if there is a settings folder for a program but only one of the files is actually worth copying, just mention the one file and what it does. Also interested in hearing from KDE and Xfce users, for the benefit of those of us who have multiple desktop environments in the same system. (Besides, even those with only Gnome will use some of the great KDE apps like Amarok and K3b).
Here are my contributions:
(~/ denotes your home folder; any subfolders starting with a period [.] are hidden files or folders)
~/.cache/rhythmbox/covers (the folder containing all your album cover art displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts (any scripts you added to Nautilus will be in this folder)
~/.lyrics (the folder containing all your song lyrics displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml (Rhythmbox's database file; if you were forced to edit this because of some incorrectly displayed tags, don't forget to copy it over).
~/.gconf/apps/rhythmbox/plugins/ (Rhythmbox's plugins folder; plugins should be accessible when you restart Rythmbox).
~/.bash_aliases (Terminal command aliases you may have created will be in this file).
~/.gconf/apps/nautilus/preferences/%gconf.xml (Nautilus folder preferences file)
~/.mozilla/firefox (Folder for Firefox settings, cache, bookmarks, etc. If there are 2 or more subfolders with names like 2tb4r91t.default just copy over the latest one, and make sure profiles.ini points to it)
~/.thunderbird (Mozilla Thunderbird folder with all accounts, emails, settings, etc)

I dont know whats wrong with my desktop....but it is not displaying folders and files in desktop after starting the system. The mouse right click is also not working. But the panels are working.
But once I browse files on my cell phone(using bluetooth) with my system, the desktop is working as usual.
I think I have to add some application( which loads desktop) to list of start-up applications.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

Whenever I navigate into a folder containing video files, my entire system freezes/crashes. The keyboard, video, and the entire system become entirely unresponsive.
I can recreate the problem every single time by simply opening a nautilus window, then going into a directory containing 1 or more video files (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.). It doesn't seem to matter whether I stay in the folder, or quickly navigate away either. Seconds later, the system freezes entirely, to the point where my capslock key does not even toggle the capslock indicator.
I first noticed the problem when I installed 10.10 months ago on my Acer AspireOne D250. I had recently upgraded to ubuntu natty beta hoping the problem might have been fixed.

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
