I am new to XUbuntu and I cant seem to browse my other hard drives connected to my system, It keep saying Connecting to "60 GB Filesystem" failed.Authentication is required.
how do I browse my other hard drives in Xubuntu?
I am running 11.04 ubuntu and when i plug in my iphone i can browse its file system just fine with gui but i dont seem to be able to find it when i try to find it using command line.When i plug iphone i can see it in my Desktop but when i browse Desktop from command line it is not there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI hope someone can help me as I am new to Linux and Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to get VPN working properly with the pptp protocol. It is connecting but I cant seem to view folders or start a RDP session. I have tried this out with a Windows and a Linux machine and both work. The Linux machine was running Mint 10, in the vpn configuration I had set the gateway, user and pass, then in advanced mschap and mschapv2 were selected as well as mppe, allow bsd, allow deflate, and use tcp header. These settings work fine with Mint but its not working for me using Ubuntu. I did try to ping, sometimes it works sometimes it wont.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi was browsing one of my friend hard drive using knoppix live CD, i was amazed to find that all the folder which he uses was empty, there was no files present in them, for example there was a folder in /usr/local named web, but when i browsed that folder using knoppix it was empty.I searched for files in every partition but still no result found.
After some time when i placed hard disk back and booted the PC normally, everything was in its proper place. Then i thought to make image of the hard drive and use it on my PC, the image booted well, but still those particular files were missing. I want to know how is that possible? Is there any way to get files from the remote system during bootup?
I know how to commit a file and add a file on a linux svn but how do I commit or add a file to my assembla svn from linux ?

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

I switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"
This occurred after I was using it and then everything suddenly froze up on me and I had to crash out Now this!
Rsnapshot is a software written in Perl to make backup of local and remote file system. The well proven rsync is behind this utility. rsnapshot does not need root user intervention to restore the data of a normal user. It does not take much space in your Backup server. It can be easily automated (scheduled) to make life easier. Just setup once and forget it configuration. Basically it takes snapshot of file system (or a part of) in regular interval such as hourly, daily, weekly and monthly.
This can be configured easily through a simple text based configuration file. The above task can be setup in a few easy steps in a few minutes. Two major tasks are configuring rsnapshot and openssh automatic login. To make the backup automatically, we need to automate the remote login in a secured way. This can be done through openssh tools. Is there any software that will do full mirroring between a local and a remote file system. I have a server (9.04) and a laptop (9.10). Each user has shared a shared directory on the server, and on the laptop. Updates to files may be done on either system. I want to keep both copies syncronised. Currently I use a script based on rsync (scheduled by cron) to keep the local and remote copies in sync.
The problem with this approach is that rsync only seems to be able to handle deletion of files if one file system is the master, which is not the case in my set-up. If I move a file to a different directory, rsync will reinstate the old file as well as copying the new one. I was hoping there was some software that could do proper mirroring between the 2 systems, but6 so far I cannot find anything.
I am trying to get the dd command to successfully copy a disk image to a remote system.Right now I am testing out the syntax by trying to copy the /dev/sda1 directory of the subject computer. Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system
So when I click on delete I get another error message:
Error while deleting.

At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.
Every once in a while on a computer I'm ssh'd into, I will accidentally type "cat largefile.txt" and my screen will start rushing with text for the next 10 minutes. I'm always working in a screen session, so my current solution is to just log out and then log back in, and since it can go 100X faster when I'm logged out, it'll finish in the short time it takes me to type my password in again. Is there a better way? Either involving the fact I'm in a screen session? Or a way to do this within SSH? What doesn't work: detaching from the screen session (doesn't respond until file is done outputting) trying command to move to a different window in the screen session (also doesn't respond) typing ctrl+C to kill cat command (also doesn't respond, probably because the command is done and the buffers just have to catch up).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have created a new file system (fuse) which works fine and is mounted in the local host. I want to be able to mount it from another host. I added it to /ect/exports: /mnt/ltfs *(rw,sync) And restarted nfs. Then from my client host I type:
mount -t nfs myHostName:/mnt/ltfs /mnt/data1
Where /mnt/ltfs is on my local host and /mnt/data1 is on the client host. Note that this is a "FUSE" file system so here is it's local "mount" output: ltfs on /mnt/ltfs type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,default_permissions,allow_other) Note thet this is of type "ltfs" but I am told that it should work like its a nfs. ltfs uses fuse under the covers.
Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have two internet connections here, one through Allegro which goes through an ISA 2004 box and an ADSL2+ connection.Everything works fine when connected via the ISA box. Windows machines (and last I checked, a Macbook) work fine on the ADSL2 setup, but nothing Ubuntuesque will work properly through it.DHCP is fine (and the same thing happens with a static IP), it gives a proper address, DNS works fine, it's just whenever a page attempts to load, Firefox will sit at the "Waiting for <site>..." status until it gives up. apt does the same thing.What I've tested it on so far is:
- a homemade 9.10 box
- an IBM xSeries 346 running 10.04
- an Acer Veriton M460 running 10.04
- an Acer Travelmate 6293 running 10.04
None of them will work with it. The Travelmate and the IBM are dual-boot, both will work fine on the connection under Windows. The Veriton is Windows only (tested using a Live CD) and is much the same.The router is a Thompson TG782T (Telsta branded). I'm at a loss with this. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed.
I know this is probably an extremely easy question... but does anyone know how to browse the files of an mp3 player in ubuntu 10.04? when i insert it it shows up in rhythmbox, but i'm unable to browse the files manually... i also looked under media and it isn't showing up. any ideas?

I'm connecting to a network via a Belkin F7D1101. The adapter appears to be working fine, as I can see various wireless networks available and I am able to connect to my personal wireless network. The problem is that even though I am connected and have a valid IP, I am unable to browse the Internet. I can't even ping the router!
I initially thought it may be an issue with WPA, but I have installed wpa-supplicant and as a means of testing, I turned off WPA on the router, and the issue still stands.
I have a acer aspire. I recently dual booted with xp and fedora14. we have wifi in the campus and the problem is : I am able to connect to wifi & browse in xp but on the other hand with fedora I am able to connect and the signal is also pretty strong, but I am not able to browse.I am using a firefox mozilla, we also have a proxy for which I have configured all the setttings.The error being displayed is "connection time out".

I didn't have any problems when I was running FC13.I am able to get on the internet, and view the website I configured on this machine, but anything "network" related I cannot see.But now when I open Network, I am presented with MYGROUP, WORKGROUP, and my domain name (which is my actual "workgroup" as I don't have a domain). I cannot get to any of them - get the same timeout error as above.

I have a 64bit ASUS with a nVidia ethernet interface........I have just recently switched to cable broadband with a wired connection direct to the eth0 port. I have another computer running puppy linux in which the broadband works. hence this is how I am typing this now. I have connected my ubuntu machine to the cable and the network admin shows a wired connection but will not let me browse on the net with any browser. Not really sure how I got puppy to find it, but it did.
I have used the network manager on both machines with one connecting and the other not. I know there a newer ubuntu's out but I really do like Hardy and want to keep it, but without internet connection other than dialup it seems a bit lame. I am not above using command line options as I use wodim and wget all the time, so my question is.
