Sometimes Empathy is not sending my messages to my contacts on MSN. There are no warning messages of this, so it's really annoying. I have to disconnect and reconnect to MSN to resolve the issue. After the bug occurs no message is sent to that contact, but I can communicate with others.
In my case I see no correlation between the length of the message and the bug occurring, it seems to appear randomly.
I am using Empathy 2.30.0.1 on Ubunutu 10.04 RC
I don't like having to click twice to do what I had happen automatically in Pidgin - that is, open up my new messages in Empathy. It's just cumbersome - is there any hack or option for this, or should I merely go back to Pidgin for now? I really like Empathy, but this is just annoying.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I am having a conversation in empathy, I find that some messages people have sent me, don't arrive. Also the other way around: people don't receive messages I have sent them. I use ubuntu 10.04 now, but this also occurred to me in 9.10.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am building a live USB key using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. No upgrades have been applied. It is as it came in the ISO that was distributed.I would like to create a smooth start-up/logout process where no messages pop up (even briefly) that might confuse someone who is not very tech savvy. I'm referring to the messages that show up right before the login screen during start-up (between usplash and xsplash I think) that say:
"Starting early crypto disks ..."
and also the messages that show up on a black screen right after you initiate logout. It seems to sometimes show system messages including some error messages that can confuse users.Does anyone know of a way to hide, redirect, or disable these messages? I just don't want cryptic messages popping up even briefly that are going to confuse casual users. I'm stuck with version 9.10 since I've made some custom mods and would rather not redo them for a new release.
I have Lucid installed on two PCs. The PCs are identical except one uses the on-board Intel G33 video controller while the other has an nvidia 210 video card attached. The nvidia PC restarts/shuts down without showing any console text messages, however the Intel based PC has the following problem. The software on both machines is identical (except for the nvidia packages).
On restart or shutdown on the intel based PC plymouth gives way to a console for 2 or 3 seconds showing the following (none of which are errors as far as i know)...
Code:
Broadcast Message from root@xyz-desktop
(unknown) at 11:44 ...
The System is going down for restart NOW!
* Deactivating Swap ...
* Unmounting weak filesystems ...

Just another newbie question here, I've recently changed my main OS to ubuntu 9.10 and everything is going swimmingly.Except a small problem with empathy IM. I have seen posts where people complain about it not being able to set its status to hidden for MSN, this is not what my problem is.My problem is as follows: when friends of mine who's status is set to hidden on MSN (them using windows and default MSN app) message me, I receive no such messages. They have to set the status to visable to be able to message me at all.
On XP I used Digsby, it could recieve such messages normally. So I am not sure if it is due to empathy being a 3rd party app.
Howto hide boot text messages on the screen during Lenny startup? I've tried to change in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
Code:
## additional options to use with the default boot option, but not with the
## alternatives
## e.g. defoptions=vga=791 resume=/dev/hda5
# defoptions=quiet splash
Howto configure /boot/grub/menu.lst from Lenny to hide boot text messages during the startup?

I understand this kind of defeats the purpose of the NBR setup, but i have 4 workspaces and I want to have 3 different apps open in 3 of them, and the NBR startup in workspace 1.
so is there a way to disable this interface in specific workstations or no?
Running The GNOME Panel 2.30.0, and since I'm using Avant Window Navigator, I'd like to hide the last panel.
I want to keep the shortcuts (like alt+f1, f2, etc...) so killing it isn't what I need.
I've been looking around but I always end up getting a 1px panel on top. Anyone has any suggestions for this?

Do not confuse with hiding something from the menu - i want to hide a partition.
according to aplay -l my computer (a Dell Dimension 5000) should have an IEC958:

I've been facing this problem of locking up files, I've three users in my system, I can't lock a folder but just can hide it by appending . in front of file. Is there any tool/software in linux to lock a file, so other users cannot even open/see. I tried with chmod options but didn't work?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am using a Toshiba Satellite L355-s7915 notebook with a 17" screen. The maximum screen resolution is 1440x900, and I have to run at that resolution because lower settings just occupy less monitor space. What is means is that the image shown is still the same size, but in a smaller area. Of course print is not too big as a result. FireFox at least gives me a zoom-in and zoom-out capability when using Ctrl and either the + or - key, so that helps. But the mouse is rather small, maybe a 1/16" width. And sometimes it is hard to locate on the screen. Since the mouse pointer and the cursor positions can be in separate areas, seeing one does not help with finding the other.
Anyway, I have found that a search for a hard-to-see mouse can take a lot of mouse jiggling about, and it helps to have some place on the screen that behaves differently if the mouse passes over it. That pop up task bar that VirtualBox adds when the client is in full screen mode works pretty good for this, but if you don't know where the mouse is, then trying to move it over the pop up task bar locaton is a guessing game. I found a better way, and thought I might pass this along. You don't know where the mouse position is? Press the right mouse button. A choice of things to do pops up, and where it is, so is the mouse. In fact the mouse is in there to make a choice, and is easy to see now. Now you just take the mouse where you want to go, and you have survived another crisis.

Attached to it is an external hard drive (personal) that I would like to either encrypt or either make invisible tave ubuntu on my personal laptop.Could I make it ext4 and unviewable by Mac or PC or something along those lines so that nobody just goes through my (personal) stuff by just logging in and going on the desktop? I'm looking for something that will still allow me to access them fairly easily such as file permissions or something. I don't wanna put it into a zip file or a password protected rar file. I know nothing is 100% but I at least want a layer of security.

I understand that you must edit it in either 'menu.lst' or '30-os-prober' files.
The entry is a little like this... (?)

LONGNAME="${LABEL}"
