Jan 23, 2010In GRUB 1 there were commands to hide/unhide a partition (e.g. hide (hd0,1)). Is there an equivalent in GRUB 2?
Do not confuse with hiding something from the menu - i want to hide a partition.

Ubuntu :: Way To Hide Grub Entries In Grub2?
Jan 8, 2011I have been fooling around with some of the new kernels and have ended up with a lot of options in my grub at boot. I have been checking this page:[URL].. ... and it appears hiding the entries in grub2 is not as easy as hashing them out (#) which was the convention in grub.
My problem: I have installed kernel 2.6.36 and 2.6.37 just to fool around. Neither works in anything but low-graphics as it seems the ATI graphics driver is not working in either yet. They both also kill my wireless (don't recognise the card). BUT I don't want to completely uninstall them as I'd like to keep playing around as time goes on and they develop. I'd like to just hide them from the menu.
Is there some easy way of doing this? The link I provide only gives options to make the kernel non-executable (overly complicated process) or remove the kernel completely, neither of which I want to do. This used to be simple in grub, open a file and add or remove a #, and - although overall I prefer grub2 - IMHO this 'improvement' seems a little like a backward step. Nov 5, 2010According to what I have read to date, Linux should let me hide or unhide a partition by just using gparted or parted, or reverting to fdisk. Well, all three say you can do it, but none of them does. According to several sources, there is software available under DOS or Windows for the purpose, but I want to do it as a separate boot method or under Ubuntu when I boot up Live.

Is there any way I can prevent it mounting when linux launches, prevent it from being mounted in linux, and (ideally) prevent it from being displayed/opened/edited at all from linux?(In case it's relevant:

Sep 16, 2010Basically, I don't want to see my dual booted xp boot. At all. Yes, I want GRUB to see it, so I can chose, but I would love to have it completely ignored once I load Ubuntu even for intruders. I did not like being able to just click my Windows partition thinking of the brutal things that could be done to it since it's not even booted.I am aware I can make a second user who has admin privileges, but that is similar to my other question...

I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:
Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)
Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.

Jan 19, 2010I have installed UNR 9.10 Karmic on new Asus EEE pc 1008HA to dual boot with XP. Like many new pc's it has a hidden partition to recover the factory hard disk settings and Microsoft Windows XP. Unfortunately, GRUB2 has picked this up and is showing the recovery system in the boot menu. Clearly this is dangerous because the user could reset the pc. How do I remove or hide this boot start up option? Other thoughts: I do not believe Easybcd works with xp/linux. is there another easy bootloader?

May 18, 2010I want to set up my USB memory stick(s) (4gb) so that I have a partition (3gb?) for personal data storage and another hidden (1gb?) for booting/installing Ubuntu live from the 'stick' on friends' and colleagues' computers.I have a number of queries:
1) If I flag the boot partition 'hidden' in Gparted, it does what I want in Ubuntu but not in Windows; in Windows you can see the hidden partition, 'Wubi', and not the storage one. Does it simply depend on the physical position of the partitions on the memory stick?
2) I am using Unetbootin and Gparted (both GUIs). Should I prepare the live boot partition before or after partitioning the memory stick?
3) How much memory should I allow for the live boot partition?
4) Is there anyone who has asked similar questions or tried to achieve the same results before? Please let me know if I'm doing it all wrong.

Make Windows (ANY variant) the default Grub2 menu option.
Description: This sets Windows as the default boot option, and (with NO user action) the PC will auto-launch Windows on startup.
STEPS:
A. sudo update-grub #List your current menu items
B. Edit setup file
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=”Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1″ #Set the boot default to your Windows boot partition
[WARNING: Just setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=n', will NOT work after kernel updates, etc.
Save the file and close.]
sudo update-grub
Question: I must have done something wrong, for update-grub (as root) now gives this: "/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 6: /etc/default/grub: 2: not found"
What should I do now to make grub as it was in the beginning?

Nov 1, 2010I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Ubuntu :: Move Grub From One Partition To Another Partition?
May 8, 2010I don't know if this is possible however would like to know how to move grub from one partition to another.I may not have explainded that very well. I have a computer that i use to checkout different linux distros, however since the introduction of grub2 things have become difficult. I have a number of primary partitions on the one hdd If I install a o/s that uses grub on a partition and another partition has a o/s that uses grub2 then on startup the o/s with grub2 no longer appears on the grub start up screen so I cannot boot into the grub2 o/s. The reverse is ok i.e. if I install a grub2 o/s after a grub o/s all appear on the grub start up screen.
This leaves me in the situation where I have to always reinstall a grub2 o/s after i install a grub o/s. Hope that makes sense! This is why it would be easier (I hope) to be able to move grub from one o/s to another. I must admit I don't really understand it all that well and I know that mbr plays a role in it, however I think it's correct that the mbr can remain on an o/s yet grub is on another?

Mar 27, 2010I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

May 25, 2010Just installed 10.04, loving the new theme and default background. My problem is that Grub won't detect my Win 7 boot. I installed it the way i normally do, seemed to work for the last few times. I put in my Windows recovery disc to try and fix the MBR but that failed as the disc wont even see my Win 7 install. Apparently though, since I have Win7 on the other drive, Grub doesn't find it and won't generate a boot menu entry for it. I'm attempting to just add one to the menu by editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom, but those attempts aren't quite working. That adds an entry to the menu, but apparently I've got a parameter wrong somewhere.

Ubuntu :: No Such Partition Grub Rescue ?
Jul 28, 2011I own a Sony Vaio VPCEB3AFM. It came with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, no disks or anything. The product key is on the back of the laptop. I later installed Ubuntu, as I was beginning to take an interest in the potential of computers and began to explore with different Operating Systems. I installed it along side Windows 7. THEN, me being the dumbass I am, installed BackTrack 5 also. I then called Sony in attempt to restore my computer to factory defaults and just have Windows 7 as my only operating system. I shut my computer down and then hit F10 until the Vaio Rescue shows up. It was in the process of Restoring when it restarted and an error message came up. It reads, Error: No Such Partition Grub Rescue>. I have no idea what to do none of the OS boot up when I start it. I have no disks, I have only Ubuntu on a USB drive which I boot up by changing the BIOS blah blah. But when I do not have it in, the error message occurs.
